One of two suspects sought in the Nov. 7 killing of shopkeeper Rufina Hernandez has been arrested, D.C. police announced last night. Andres Lopez, 45, of no fixed address was taken into custody without incident on Thursday afternoon near 4th and Kennedy Streets NW, only about five blocks from La Casa de Morata liquor store. Hernandez was shot and killed that Saturday night during the course of a robbery. Two suspects are believed to have entered the store and demanded money, a request with which Hernandez complied, but one of the suspects shot her anyway. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier declined to indicate whether Lopez is believed to be the shooter, but reiterated that the search for the second suspect continues. "We look forward to getting help from the community," Lanier said. "There is still work to do."

The Post's Matt Zapotosky is reporting that a woman was held at gunpoint in her home in Oxon Hill this morning during a home-invasion robbery perpetrated by three men. The men, at least one wearing a mask and two said to be armed with guns, broke into the woman's apartment in the 1400 block of Southern Ave., just across the street from the District border, at about 8 a.m. this morning. The report notes that the suspects are believed to have fled in a gray or blue Dodge Magnum.

D.C. police today released a pair of photos and a composite sketch of a man they believe to be responsible for a bevy of crimes across the city in the last month. Among the crimes police are attributing to this one guy are the robberies and/or car jackings of six different taxi cab drivers in the month of September alone, plus the Sept. 22 armed robbery of the Lowest Price Gas Station in the 2800 block of 12th Street NE.

Arlington County Police released this YouTube video over the weekend showing the suspect responsible for Friday's armed robbery and shooting at the Clarendon Apple Store. The video doesn't show a particularly clear shot of the suspect's face, but does offer at least a basic description to work with (and it doesn't show the actual shooting, in case you were worried about watching it -- the suspect can merely be seen entering the store, holding a gun to the victim, and then they walk out of view of the camera). Below is the info included with the video.

At approximately 10:15 a.m. on July 3, 2009, an unknown man rang the doorbell at the service entrance to the Apple Store in the 2700 block of Clarendon Boulevard. An employee walked to the back of the store to answer the door. A short time later, another employee heard a gunshot. The victim, a 26 year old female, was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the right shoulder. The suspect had already fled the area on foot. The victim was transported to an area hospital where she remains in serious but stable condition.

Planning on using your day off to make a stop at the Genius Bar or finally pick up that new iPhone? Might want to head to Pentagon City, instead. NBC4 is reporting some kind of armed robbery occurred at the Apple Store in Clarendon, located in the 2700 block of Clarendon Boulevard, this morning, though details are still scant. At least one person is reported to have been injured. We'll update when we hear more.

Logan Circle men's clothing and athletic store Universal Gear posted a surveillance video of a recent robbery in their store to YouTube, and they're offering a $500 reward to anyone who shares information leading to the arrest of one or more of the individuals involved.

WJLA covers an assault and robbery committed by a group of teenage girls at the Rue 14 Boutique (1803 14th Street NW) a few weeks ago, noting that a similar crime happened at another business nearby earlier this week. They've got surveillance video of five young suspects who participated in a grab and run at Rue 14, with one of them staying behind to rough up the store owner while the others got away. Upsetting stuff.

D.C.'s retail employees breathed a sigh of relief over the weekend after a suspect was arrested in a string of robberies that targeted lone cashiers, often women, over the last several weeks. But now police say that another, similar robbery occurred today at the CVS on 14th Street NW at W Street.

D.C. Wire brings word that the suspect who has been arrested in a string of robberies at local businesses that includes Bandolino shoe store at 1329 Wisconsin Ave NW in Georgetown, Junction vintage clothing store at 1510 U Street NW, and City Sports sporting goods store on 7th Street NW in Chinatown, had previously been employed by the campaigns of D.C. Council candidates Adam Clampitt and Council member Michael A. Brown (I-At Large) (see City Desk for more on the politics angle). Ezra Mathis (no relation) was arrested Friday night near Potomac and M streets after police recognized him from a surveillance photo. In a recent email to other stores on U Street, Junction employee Megan J. Gay noted that she felt the robbery suspect had been preying on women who were alone working in stores and boutiques. The Metropolitan Police Department released the security camera image at right in the hopes the public can help them identify an armed robbery suspect. The robbery took place on January 11 at around 9:30 p.m. in the Dupont neighborhood. The suspect is described as an Hispanic male in his mid-20s, 6’0” - 6’5” in height, and weighing 200-300 lbs. He had short, black hair and a very thin beard that outlines only his jawline. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

Prince George's County police are warning residents after a woman was robbed and sexually assaulted in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon.

UPDATE: The Post has identified the hotel as the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown.

Since the other strange crime story from today was so upsetting, it's worth it to point out this rather more lighthearted report from Anne Arundel County of an elderly woman who defended herself against a robber with a reacher.

Metro Weekly reports that two Maryland men were attacked and robbed on their way to Be Bar in Shaw on Sunday night. According to the police report, a group of four men beat the victims and made off with $15 and a set of car keys. One of the victims, a 37-year-old from Clinton, is on life support; the other, a 23-year-old from Fort Washington, was treated at a hospital for a bruised jaw and then released. The victims' names have not been released and this incident may be considered a hate crime.

The Post is reporting that an off-duty Metropolitan Police officer shot a man who was attempting to rob him at a gas station in Northeast early this morning.

Two men robbed the Maggie Moo's ice cream parlor on U Street at gunpoint yesterday -- and they did it at 12:15 p.m., right in the middle of the day. DCist's Lynne Venart snapped the photo above of some of the aftermath of the crime scene.

The Associated Press is reporting that a dark cherry red Peterbilt tanker truck hauling gasoline was stolen at gunpoint this morning in Baltimore.
