Cupcakepocalypse @ Red Velvet Cupcakery/Tangysweet

It's been a little slower than normal in the free food department this summer. Perhaps the tight economy is to blame? Luckily, the folks at Tangysweet are opening up another Red Velvet Cupcakery at their DuPont Circle location. To celebrate, they will be giving out free red velvet mini-cupcakes starting at noon on Friday until closing, which is 1 a.m. on Fridays. The cupcake recipes were developed by pastry chef David Guas, known for his work at the Passion Food group of restaurants.

Froyo-pocalypse at TangySweet Penn Quarter

Thursday marks the opening of the second TangySweet location, this one in Penn Quarter (the former Juan Valdez Cafe). The store is in addition to their latest trendy venture - Red Velvet Cupcakery. To celebrate the opening, they will be serving up free frozen yogurt from 11a.m. to 11 p.m. Take a look at our story on the opening of the first Tangysweet location. Dish of the Week: Bacon-Balsamic Brussels Sprouts

It uses Valrhona chocolate, and can be topped off with homemade whipped cream and a choice of Valrhona shavings, mint, and cinnamon. It doesn't take a background in PR or advertising to know that Pinkberry, Red Mango, and other similar frozen yogurt brands are, at the moment, red hot. For those of you unfamiliar with the product, the concept is simple: take low or non-fat yogurt, freeze it, and top it off with your choice of fresh fruits or other toppings.
