Go Home Already: Election Mayhem

Go Home Already: Election Mayhem

>> Okay, not technically voting news, but we're convinced that Britney Spears is filing for divorce today in order to sway the elections in some manner. Perhaps going on a campaign of "Don't Marry Total Effing Idiots"? [TMZ]

>> Robocalling — the new hotness? Over on his personal blog, DCist Tom explains just how it's done — and just how easy it is to do. Please don't try this at home. Seriously. [Manifest Density]

>> Representation: a right that even those in remote Tajik villages get to have. Meanwhile, here in D.C., we just get to sit around and be bitter. [SueAndNotU]

>> The GOP — could they possibly, POSSIBLY, be realizing the fact that the same sex marriage ban is completely and utterly embarrassing, humiliating, and totally stupid, amongst many other adjectives we could think of? Ehhh...probably not. [piece of ass]

>> Want to feel all inspired and patriotic? Check out the hundreds of "I Voted" pictures floating around on Flickr. It'll give you the warm and fuzzies. [Flickr]

>> Tired of the status quo here in D.C.? It may be a bit too late now, but consider a write-in campaign for a candidate who recommends that "Smith Point should be fire bombed." Sounds good! But on the other hand, he believes North Cleveland Park is a neighborhood. [Rock Creek Rambler]

>> We've been hearing that "I voted" stickers aren't being handed out at some polling places in the city. Which, outrage. Maybe that's what happened to the man in Pennsylvania who destroyed a voting machine with a metal cat statue. Which is the awesomest sentence we've typed in a long time. [Wonkette]

Where to Celebrate/Drown Your Sorrows Tonight

Where to Celebrate/Drown Your Sorrows Tonight

If you're anything like this writer, the last big election returns "party" you went to turned into a vast pit of sorrow and despair you'd like not to repeat. Or maybe you joyously tossed balloons and toasted champagne at your party's continuing reign. Either way, the fate of the next two years of our country is being decided and you need a place to go tonight to watch, with trepidation and a beer, as the results come in. This is D.C., so you've got a few options: more ›

Morning Roundup: Cab Savvy Edition

Morning Roundup: Cab Savvy Edition

Last week, we had a nice long chat about the maddening idiosyncracies of the D.C. taxicab system. The Examiner reports today that at least some of the difficulties associated with cabbing around town might be gone in the near future. Cab Commission Chairman Causton Toney has said that his organization is "seriously considering" the elimination of the zone system in favor of metered fares. The city is awaiting the results of a six-month study comparing... more ›

Smith Point's Awkward Position

Smith Point's Awkward Position

Like the double-faced Janus, there are two Smith Points. One is the Georgetown restaurant loved by neighbors for its food, the other is the exclusive club environment that gets going later toward midnight, made famous by two infamous patrons, the Bush twins. And numerous people (including these women who were apparently White House interns last summer who posted their W.H. photos on Webshots) have followed in their wake. As some community interests in Georgetown continue... more ›

Is the Fun Over for the Twins at Smith Point?

Is the Fun Over for the Twins at Smith Point?

Are the Bush twins saying "Blast! Those pesky neighborhood activists in Georgetown are ruining all our fun!"? We don't know for sure of course. But this much is known: Barbara and Jenna's favorite Georgetown hangout, Smith Point, is being scolded by the Alcohlic Beverage Control Board for its large parties. Just to be clear, Smith Point's liquor license has been renewed, but according to The Northwest Current, Smith Point must limit the number of people inside the bar to under 85 people. (Oh, wait, it's supposed to be a restaurant ...) more ›

Marriott Nixes Iranian Celebration

Marriott Nixes Iranian Celebration

There are certain celebrations that would be considered a faux pas in the nation's capital, considering U.S. foreign relations and post-Sept. 11, 2001, sensitivities. For instance, a potluck dinner commemorating the Taliban's destruction of the Bamiyan Buddahs would probably be in bad taste. And if Jenna or Barbara showed up to a costume ball at Smith Point wearing swastika arm bands in honor of Eva Braun's birthday in the style of Prince Harry, that too... more ›

Welcome Washington, This Is Your City

Welcome Washington, This Is Your City

Naturally, with the Inaguration comes the flurry of travel articles from a variety of publications giving potential visitors an overview of their capital city and a flavor of what there is to see and do while they're here. We particularly enjoyed National Journal's map of Texas superimposed on the District of Columbia. Clever, clever, National Journal (but you put Route 29 on 16th Street, and if you've read DCist you know not to fall victim to D.C. transportation trickery). Pick up a copy, as National Journal's subscription barrier prevents us from linking to it. more ›

The Twins, at Chief Ike's?

The Twins, at Chief Ike's?

What do the Bush twins and George Stephanopolis have in common? A man named Chief Ike. A DCist source tells us he ran into the Bush twins in Adams Morgan last weekend. Which makes DCist ask, whaa, Adams Morgan? It seems that Jenna and Barbara may be straying from their normal stomping grounds on Wisconsin Avenue (Smith Point, and to a lesser extent, Bourbon), or may be growing more comfortable patronizing establishements east of Rock Creek ever since the duo got the staff and management at Stetson's into a whole host of trouble back in their underage drinking days. more ›

Bush Twins Alert!

Bush Twins Alert!

Gawker media is doing its best to stir up some inside the Beltway like controversy, recently reporting on the exploits of D.C.'s version of the Hilton sisters, the Bush twins. Hey, they're all we've got and we'll follow them wherever they may be. (Oh yeah, Paris was in Georgetown this past weekend.) more ›

Poll: Chef Geoff Gaining on Bush

Poll: Chef Geoff Gaining on Bush

DCSOB points out a poll showing Ralph Nader only five points behind President Bush in the District of Columbia. Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is way ahead. DCist would like to point out that although Kerry is way ahead, Chef Geoff Tracy, husband of NBC's Norah O'Donnell, is gaining on President Bush. When we checked on Monday, the Georgetown graduate was only down by 10-15 votes at the 13th Street Chef Geoff's. We don't know if... more ›

Could Jenna Cost Bar Its Liquor License?

Could Jenna Cost Bar Its Liquor License?

The Bush twins caused Stetson's headaches a few years back when they were caught drinking underage. Under pressure, the bar's staff under went a regime change and the character of the Texas bar on U Street changed, some say for the worse. more ›
