141: The Little Precinct That Could

141: The Little Precinct That Could

At 5:30 this morning, Jethro Smith arrived at the Reeves Center, ready to work. Smith, a Board of Elections and Ethics technical clerk, was fully prepared to meet the crowds ready to vote in this year's general election at Precinct 141, which is tucked away inside ground floor of the Center. Smith had put in a six-hour shift at the precinct yesterday, preparing equipment and setting up for registration, and he was ready to put in at least fifteen hours of today. Such long hours are necessary -- the Board has repeatedly promised that the general election would be a better voting experience for citizens than September's Democratic primary, and such promises take a lot of elbow grease to fulfill. more ›

Morning Roundup: Sweating it Out Edition

Welcome back to work, Washington. This week promises not only to feel longer than normal thanks to its coming on the heels of a holiday, but also hot enough that you might want to consider setting up an ad-hoc shower in your office, as there's little chance you'll get there without breaking into a sweat first. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has issued a Code Orange alert because of the heat wave, and... more ›

Go Home Already: More Lights on in Our Neighborhood

>> Well, we know who Diane Rehm won't be supporting for President in 2008: Newt Gingrich. The former Speaker of the House was on her WAMU-produced NPR show this morning, but ducked out 20 minutes short of his hour-long segment; Ms. Rehm was not pleased. "I think he just came on the show to sell his book," a caller said, to which Diane replied, "I think so too, and I'm FURIOUS about it." Another... more ›

A Tale of Two Tunnels

A Tale of Two Tunnels

As of yesterday, Metro was placed among the many city agencies with pricey downtown digs currently being considered for more a affordable address. Mayor Fenty approached Metro yesterday with the idea of selling its eight-story headquarters at 600 5th St. in Northwest and relocating to a new, state-of-the-art facility at the Anacostia Metro station. Fenty and city officials say that such a move would provide an economic boon to both the downtown and Southeast areas,... more ›

"We are now the intellectual capital of the world,'' says Stephanie Landrum, acting executive director of Alexandria's economic development office, according to the Washington Post. Presidents Day Weekend Update

Presidents Day Weekend Update

We hope you're enjoying your Presidents Day weekend, especially if you have Monday off from work. Although this photo taken outside the Adams Morgan McDonalds was posted on photogene's photoblog on Valentine's Day, we thought it works for this weekend as well since we witnessed a fight spill from the sidewalk to inside the McDonald's at 18th Street and Columbia Road and then back outside again. The Metropolitan Police officers breaking up the scuffle sure seemed pissed off. "Those were the same guys as before!" more ›
