Southwest Still Pushing for National Airport Berth

No-frills flight purveyor Southwest Airlines has been hoping to move in to DCA for a long time now, but deals between other airlines on landing and takeoff slots have thus far prevented them from going forward. Now, as the Post reports, they're asking the feds to get involved:

On Monday, the low-cost, Texas-based carrier asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to force US Airways and Delta Air Lines to auction off 14 landing and takeoff slots at the airport to the highest bidder in a public sale.
See, US Airways and Delta had agreed to a big flight slot swap between La Guardia and National, but the FAA told them they had to give up those additional 14 as well if they wanted to proceed. The airlines, however, are balking, and Southwest is claiming it's because they fear allowing the low-cost airline's successful business model to spread into yet another market. more ›

So suddenly it's chilly? Yesterday we were all sweaty messes, but today, with highs predicted to stay in the 60s, we're wearing sweaters. All this temperature-related confusion has led us to look longingly at the Southwest Airlines web site, since the airline finally began service from Dulles this morning. Cheap flights to Vegas are looking pretty sweet. And while we're of course very sad to be reminded of the demise of our hometown airline, we take some comfort knowing that the airline that replaced it actually trains its flight attendants be snarky. Councilmembers: SWA Needs D.C. Flag

D.C. is feeling unloved by Southwest Airlines. Despite the fact that the discount airline doesn't fly into the District of Columbia, the D.C. Council may take up a resolution asking Southwest to add a D.C. flag to planes flying to Maryland's BWI airport, the AP, via WJLA, reports. Southwest currently has Maryland One, which flies with the flag of the Free State. more ›
