Arrest Made in Brightwood Liquor Store Slaying

One of two suspects sought in the Nov. 7 killing of shopkeeper Rufina Hernandez has been arrested, D.C. police announced last night. Andres Lopez, 45, of no fixed address was taken into custody without incident on Thursday afternoon near 4th and Kennedy Streets NW, only about five blocks from La Casa de Morata liquor store. Hernandez was shot and killed that Saturday night during the course of a robbery. Two suspects are believed to have entered the store and demanded money, a request with which Hernandez complied, but one of the suspects shot her anyway. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier declined to indicate whether Lopez is believed to be the shooter, but reiterated that the search for the second suspect continues. "We look forward to getting help from the community," Lanier said. "There is still work to do."

Lanier: Fuentes Killing Not Gang Related

The fatal shooting of 9-year-old Oscar Fuentes inside his Columbia Heights apartment on Saturday night was not gang-related, according to D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. Lanier, along with D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Ward 1 D.C. Council member Jim Graham, this morning announced the arrest of Josue Pena, 26, in the killing. Pena has been charged with first degree murder.

As we noted in the Morning Roundup, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Police Chief Cathy Lanier are making their way to the 1400 block of Columbia Rd. NW right now in order to announce that an arrest has been made in the killing of 9-year-old Oscar Fuentes. The Post says the man who was arrested is Josue Pena, 26, who was taken into custody in Hyattsville just before 6 a.m. this morning. No more details on the arrest are available just yet, but check back in after the 10 a.m. press conference.

D.C. Police say they are investigating two fatal shootings that happened overnight in Northeast.

D.C. Police Double Reward for Edgewood Terrace Shooting

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Mayor Adrian Fenty announced Wednesday that they have doubled the reward money, to $50,000, for anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the two gunmen who shot and killed 17-year-old Kenyetta Nicholson-Stanley on Oct. 8. Nicholson-Stanley was shot while standing in a playground in the 500 block of Edgewood Street NE, and was merely a bystander. The suspects are believed to have been targeting a security guard who worked in the Edgewood Terrace apartments.

WTTG/FOX 5's got some video of an argument that broke out about 10 a.m. on Monday morning at the McDonald's on Good Hope Road in Southeast. The surveillance video shows two men getting into a disagreement while waiting in line to pay, then later they can be seen fighting over the tops of tables and on the floor of the fast food restaurant. Eventually, the suspect wearing the black hat pulled out a gun and actually fired it, though thankfully he didn't hit anyone.

D.C. police say that two of their officers fatally shot a 19-year-old man at about 5 a.m. this morning in the 900 block of 21st Street NE. The Post first reported word of the shooting earlier today, but the AP has more details now: Police say the two officers, who still have not been named, responded to a call for an unwanted guest at a home in that block early this morning, and subsequently shot and killed James Broadus Miller, 19. According to police, Miller confronted the officers with a gun before he was shot. No other injuries were reported.

Georgetown Toilet Shooter Appears in Court

If you haven't been reading the Georgetown Voice's coverage of the bizarre events that led to the destruction of a Georgetown University toilet on Friday night, head over there and take a good look. The Post picked up the story today, while the Voice continues to toil away at every last detail.

As if the drive-by shooting Tuesday at the Clay Terrace housing projects, which left two teens dead and three others wounded, wasn't tragic enough, the Washington Post is citing police sources today who indicate that one of the slain victims, 15-year-old Davonta Artis, was an innocent bystander. Preliminary word from D.C. police is that the drive-by resulted from a dispute between two rival crews, from 37th Place SE and Clay Terrace, over a set of stolen handguns. Artis, according to the Post, appears to have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

UPDATE 9:20 p.m. We can now confirm that the second victim has in fact died. The Post has also updated its story.

For those of you following yesterday's broad daylight double shooting in Southwest, one of the victims is now reported to have died. From the Post's Paul Duggan: "The slaying victim was identified as Chicquelo Abeny of Southwest Washington. Police did not identify the second victim because he survived the shooting and is considered a witness." Police are still not offering any ideas as to a motive in the shootings, but Ward 6's Tommy Wells is already tweeting up a storm about setting up a community meeting "to determine if they are retalitory [sic] shootings or unrelated incidences."

Two people were shot earlier this afternoon in the 1300 block of First Street SW. The shooting occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m., D.C. Police said. D.C. Fire/EMS said emergency responders transported one man found shot on First Street SW and a second man who was found shot in the alley off N Street SW, near Howison Place SW. Both men are said to have been in critical condition when they were taken to local hospitals.

A 30-year-old Maryland man was found shot Thursday evening in the 1600 block of K Street NE, on the edge of the Trinidad neighborhood. He was discovered at about 5:45 p.m. after police officers responded to a Shotspotter alert, the Post reports. The victim, Andre Pate, later died from his injuries at a local hospital. D.C. police had no more information available today on the shooting.

D.C. Police officers shot and killed a man in Southeast D.C. at about 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. Police were responding to what appears to be a strange 911 call to 1767 Trenton Place SE, not far from the Southern Ave. Metro station, when the shooting occurred.

D.C. police say they are investigating a daytime shooting in the 1200 block of H Street NE. An adult female was shot at about 12:54 p.m. at 1275 H Street NE.

Murder Suspect Walks Out of Washington Hospital Center

Montgomery County police say that one of two men currently wanted for murder in an Aug. 30 killing managed to walk out of Washington Hospital Center and is currently at-large.

