Live Free or Don't: N.H. Representatives Nix D.C. Statehood Bill
Despite a day of testimony from District officials and D.C. voting rights activists, a New Hampshire House of Representatives committee declined Friday to support a resolution endorsing D.C. statehood. The bill can still be heard in the full state legislature, however.
"Suck it, Washington, D.C. Suck it Dipped in Tang"
"Suck it, Washington, D.C. Suck it dipped in Tang." Yep, that just about sums up how we're feeling after Newt Gingrich figured that a moon colony was more deserving of statehood.
Gingrich Wants Statehood for... the Moon?
Newt Gingrich spent much of a speech late Wednesday night in Florida talking about his plans for a U.S. base on the moon, even suggesting it might become the 51st state.
Mark Plotkin Out at WTOP
Political commentator and vocal statehood advocate Mark Plotkin has left WTOP, the Post's Erik Wemple reports.
Birthday Parties Are More Fun Than Speeches Anyway
Even though WTOP's Mark Plotkin got all worked up about it, Mayor Vince Gray was invited to the State of the Union, just not by the White House. But he had other plans Tuesday night.
Statehood Trip to New Hampshire Back On, Snow Not Invited
A trip to New Hampshire to lobby for D.C. statehood that was postponed by snow in the Granite State has been rescheduled for January 27.
Statehood Tour Is Going to Be Pretty Crowded
At a quick press conference yesterday before the D.C. Council's first legislative session of 2012, Mayor Vince Gray and most of the D.C. Council touted their upcoming trip to New Hampshire, where they will lobby the state legislature there to endorse District statehood.

Don't Celebrate Yet -- Repeal Day Isn't Until March
Yay! It's Repeal Day, the day on which we celebrate the 1933 constitutional amendment to abandon the wrong-headed policy of prohibition. Everywhere but in the District, that is.
Seven D.C. Voting Rights Protesters Found Guilty
After one dropped case and one acquittal, seven of the remaining eight D.C. voting rights protesters put on trial for arrests at demonstrations in April were found guilty today of blocking traffic. One other protester was acquitted.
Statehood Ads Hit Metrobuses
A new campaign for statehood devised by Councilmember Michael A. Brown (I-At Large) was officially presented today, and you might soon see it rolling right by you.
November 3, 1964: D.C. Votes in First Presidential Election
On this day in 1964, District voters cast their first presidential ballots since the city was established in 1800.
Statehood, Branded
Residents, activists and local politicians have long spoken about the District becoming the 51st state, but no one has sought to actively brand the cause. Until now.
No Statehood, But Maybe One Statue!
Achieving statehood would obviously take a while, but how long should it take D.C. to get a single statue in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol? Just as long, as it seems.
Panetta Emerges From the Shadows
D.C. Shadow Representative Mike Panetta has decided that he won't be running again after spending three terms as one part of the District's three-man Shadow Delegation.
Three Men and a Cheerleader
WHEREAS, Mayor Vince Gray thinks that television and film star Hayden Panettiere "has proven not only her acting chops, but also her commitment to the cause of full democracy for the people of the District of Columbia,” and...
D.C. Voting Rights Goes Hollywood
Admit it -- that's a look that says, "I want you to support the District's efforts in achieving voting rights, self-determination and statehood."
Obama Supports Statehood and Self-Determination
In recent months, President Barack Obama has quietly endorsed a path forward for self-determination and statehood. Great news, right? Yeah. For Puerto Rico.

Live free -- and show solidarity -- or die: New Hampshire State Representative Cindy Rosenwald has filed a bill which would "formally declare the New Hampshire House of Representatives’ support for full representative democracy for citizens of the District of Columbia."
Youngsters Jump Into Fight for Statehood
The fight for D.C. voting rights, self-determination and statehood isn't a young one, and neither are many of the selfless people that have been pushing to end the city's second-class status for decades on end. But two local activists are hoping to change that.
In The Interest Of Equal Time
I suppose it's only fair that since we highlighted Mayor Vince Gray's appearance on CNN yesterday, we should also share his interview on The O'Reilly Factor last night. Gray handled himself pretty well -- at least as well as any prominent liberal politician can possibly handle themselves on the show -- as Bill O'Reilly, who called D.C. "kind of like a city-state they used to have in Greece," prodded him with questions about statehood and the congressional budget deal.
Michael A. Brown Is An Unstoppable Street Renaming Machine
Remember when Michael A. Brown asked the public to help him come up with snappy ideas to rename a street in the District to something statehood related? (You were all so quick to pitch in!) Well, so many people told Brown they liked the idea that the at-large Councilmember is planning to introduce a bill to redub three major streets -- Pennsylvania, Independence and Constitution Avenues -- to D.C. Statehood Way, Let D.C. Vote Way and Free D.C. Avenue, respectively. Nah, that won't confuse anyone.
Brown Calls For Help With Crafting Statehood Street Name
D.C. Councilmember Michael A. Brown (Ind.-At-Large), who chaired on the Council's Special Committee on Statehood and Self-Determination before the body killed it last summer, has been busy on the statehood front: he recently met with new D.C. budget overlord Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) and introduced the "District of Columbia as the 51st State of the Union Resolution of 2011". The real ace up Brown's sleeve is a push to slap a statehood slogan on a street somewhere the District. But he needs your help, Washington!
Norton Introduces Warmed-Over Voting Rights Options
Fresh off of the loss of one of her few Congressional perks, D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton today introduced three pieces of legislation that, by varying degrees, would address the District's lack of voting rights.
Gray Joins Protest To Save Norton's House Vote
D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton hasn't ever gotten much in the U.S. House of Representatives. But for the last few years, she's at least been able to vote on most rudimentary matters that come before the full legislative body. But unless Republicans change their mind, she'll lose that privilege tomorrow -- just as she did in 1995 when Republicans last took control of the House. Today, Mayor Vince Gray joined Norton, members of the D.C. Democratic State Committee, voting rights advocates, and residents in a demonstration at the House where they demanded that Norton's vote remain in place.
D.C. Governance Vs. The World
One interesting aspect of Vince Gray's campaign was his view on D.C. statehood. Gray took a much more assertive view than Adrian Fenty, going as far as advocating for civil disobedience. It remains to be seen if the presumptive Mayor Gray will handcuff himself to a light pole holding a sign "Honk if you support voting rights!" Perhaps, though, we will see some more serious dialogue on what the future holds for the District and its place in the union.
Panetta Proposes Statehood Plates for D.C.
Virginia may have its Horse Enthusiast and Wildlife Mallard license plates, but if one local D.C. voting rights activist has his way, the District might get some special plates of our own.
A Story's End (In Remembrance)
One year ago, the District lost Clark Sabine, who played in Statehood, The Motorcycle Wars, and Metropolitan, among other collaborations. He died after a long battle with cancer. Anyone who ever saw him perform knows he had a hell of a stage presence, and those who never had the opportunity have got to read Aaron Leitko's eulogy -- which doubles as a brief history of rock and roll in the District. I'm a fan of Statehood's and bought a copy today for my brother -- less to mark the day, really, than to introduce someone else to Sabine's talent.
D.C. Council Kills Statehood Committee
City Desk reports that the D.C. Council has killed the Special Committee on Statehood and Self-Determination -- and it's Council member Marion Barry's (D-Ward 8) fault.
