More disturbing information is rising to the surface in the wake of last night's awful murder of a child on Columbia Road NW. The Washington Post is now reporting that the victim was indeed a nine-year-old boy, killed while trying to flee from an attempted robbery. An uptick in crime during a holiday weekend is hardly shocking, but an unsolved violent crime so close to a center of activity on a busy Friday night is still slightly unnerving. We first got word of a shooting near the intersection of 13th Street and W Street NW from Mike DeBonis' twitter feed; Loose Lips reported that two Hispanic males had been shot, and that three suspects were on the run, heading west on W Street.
Arlington County Police released this YouTube video over the weekend showing the suspect responsible for Friday's armed robbery and shooting at the Clarendon Apple Store. The video doesn't show a particularly clear shot of the suspect's face, but does offer at least a basic description to work with (and it doesn't show the actual shooting, in case you were worried about watching it -- the suspect can merely be seen entering the store, holding a gun to the victim, and then they walk out of view of the camera). Below is the info included with the video.
At approximately 10:15 a.m. on July 3, 2009, an unknown man rang the doorbell at the service entrance to the Apple Store in the 2700 block of Clarendon Boulevard. An employee walked to the back of the store to answer the door. A short time later, another employee heard a gunshot. The victim, a 26 year old female, was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the right shoulder. The suspect had already fled the area on foot. The victim was transported to an area hospital where she remains in serious but stable condition.Continue reading "Arlington County Police Release Apple Store Gunman Video"
Well, this situation just keeps getting worse and worse, now doesn't it? It was awful enough that Thursday's shooting at the Columbia Heights Metro station stemmed from an orientation for the District's Summer Jobs Program, but news broke earlier this evening that the main suspect in the crime is a nineteen-year-old who had been interning in, of all people, Councilman Jim Graham's office.
Mayor Fenty, Chief Lanier and Ward 1 Council member Jim Graham today showed off the new Closed Circuit Television camera that's been installed at Kalorama Road and Champlain Street NW. The intersection has been the site of several recent violent crimes, including an officer involved shooting in which a suspect was fatally shot and two police officers were injured. "This technology is instrumental to our work as we continue to fight crime, and make our neighborhoods safe," Mayor Fenty said in a statement. Does the camera make you feel safer at that corner/in that tunnel, Adams Morgan residents?
Via Prince of Petworth, there's word of yet another shooting inside the District, adding to the already lengthy tally of gun violence this weekend. In this instance, a PoP reader reported that a up to five shots were fired on the 1800 block of Monroe Street NW in Mount Pleasant last night. One youth -- only 15 years old -- was reportedly hit in the leg and transported to a hospital in an ambulance. Police are still investigating.

Sadly, last night was yet another violent one in Columbia Heights, as multiple listserv reports -- including one from Councilman Jim Graham -- describe more gunshots on the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW. First, Graham reports that shortly after 7:30 yesterday evening, a 51-year old man was struck by bullets in the wrist, hand, and thigh. No one is sure of his connection, if any, to the mostly gang-related violence that has plagued the block for the last few months. The man is expected to recover.
The Metropolitan Police Department sent out an update early this morning on Tuesday's officer-involved shooting at 16th and Kalorama Road NW. The officer in question was an off-duty detective. Police say he was attacked randomly by an apparently mentally disturbed man. The suspect, who was shot once in the abdomen and is in stable condition in a local hospital, has still not been identified. Police are also withholding the name of the detective, but say he is a 20-year veteran assigned to the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital and released, and has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation. The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault. The shooting is being investigated by the department’s Force Investigations Team.

The Washington Blade is reporting that the victim in the fatal overnight shooting at 11th and Q Streets NW has been identified as Durval Martins of the 200 block of Bates Street NW. Martins, a 35-year-old gay man, was shot in the head and killed shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday while walking home from Fox & Hounds, according to D.C. police. A police statement said Martins also suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Acting Lt. Brett Parson of the Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit said officers found the victim's wallet in his hand and that his cash, cell phone, and jewelry were not taken. Martins had reportedly been out in the Dupont area last night, having visited gay bar Omega and the 17th Street restaurant Jack’s before going to Fox & Hounds. Police have not pinpointed a motive in the killing, but said it could have been robbery given that the victim’s wallet was in his hand.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced this afternoon that five men have been arrested for the killing of 13-year-old Alonzo Robinson and shooting of four other people in Trinidad last July. The shooting spree was one of the worst incidents in a wave of increased violence in Trinidad that lead police to establish controversial checkpoints in the area. Police say the five men, all from the Kenilworth-Parkside area, sprayed gunfire in the neighborhood in an attempt to settle a cross-neighborhood dispute with members of the Trinidad neighborhood. One of the suspects was arrested in early July and has been cooperating with the police.

More details on last night's fatal shootings came out this afternoon. The first, which happened at about 10:30 p.m. at 9th Street and Barry Place NW, right next to the Howard University campus, appears to have been an attempted carjacking gone wrong. The victim was 47-year-old Barbara Carl, who was riding in the passenger seat of her fiance's BMW when a group of six men approached the car. When Carl's fiance tried to drive away, one of the men opened fire on the car, and Carl was fatally wounded.
We mentioned it briefly at the end of the day yesterday and it's been reported several other places since then, but we wanted to share some more details on how our good friend Brian Beutler was shot early Wednesday morning in Adams Morgan. Brian, 25, is the Washington Correspondent for the Media Consortium, a network of progressive news organizations like Mother Jones and the American Prospect. He's being described as a "well known liberal blogger" and while that's not incorrect, Brian is a hardnosed reporter. You can read some of his work here.