James von Brunn Held Without Bail

Given the crime he stands accused of, this doesn't come as a big surprise: the AP is reporting that accused U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum shooter James von Brunn has been ordered held without bail today in federal court. This is the first time von Brunn has been able to appear in court in person, as he was still recovering from the gunshot wounds he received from one of the museum guards on June 10. The alleged gunman reportedly decided to say a few words at the short arraignment hearing. Among them: "I'm a United States citizen, and as a U.S. naval officer I swore to protect my country. I take my vows very seriously." James von Brunn has been charged with first-degree murder and related hate crime and gun violations in the death of security guard Stephen T. Johns.

A Prince George's County police officer shot and seriously wounded a man in Southeast D.C. today after following the man into the District, the Post is reporting. The victim, who has not been identified, was a suspect in the killing of two people in Anne Arundel County earlier this morning, according to police. The police-involved shooting took place at Minnesota Avenue and Ridge Road SE.

Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting of Deborah Ann Brown

D.C. police made an arrest today in the fatal shooting of 48-year-old Deborah Ann Brown. Brown died Saturday evening in the 2900 block of 14th Street NW, after being struck in what appears to have been gunfire aimed at someone else.

A quick update on last night's quadruple shooting in the Brightwood Park area. Four people were shot, one fatally, in the 900 block of Hamilton Street NW, and now police have released the identity of the deceased: Michael Harris, 24, of the 4000 block of 4th Street NW, was shot and killed at around 6:30 p.m. last night, WJLA reports. At least one of the other three victims is reported to have sustained serious injuries as well. The shooting appears to have erupted due to some kind of argument. "A relative of Harris told ABC 7 News the victims were all friends and were just hanging out when the violence erupted." Police were searching for an older model blue station wagon in the area last night in relation to the shooting.

A man was shot at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night in the 1300 block of 5th Street NW, and police now say the victim has died from his injuries. The man's identity has not yet been released, but according to D.C. police, he was a Maryland resident. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099.

Daytime Shooting at 16th St. and Spring Rd. NW

An adult male was shot this afternoon near the intersection of 16th Street and Spring Road NW.

At least six people were shot in four separate shooting incidents overnight, WJLA is reporting. One of the victims, who was shot in the head near the intersection of Irving and 24th Streets SE, died of his injuries, while another is said to be in critical condition after a shooting in the 1800 block of Birney Place SE. Four other people suffered non life-threatening injures. The other two shooting incidents took place in the 2600 block of Stanton Road SE and the 200 block of W Street NW.

Accused Holocaust Museum shooter James von Brunn was indicted by a federal grand jury today on charges of first-degree murder and related hate crime and gun violations, the Post is reporting. A series of arraignment hearings for von Brunn have been repeatedly postponed, as the suspect has been too ill to appear in court. A known white supremacist, von Brunn stands accused of entering the U.S. Memorial Holocaust Museum on June 10 and opening fire, shooting and killing security guard Stephen T. Johns. Two other guards returned fire, injuring von Brunn.

One man is dead and another injured in a double shooting that happened in Southeast D.C. at around 2 a.m. this morning, WUSA9 reports. The shooting took place in the 1200 block of Eaton Road SE, only a few blocks from the Anacostia Metro station, near the Barry Farm neighborhood. The deceased man, still unidentified, was already dead when officers arrived on scene, and the second man was taken to a hospital in stable condition. No motive or suspect so far.

D.C. police are investigating a shooting that happened Sunday night at 140 U Street NE, in the Eckington neighborhood. Fifth District commander Lamar D. Greene sent the following description to the 5D police email list:

A subject walked up to the location and began shooting at subjects on the porch. One male was shot in the arm. We are interviewing all subjects who were present at the time of the offense. Currently we have no motive established in this matter but believe this may be related to an on going feud between two groups in that area. We will continue to deploy extra officers, light towers and plain clothes officers to the area in an effort to keep arrest up and violent activity under control. If you have any information relative to this incident please call us immediately 202-727-9099.

We're getting some early reports of a shooting near New Jersey Ave. and C Street NESE, right near the U.S. Capitol. Police have locked down the Senate-side entrances to the Capitol, and emergency vehicles are blocking nearby streets. More soon. 6:01 p.m.: It appears as though this was a police-involved shooting, with the victim having been the subject of a police pursuit. Up to ten shots may have been fired, though we've alternately heard from a witness who counted five shots. The shooting victim was taken to a hospital in an ambulance. 6:08 p.m. WJLA has more details now: "Witnesses say a white Mercedes was traveling at a high rate of speed away from Union Station toward a Capitol parking area, where the vehicle crashed into a barricade. That's when gunfire erupted ... the wounded person was a 35-year-old civilian, who was shot by a U.S. law enforcement agency. Sources say it was U.S. Capitol Police." 6:32 p.m. The suspect/shooting victim, still unidentified, is reported to have died.

The Post reports that a 16-year-old was shot and killed near Nationals Park yesterday afternoon. Kevin D. Allen of Northwest D.C. was found lying in an alley on the unit block of N Street SW at around 12:30 p.m., and pronounced dead later at the hospital. That is only about a block away from Nationals Park, but there wasn't a game going on that day. No motives or suspects have been reported in the killing.

Yesterday we noted that four fatal shootings had been recorded in the city over the weekend, and now there are two more to report. The Post says that a 20-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday in the 300 block of 34th Street SE, bringing the weekend total to five (one of which has already seen an arrest made). And the AP/WJLA bring our attention to another killing early this morning: 26-year-old Anthony Reginald Ford was shot and killed of the unit block of 58th Street SE at about 1 a.m.
