Robert Novak Dies at 78

Robert Novak, the conservative commentator often referred to as The Prince of Darkness, has succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 78. Kenneth Tomlinson at HumanEvents.com, which published the Evans-Novak Report up until it was canceled last year, confirmed the news this morning. Novak, perhaps now best known for his role in outing CIA agent Valerie Plame, first announced he had been diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor almost exactly a year ago, and promptly decided to retire. The diagnosis came just a short time after Novak struck a homeless man with his car in downtown Washington.

They've already fixed it, but the error above in the Associated Press story about Robert Novak's immediate retirement was live on The New York Times web site for a short time earlier this afternoon. Yikes! The conservative columnist may be widely known as the "Prince of Darkness," but brain tumors are certainly no laughing matter. Except, it turns out, when they lead to mistakes like this. Too soon?

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that conservative columnist Robert Novak has announced his immediate retirement. He told the paper that his recent diagnosis of a brain tumor was "dire." Novak was involved in an accident on July 23 when he hit a pedestrian with his car and drove away. He was stopped a short distance later by a bicyclist who witnessed the incident. Novak claimed he didn't realize he had hit someone. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor the following Sunday, July 27.

Just days after he hit a pedestrian with his car here in D.C., conservative columnist Robert Novak has announced that he has a brain tumor. Novak's paper, the Chicago Sun-Times, reported the news earlier today.

Novak said he was diagnosed on Sunday with a brain tumor and will soon begin treatment at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He issued the following statement:

Robert Novak's recent run-in with an 86-year-old homeless man is the story that just keeps on giving.

Just to add some fuel to Martin's argument that yesterday's Robert Novak traffic incident is no laughing matter, the Post has some much better reporting up than WJLA's early word. Turns out the victim is actually 86 years old, not 66, and he is currently homeless and has been living in a shelter. Clifford Liljenquist's injuries are apparently not severe, but were complicated by his age and history of homelessness.

There was plenty of snickering in the media yesterday about Robert Novak's very literal run-in with a pedestrian. Heck, we snickered ourselves silly, and even Jon Stewart couldn't resist making jokes — "You know what Washington needs? More vigilante bicyclists!" (see video above).

The Politico is reporting that conservative commentator Robert Novak -- known variably as the "Prince of Darkness" or the "Douchebag of Liberty" -- was cited for hitting a pedestrian with his Corvette in downtown Washington today:

A Politico reporter saw Novak in the front of a police car with a citation in his hand; a WJLA-TV crew and reporter saw Novak as well. The pedestrian was hospitalized but there were no details about the person’s condition. Novak was later released and left the scene.

IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE REGAL CINEMA IN BETHESDA.
