Traffic Closures for Triathlon Tomorrow

Those of you looking to move around the city by car tomorrow morning, take note: the fourth annual Nation's Triathlon will close down various streets from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. The triathlon involves a swim in the Potomac, a bike ride through D.C. and a 10K around the monuments, all winding up at the banks of the Tidal Basin.

Massive Downtown Street Closures For Triathlon Tomorrow

Thinking about driving around the Mall tomorrow? Uh, I'd think real, real hard about that one: tomorrow is the D.C. stop on the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series tour. (Try saying that five times fast.) There's a boatload of closures around the race course in the downtown area, including many major entrances into and exits out of D.C., such as the Whitehurst Freeway, Clara Barton Parkway, Rock Creek Parkway, and Maine Avenue off the Southeast and Southwest Freeways.

Memorial Day Weekend Road Closures for Special Events

The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police are warning area drivers about the following temporary road closures for events scheduled over the Memorial Day weekend.

The massive two-year-long 14th Street bridge construction project was scheduled to begin on Monday, but the start of work has been postponed until Tuesday, May 26, the day after Memorial Day, WTOP reports. The change in plan is due to a need to coordinate traffic control with the National Park Service, according to DDOT.

DDOT reports that H Street NE has been closed between 5th and 7th Streets due to a gas main break. The gas leak is reportedly at 624 H Street NE, right outside the H Street Self Storage building. Traffic is being detoured around the area.

Chain Bridge Repair Work to Cause Delays

If you drive over the Chain Bridge on a regular basis, take note that delays are headed your way.

Florida Ave. Won't Reopen Until Saturday Evening

The word on high from DDOT after Wednesday's massive water main break in the 1700 block of Florida Ave. is that the street won't reopen until Saturday evening, weather permitting. DDOT engineers spent today assessing the damage and came up with this time estimate. Work crews have already backfilled the large hole in the roadway, and are now preparing for the complete reconstruction of the road surface from V Street to Champlain Street. The work will also include the repair or replacement of damaged curbs and brick gutters, and sidewalk repairs as necessary.

D.C. Police have closed a number of streets around the 2700 block of 29th St. NW due to a woman threatening to jump off the top of a building there. 29th St. NW is currently closed between Woodley and Calvert Streets, along with a section of McGill Terrace. The police situation is ongoing; note the closures for your commute home.

Florida Ave. Remains Closed After Water Main Break

DDOT has sent around word that Florida Ave. NW between 17th Street and California remains closed due to this morning's massive water main break. The 1700 block of V Street NW is also closed at this time. From the release:

WASA crews are on site and are working to repair the broken 20-inch water main. There is significant damage to the roadway as well, and it is likely to take at least several hours to complete the repairs. In the meantime, motorists are advised to use alternate routes including U Street, to detour around the affected area.
In other words, the evening commute in this area is going to be a mess. Go around it if at all possible. City Desk has more photos of the flooding, and the Post has video of the impressively large sinkhole that formed as a result.

Street Closures for Howard University Commencement

As we told you on Monday in our first installment of the Commencement Speaker Scouting Report, Howard University will be leading off this season's college graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 9. Howard University Police Chief Leroy K. James announced the following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic for several days in preparation for commencement activities. Most of these closures are on the Howard campus, but LeDroit Park and Shaw residents will want to make a note of them.

Water Main Break at 17th & Florida Ave NW

City officials are responding to a large water main break in the 1700 Block of Florida Ave., along with an accompanying gas leak and sinkhole. WTOP quotes a D.C. fire department spokesperson saying the break has led to basement flooding in homes around the vicinity of 18th and U Streets NW.

The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel sent word around today that DeSales St. NW between Connecticut Ave. NW and 17th St. NW will be closed starting at 4:30 p.m. for a traditional Hindu wedding procession. D.C. residents Shilpa Maheshwari and Neil Agarwal are getting married today, and the Baraat ceremony will involve the groom arriving on an elephant as he and his family proceed down DeSales St. The hotel is offering local media interview opportunities with the father of the bride, as well as encouraging people to use the outdoor part of the ceremony as a photo op ... we certainly hope the bride and groom got a discount on their ballroom rental in exchange for their special day being offered up as potential PR fodder.

