Estadio Opens Today in Logan Circle
Estadio, a new Spanish restaurant from the owners of Proof, opens today at 1520 14th Street NW. The restaurant will serve a range of Spanish tapas and "slushitos," which are essentially alcoholic slurpees. In preparation, check out Jane Black's mouth-watering article about Chef Haidar Karoum and owner Mark Kuller's journey through Spain to figure out what to bring to the table. Much like Proof, there will interesting bathroom decorations; Estadio will carry on the glory of the World Cup on their ladies' room wallpaper, featuring pictures of Spanish national team players.
Fun and Fare for a Cause at Capital Food Fight
D.C. restaurateurs and food fanatics alike turned out in droves for this year's sold out Capital Food Fight to benefit D.C. Central Kitchen–although it's unclear whether they were there for the food, the fierce competition or to see how long it would take José Andrés to lose his voice. (For the record: it started to give out sometime after Round 2.) Chef Michael Mina, creator of Bourbon Steak and the only out-of-town chef participating in the competition, took the crown from reigning champ Barton Seaver during a final round that featured coquitos (baby coconuts) as the secret ingredient.
The Weekly Feed: Pinchy Edition
It has been soft shell crab season for a few weeks now. Most of them are coming up from North Carolina at present, but the Maryland ones should be in season soon. One of the best versions around town is at Proof. Chef Haidar Karoum serves them fried with a cucumber slaw and a creamy chili garlic dressing. Karoum has a great ability to seamlessly adapt Asian flavors into more modern interpretations without making them seem kitschy or hackneyed. This dish is a perfect example. The cucumber slaw is a quick sweet pickle with jalapeno reminiscent of the pickled vegetables found on banh mi sandwiches. The dressing hints at sriracha. With a nice French baguette, this dish would make a superlative banh mi.
