At least two more suspects have now been arrested in the Aug. 18 slaying of a pizza restaurant owner in the Edgewood neighborhood, WTOP's Mark Segraves reports. One suspect, Shanika Robinson, had already been arrested in the killing of Pizza Mart co-owner Shahabuddin Rana a few weeks ago, but now her brother, Leon Robinson, has also been taken into custody and charged with first degree murder. Segraves also tells DCist that a third suspect, whose name we still don't know, has been arrested in the time since this initial report. Police allege that Rana was killed after a false marriage arrangement between Shanika Robinson and Rana's brother fell apart. Rana had been paying Robinson $500 a week to be married to his brother so that he could get a green card, according to police, but at some point Rana stopped the payments. Further complicating the sordid case is the death of Terrance Green, a D.C. police officer who committed suicide earlier this month after he was subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury in the case.
Two More Arrests Made in Pizza Mart Murder
Cause of Death Determined in Pizza Mart Killing
The Metropolitan Police Department finally put out a formal press release yesterday on the Monday night killing of 44-year-old Shahabuddin Rana, the co-owner of the Edgewood Pizza Mart. But the release contained zero new information, and declined to offer a cause of death, pending an autopsy. Well now City Desk has the cause of death, courtesy the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner: 'Rana died from "blunt head trauma" as well as "stab and incised wounds," according to the office’s spokesperson Beverly Fields.' D.C. Police have been passing out fliers all over the neighborhood around the Pizza Mart, located at 2300 4th Street NE, in the hopes of prompting someone with information about what happened to Rana to come forward.
ID on Pizza Mart Body
WJLA has the ID of the man who was found dead inside a Pizza Mart in Edgewood on Tuesday: 44-year-old Shahabuddin Rana, of Silver Spring, Md., was a co-owner of the pizza shop with his brother. Police are still holding back on a specific cause of death, but they are treating it as a homicide and have alluded to some kind of trauma to the body. That Pizza Mart is a 24-7 carryout operation, and it appears the killer must have entered the store at some point overnight on Monday night and attacked Rana.
