D.C. police are seeking a man who posed as a cab driver and sexually assaulted two women in nighttime incidents earlier this month. According to the Washington Post, one woman was attacked on the 300 block of 18th Street, NE after being picked up in Dupont, the second occurred on 3700 block of Quebec Street, NW after a pickup in Georgetown. The suspect is described as olive skinned and thinly built with thick or curly hair. Furthermore, he could be of Middle Eastern decent and between 30 and 40 years old. The Georgetown University Department of Public Safety received a report from the Metropolitan Police Department on Sunday about a woman who was sexually assaulted in her home on the 3800 block of S Street NW. Though the victim is not a Georgetown student, the crime has the same M.O. as a series of similar crimes which have taken place on the campus and around the university -- a man breaking into a residence, assaulting a woman, then fleeing the scene. more ›

The L.A. Times reports on the arrest here in D.C. of Mark Hardy, an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings. Hardy was taken into custody at about 2 a.m. on Friday at the Mayflower Hotel (quickly becoming the go-to local spot for sex scandals), after a woman accused him of fondling her when she was passed out drunk in a hotel room. The Associated Press account of the arrest merely mentions that the complainant was a woman who knows Hardy, but the Times provides the extra ick factor -- she is reportedly a relative of the former hockey defenseman. No word on exactly how they are related, but Hardy has since been ordered not to have any physical, verbal or electronic contact with this particular family member. more ›

An 11-year-old girl was raped Tuesday night by two men who approached her at a park in Silver Spring and then brought her to a nearby apartment, Montgomery County Police said today. The girl reported the assault to her mother immediately after it took place, and two suspects were arrested shortly thereafter, police said. Officers found the men, Melquicide Sorto, 31, and Marcos Torres-Enriquez, 20, both of the 8700 block of Carroll Avenue in Silver Spring, inside the apartment where the girl said the rape had occurred. The suspects have been charged with one count of second-degree rape each. The girl was examined at a local hospital and released. more ›

Via the Washington Post's Crime Scene blog, word that Prince William and Fairfax police say they have DNA evidence that connects the Halloween rapes of two teenage girls in Dale City to an alleged serial rapist who is suspected in at least a dozen other sexual assaults up and down the East Coast. The rapes span from 1997 to this year, with "at least four rapes in Fairfax County between 1999 and 2001, several in Prince George's County, one in Leesburg and several in Rhode Island and Connecticut." D.C. Police announced Thursday that they have made an arrest in the April 6 sexual assault of a female victim inside her home in the 1500 block of Marion Street NW. Police say physical evidence linked a suspect to the attack, and 25-year-old George Leroy Clowers of no fixed address has since been arrested and charged with first degree sexual abuse and burglary one. The crime was the sort that gives city-dwelling women everywhere nightmares: at around 3 a.m., the suspect broke into the victim's house in the Shaw neighborhood, sexually assaulted her and then stole some of her stuff before fleeing. more ›

Via WJLA, Georgetown University's Department of Public Safety says a student has reported an intruder and attempted sexual assault in her off-campus residence in the 1300 Block of 36th St. NW.

On Thursday, December 11, 2008 at approximately 6:43 a.m., a student reported to DPS that an unidentified male entered her residence by an unknown means, went into her bedroom and into her bed, then placed his hands on her. The victim challenged the suspect, he got out of the bed and exited the bedroom, closing the door behind him.

On the list of nightmarish experiences city-dwelling women dread, this one is right near the top. WJLA reported last night that a Capitol Hill woman says she was sexually assaulted by a cab driver who was taking her home. Dawn Young said she hailed a normal looking cab at 8th and G SE on Saturday night, because she thought it would be safer than making the short walk home alone. The cab driver asked her to sit in the front seat, and then proceeded to pull into an alley and park next to a wall to prevent her from escaping. He locked the doors and then proceeded to sexually assault her. Thankfully, Young got away. The WJLA report doesn't say anything about whether she was able to provide a description of her attacker. Here's hoping this cab driver is caught without delay.

Police are searching for a suspect in the rape of a woman Tuesday night near the Upper County Pool and Recreation Center in Gaithersburg. The Examiner says the victim had been taking a walk when a black male described as in his 40s, approximately 6'3", wearing a black shirt and black shorts pulled her into a wooded area and raped her. Montgomery County police did not find the suspect after a subsequent search. Anyone with information is asked to call 240-773-5070. more ›

Criminy, this news from the Examiner is unsettling. On Monday, D.C. police arrested Edwin K. Wright, 23, on charges of sexually assaulting three women in a single hour in downtown Washington. Yesterday WJLA reported on a series of sexual assaults around the American University campus that has police warning students and residents to be extra cautious. There have been four sexual assaults in the last two weeks that police believe were committed by the same man -- and the last two actually targeted the same woman twice.
