Another violent daytime crime in the District to report this afternoon. At approximately 2:50 p.m., two transgendered men were stabbed in front of 209 Q Street NW, D.C. police said. Both of the victims were transported to area hospitals, where one of them died a short time later. Police would not speculate on a possible motive in the attack, though a suspect is said to have been spotted fleeing the scene before first responders arrived. FOX 5 also has the story.
A 16-year-old girl was stabbed last night at 1024 Kenyon Street NW at about 11 p.m., WJLA reports, and the attack stemmed from a feud between two "girl gangs" who were upset about something one of them posted on a MySpace page, according to D.C. Council member Jim Graham. The victim, Graham says, is thankfully expected to recover. The incident is sure to prompt several infuriating "Are Your Children Safe on MySpace??!!!" stories on the local news stations tonight, as there's nothing broadcasters love more than blaming the medium of the Internet for bad behavior. It would certainly be refreshing to see a report on this story based on the facts: teenage girls are often mean to each other, with or without social networking web sites.
WJLA is reporting a police-involved shooting at a mental health group home on 800 block of 7th Street NE.
It may be grim out on D.C.'s streets, with eight homicides in the past seven days, but we'll say one thing about the job local law enforcement is doing right now: talk about some swift arrests. Yesterday, MPD arrested two suspects in the stabbing death of 14-year-old Giovanni Sanchez, which took place on Friday, and today, Metro Transit Police announced that they have arrested Dekeria Green, 18, in the stabbing at the 13th and U entrance to the U Street/Cardozo Metro stop, which took place on Saturday. That stabbing was reportedly the result of an argument that spilled out onto the street between club goers at The Republic. The Post reports that Metro police used security camera footage to help make an arrest, and that more arrests are possible. The MPD also assisted in the investigation.
Mayor Fenty and Chief Lanier held a press conference this morning to announce that arrests have been made in the stabbing death of Giovanni Sanchez, 14, in Columbia Heights on Friday. The Post was there and reports that Hector Diaz and a minor whose name was not released are being charged in the killing, which took place in the middle of the afternoon at the intersection of 14th and Newton streets NW.
This story about a New York City bus driver who was stabbed to death over a bus transfer. Horrific. You can be sure plenty of people will complain and struggle against the new SmarTrip-only transfer regime about to be put in place on Metrorail and Metrobus, but if it prevents even one incident like this in our city, it will have been worth the growing pains.
Via the Washington Post, news of a really bad fight at Anacostia High School in Southeast that sent five students to the hospital. Three students suffered "superficial cuts" during a knife fight, another was injured, and a fifth had an asthma attack. To top it all off, someone started a small fire just as the fight was ending, and then another group students got into a second fight after the entire school was cleared and led out onto the football field. What a terrible day for students at Anacostia High.
