Good morning, Washington. Yesterday afternoon Roll Call had the story of a potential suspect finally being identified in all those strange Senate bathroom fires from the last few months. Capitol Police Officer Karen Emory recently has been suspended in connection with the fires, although it still hasn't been confirmed whether she is definitely a suspect in the case. No charges have been filed, but color us a little disappointed if it turns out a...

Good morning, Washington, and welcome to September. After what was quite possibly the most beautiful weekend in the history of late summer weather in this city, we've finally arrived at the date many of us still associate with "back-to-school" -- the Tuesday after Labor Day. So sharpen your pencils, polish your lunchbox and make sure you have the right Trapper Keeper as we check out today's headlines. At Least Four Weekend Killings: The Examiner...
It seems that with the coming of the holidays, folks in D.C. are a bit too busy to head out with their cameras and submit tons of great shots to the DCist photos pool. Which is all well and good; I'll take this opportunity to head back in the archives and pick a photo of something I'd love to see right now: ambib's lovely shot of Rock Creek Parkway blanketed in snow. Maybe January will be different, but I don't think we'll be seeing a white Christmas this year, sadly. Exif data.
UPDATE: WTOP is reporting that part of a building under construction in Rosslyn has collapsed, and that there are reported injuries, but at this point they don't know how severe. The building is at the corner of North Lynn Street and 19th Street. We'll update again when we learn more. MORE: "Arlington Police spokesman John Lisle says a slab of wet concrete partially collapsed on the 24th floor of the building on North Lynn Street." There are 2 or 3 workers believed to be trapped in the building, the extent of their injuries still unknown. WTOP Traffic reports access to the Key Bridge from Rosslyn is closed, along with Fort Myer Drive. MORE: Looks like a total of 16 workers were injured in the collapse, with three now in critical condition. Full story here.
I'm not entirely convinced this is a photograph, rather than a CGI screencap from the next Chronicles of Narnia film. Flickr user andertho went down to the Arlington Memorial Bridge near Rock Creek Parkway to capture this statue by Leo Friedlander with some incredible lighting. It was taken with a NikonD50 and you can find the EXIF data here.
Last month we reported that the District's first official triathlon, the Nation's Triathlon, was a go. After months of haggling with competing jurisdictions for permit, race organizers got the final go-ahead for the event, which would include a swim in the Potomac River, a bike ride up Rock Creek Park, and a run to the U.S. Capitol and back. Plenty of readers made jokes about swimming in the Potomac. Hell, so did I --...
Over the weekend the British tabloid The Sun listed the world's top 10 iconic car journeys, with U.S. roads taking five of the slots: 1. Boston to New York 2. Las Vegas to Grand Canyon; 3. Great Ocean Road, Australia; 4. Miami to Key West, Florida; 5. Amalfi Coast, Italy; 6. Pacific Coast Highway; 7. Monaco to Nice; 8. Route 66; 9. London Embankment; 10. The Rockies, Canada. And while we're somewhat miffed at how the...
Part of DCist's very nearly award-winning Deluge '06 coverage If you get on Rock Creek Parkway at Calvert and Connecticut in Northwest to drive through gorgeous Rock Creek Park on your daily commute, then you, too, have been experiencing a series of headaches and u-turns the past few days. Though local radio has been reporting that parts of the RCP have been reopened, a significant portion of it is still closed. We found a press...
Once mainly a dumping ground for hotels in easy striking distance of both Georgetown and downtown, the District's West End neighborhood has lately experienced a building boom that may bring more residents than ever into the quiet area east of Rock Creek Parkway, north of Foggy Bottom, and west of Dupont Circle.
I’ve never liked snow; that’s what growing up in a tropical climate like Florida with a parent from the Caribbean will do to you. I’ve always seen it as a nuisance, something that slows you down and results in the hem of your pants constantly being soaked. And my mom raised me to desperately avoid it. But I’ve always known that most of the action for the US was up in the Northeast, particularly the...
One of our more favorite nicknames for D.C. that we've heard over the years is Capital of Potholes. In the normal course of the freeze and thaw cycle, roads can take a beating. And the District wants you to tell them where they are. (And they say they'll fill them within three days.) Indicate the pothole location (i.e. address, intersection) and describe the severity of the pothole problem (i.e. depth, width, number of potholes in...
The Columbus Day pseudo holiday has caused a few random problems in a municipal-sense. If you are a District resident, be advised that garbage pickup will be off schedule. According to the District: "Once-weekly Supercan trash collection and citywide recycling will 'slide' one day for the remainder of the week, beginning Tuesday. Households that receive twice-weekly city trash service will have Monday’s trash collected on Tuesday, and Tuesday’s trash collected on Wednesday, with normal collections on Thursday and Friday."
-- Police think an attempted bank heist at the Riggs bank at Wisconsin and M Street in Georgetown is connected with a sucessful one on 12th Street NE. After the Saturday robbery D.C. government officials sent a text alert to people in the Georgetown, Burleith and Hillandale neighborhoods alerting them to the 9 a.m. crime noting "NO ONE WAS INJURED" and offering a vague physical description of the suspect. The alert was sent at 2 p.m., nearly 5 hours after the robbery occurred. It's not the first time the alert system was a bit slow.
Last night's heavy rains are still causing major problems today as the control room of the Silver Spring metrorail station was flooded, making it inoperable. Trains on the Red Line are running on 30 minute delays between Glenmont and Takoma. WMATA is running limited shuttle bus service service to compensate. Trains are operating manually through the section of track where the control room is inoperable.