IMF/World Bank Protest Details

As Martin mentioned this morning, the spring meetings of the IMF/World Bank Board of Governors are this weekend, bringing with them the usual street closures and parking restrictions. We've posted the full list of closures below in case you need to refer to them this weekend, but before you read those, we thought you might enjoy a taste of the press release sent around to every local media outlet in town this morning by some of the folks who are organizing this year's protests. NB: the protesters won't reveal exactly where they'll be until early Saturday morning. Also, we're told to expect the protests to include upwards of ... 30 people. Gotta say, the promise of a group of protesters roughly the size of a second grade class doesn't make for a very impressive announcement.

An autonomous group of D.C. residents will be taking action to disrupt the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings on Saturday, April 25th. Angered by world leaders' handling of the economic crisis and the G20's recent decision to empower the IMF with $1.1 trillion in spite of their longstanding track record of ignoring basic human rights and environmental concerns, this group will engage in a variety of actions including traffic blockades, street theater, and roving street occupations.

WTOP is reporting a partial street collapse on Connecticut Ave. NW, just north of the Cleveland Park Metro station. Some metal plates that were covering up utility cuts on the southbound lanes collapsed this morning, leaving only one left lane for traffic. No injuries have been reported, but you might want to steer clear of the area while crews work to replace the metal plate.

The Suntrust National Marathon is tomorrow, Saturday March 21, and much of the city will be affected by mass road closures and detours.

Inauguration Road Closures Announced

As expected, the U.S. Secret Service, along with regional transportation officials and the MPD, unveiled their plan yesterday to close all Potomac River bridge crossings on Inauguration Day. The announcement also included the above map, which shows plans to close off almost 3.5 square miles of downtown Washington to vehicular traffic starting at 3 p.m. on January 19 until the morning of January 21. You can download PDFs of both the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Public Affairs Subcommittee Joint Transportation Plan and the Secret Service Security Plan at the D.C. government's Getting There web site. Both documents contain extensive information on road closures and restrictions throughout the inaugural celebration period. Maryland and Virginia also have special web sites set up with the latest information. Below the jump, you'll find excerpts from the recent announcements that include lists of road closures and traffic restrictions. Of special note for those of you planning on walking down to the National Mall for the inauguration will be the list of pedestrian access points -- you'll want to pick which way you plan to walk before you set out that morning, or you may find yourself stuck.

WMATA Updates Metrobus Detour Information Online

WMATA updated its web site late Monday afternoon with a new menu option where customers can find temporary bus detour information. The agency added the option in response to customer concerns about the Metrobus detours associated with Secret Service activity and road closures around the Hay-Adams Hotel, where President-elect Obama and his family are staying until January 15.

Metrobuses Rerouted Around Hay-Adams Hotel

You've been asking, so here's the answers so far. Yes, many Metrobus lines are being rerouted around the street closures announced over the weekend for the area surrounding the Hay-Adams Hotel, where the Obama family is living until January 15. Metro spokesperson Steven Taubenkibel pointed us to the Bus alert notice on WMATA's web site noting that the following routes are on detour around the street closures "until further notice": all of the 30 buses, plus routes 42, 11Y, G8, P17 and P19, L2, W13, S2 and S4, and X2 and X3.

Obama Watch Begins!

They're heeeere! Well, almost. The District Department of Transportation put out a press release at the end of the day Friday alerting the public to parking restrictions and street closures around the Hay-Adams Hotel, which is where the Obama family will be living beginning this weekend until January 15. The restrictions go into effect overnight tonight, so it's safe to assume the Obamas will arrive sometime early tomorrow morning.

It's that time of year when the world's finance ministers gather in Washington and tens of thousands of protesters take to the streets to demand more transparency and accountability from the World Bank and IMF. Oh wait, that's so 2000. These days, the annual meeting of the two financial institutions doesn't draw much of a protest crowd, though the city still does shut off streets around Farrugut West just in case we all decide to spontaneously rise up against global debt and poverty. Keep the closures, which include some pedestrian restrictions, in mind over the long weekend.

D.C.'s annual St. Patrick Day’s Parade is this Sunday, March 16, beginning at noon. The MPD sent around a reminder about parking restrictions and street closures, so we're posting it here.
