Reminder: SoberRide Available This Weekend

During the Christmas weekend, the combination of Metro running on a reduced schedule and D.C. not enforcing parking regulations might mean more people choosing to drive to and from various parties and bars. That said, we'd like to remind everyone that SoberRide, the program which provides free cab rides during various holidays throughout the year, is back in effect. Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. today and tomorrow (as well as on New Year's Eve and Day), you can call 1-800-200-TAXI and a cab will be dispatched to your location with up to $30 in free fare on the meter. SoberRide Saved For July 4th

SoberRide, the program which offers free, dispatched taxi rides to people who have had too much to drink around the holidays, has been saved from a budget crisis just in time for Independence Day. News Channel 8 reports that several donors -- ranging from big corporations like MillerCoors and GEICO to individuals -- chipped in to fill a $31,000 gap in the Washington Regional Alcohol Program's fiscal budget which had threatened the viability of increasingly-popular initiative. more ›

No Sober Rides for Inauguration

WTOP's Mark Segraves reported yesterday that Sober Ride, the free taxi service provided by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program on major holidays, will not operate on Inauguration Day. Can't say we're too surprised, given the fact that it's usually impossible to take advantage of the service on a Halloween or New Year's Eve, let alone on a day when the city is expecting upwards of 2 million visitors and almost half the city will be closed to vehicular traffic. It's going to be hard enough to find a regular taxi on January 20; we can't imagine anyone was expecting a free ride that day. more ›
