Remember Friday? When it was in the mid-70s? And sunny? And people were barbecuing? Yeah, well, that was all a horrible, horrible tease. As of 2:35 this afternoon, the National Weather Service has announced a winter weather advisory for most of the D.C. metro area, beginning at 9 p.m. this evening, and calling for two to five inches of "wintry mix of rain and sleet changing over to snow." Remember the last time this region got up to five inches of wintry mix, combined with low temperatures? Because according to one forecast, "the duration and intensity should be long and high enough for accumulations on the roadways to occur so the morning commute will be affected." Like I said: horrible.
Well, This Is Just Cruel
Wintry Mix Looms
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect starting at 7 p.m. this evening all the way through to 6 p.m. on Friday. The District government has gone ahead and announced that a full deployment of its snow team will be out salting starting at 9 p.m., though the forecast, at least for now, is focused on freezing rain and sleet. Luckily, tonight's commute looks to be relatively safe, but icy conditions could greet drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike in the morning. There isn't a ton of certainty at this point about how much and exactly what kind of precipitation we might see from this storm, so exercise caution out there, and give yourself a little extra time to get to work tomorrow.
Winter Weather Advisory for Thursday Morning
The dread wintry mix that we knew was coming tomorrow is now a full-fledged Winter Weather Advisory. The advisory is currently set to last from 4 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, and includes the possibility of a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, with the potential for accumulations of about an inch of snow and/or sleet. Yuck! Luckily, looks like temperatures will warm sufficiently by the afternoon to make the possibility of icy sidewalks into the New Year's Eve revelry hours much less likely. Still, you may want to rethink those spiked heels.
Winter Weather Advisory, Winter Storm Watch for Tues.-Wed.
The National Weather Service has now issued both a Winter Weather Advisory and a Winter Storm Watch for the D.C. Metro area. The Winter Weather Advisory is effective from 4 a.m. Tuesday morning to 6 p.m. that evening, during which time 2-3" of snow is currently predicted. The Winter Storm Watch goes into effect after 6 p.m. on Tuesday through to Wed. afternoon. That system will bring everyone's favorite wintry mix to the region, which will be some combination of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain, but that will all depend on temperatures at the time.
Depressing Thought of the Afternoon
While checking in on the status of tonight's winter storm watch — which is looking like cold rain with a good chance of sleet from 6 p.m. on — one of the first thoughts I had was, "Good, hopefully the bad weather will mean fewer street murders tonight." Ugh.
