While the local food scene is better known for Salvadoran pupusas, it doesn't stop many a displaced Californian (or Texan or Arizonan) from the fervent pursuit of an authentic Mexican taco.
Desperately Seeking Tacos
The Weekly Feed: Offally Good Edition
It may be a bit kitschy going with a Halloween theme for the dish of the week, but offal is delicious, though perhaps a little stomach-turning for some. In olden times, it only seemed obvious to make something out of every part of the animal. But in a world of industrial food production, it seems most people only turn to the prime portions - breasts, hams, steaks, etc. That leaves behind a multitude of organs, bits and bobs that no longer seem as palatable in the face of conventional proteins. Offal can be a challenge for some - gelatinous, chewy, squeaky or pasty textures. But for those who love the variety it is a treat.

The beef taco commonly prepared in the American kitchen is one of the biggest culinary travesties DCist has encountered to date. Ground beef beaten to a pulp and over seasoned with a packet of salty herbs and spices. It's enough to bring tears to our eyes; not in a good way either.
Warning: Not-to-Be-Missed Tacos and Burritos
Austin Grill) and big-time chains (read Chipotle), Taqueria Distrito Federal is neither of the above. This Columbia Heights taco joint is the real deal. The menu is honed to the bare essentials and specialties with burritos and tacos and homemade soft drinks like tamarind juice and horchata, a cinnamony concoction made of pulverized rice. Nothing exceeds $5. When DCist ventured over there, two ate for $13 -- and it was damn good.
