Baggage Surcharge for Taxicabs Reinstated in Fare Proposal

The D.C. Taxicab Commission announced yesterday that it would restore a baggage-handling surcharge that it had originally removed from a fare increase proposal that will likely take effect in the coming months. more ›

Got Thoughts on the Taxicab Rate Change? Testify Tomorrow!

Got Thoughts on the Taxicab Rate Change? Testify Tomorrow!

Plenty of people have opinions on proposed rate increases for D.C. taxicabs that would see per-mile charge rise from $1.50 to $2.16 while many surcharges are scrapped. Express yours tomorrow. more ›

Cab Crashes Into Front Steps of Friendship Heights Mall

DCist contributor James Calder stumbled upon quite an interesting site this morning -- a taxicab that had apparently lost control and found its way onto the steps of the Chevy Chase Pavilion in Friendship Heights. more ›

What Comes First: Taxi Rate Hikes or Service Improvements?

What Comes First: Taxi Rate Hikes or Service Improvements?

Should taxicab fare increase help fund service improvements, or should improvements be a condition of eventual increases? That's what the D.C. Taxicab Commission will start debating tomorrow. more ›

Upfront Payment May Come to D.C. Taxicabs

Upfront Payment May Come to D.C. Taxicabs

Another proposal which will be considered by the D.C. Taxicab Commission tomorrow would allow drivers to ask for pre-payment of the estimated fare at the start of the ride during the hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. more ›

Under Proposal, Taxicab Rates Would Increase

Under Proposal, Taxicab Rates Would Increase

You may not be happy with the quality of service offered by the District's taxicabs, nor might you be happy that any upgrades could well be paid for by a surcharge on all fees. But taxicab drivers have long complained that they're not getting paid enough, and one proposal has been presented to increase how much they can charge riders. more ›

D.C. Cab Commission Renews $1 Fuel Surcharge

D.C. Cab Commission Renews $1 Fuel Surcharge

Over the past week, we've had a couple of readers telling us that taxis around town had been altering notices for the in-place $1 fuel surcharge, replacing the July 26 end date with November 12. A case of rogue cabbies? Nope, it's above-board. more ›

An All-Terrain Taxi Would Have Probably Helped

An All-Terrain Taxi Would Have Probably Helped

DCist reader John Duckwitz sent us these images of a taxicab driver who appears to have gotten a little mixed up while leaving the the Westin City Center hotel at 1400 M Street NW this afternoon -- the cabbie apparently decided to eixt the pickup zone via the pedestrian staircase. Our phone call to the hotel in search of some details regarding how the cab driver managed to pull this off -- and how they managed to get the taxi out of there -- has not yet been returned. more ›

Cab Driver Drives Onto McMillan Sand Filtration Site

Now here's something you don't see everyday: this afternoon, a cab driver apparently drove his taxi through a wire fence and into the middle of the McMillan Sand Filtration Site. more ›

Taxi Crashes into Building in Dupont Circle

Taxi Crashes into Building in Dupont Circle

Reader Ryan Samuel K. sends in this image of a taxi that hopped the sidewalk by the CVS on Dupont Circle this morning and smashed into the facade of the building. Ryan says he happened by the scene at about 8:25 a.m. No reports of any injuries, and DCist's Aaron Morrissey reports that a tow truck has since arrived to haul away the wreck. The damage appears to be fairly minimal, though a "no parking" sign was completely demolished. more ›

Is There a Taxi Strike Today?

Is There a Taxi Strike Today?

We've heard from several readers who spotted fliers around town in the last week advertising a taxi cab strike in the District today. The strike is reportedly to protest the effect the current taxi meter rates have on cabbie income (many argue they now make less money). WTOP has also heard about the strike, but they say participation is spotty, so you can still get a cab if you need one. Given the unique nature of D.C.'s taxi business, it's almost impossible to account for all the different taxi driver alliances and groups out there, let alone the independent, unaffiliated drivers. So you tell us: were there fewer cabs on the streets this morning, or did you not even notice? more ›

DMV Inspectors Fired for Taking Small Bribes From Cabbies

DMV Inspectors Fired for Taking Small Bribes From Cabbies

At least five D.C. DMV inspectors have been fired for accepting small cash bribes from cab drivers looking to sail through the inspection process despite deficiencies in their vehicles. Johnson's got photos, presumably taken by honest DMV employees, of the interiors of several taxis where drivers leave between $20-$50 for inspectors, hoping they'll look the other way. more ›

No Sober Rides for Inauguration

WTOP's Mark Segraves reported yesterday that Sober Ride, the free taxi service provided by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program on major holidays, will not operate on Inauguration Day. Can't say we're too surprised, given the fact that it's usually impossible to take advantage of the service on a Halloween or New Year's Eve, let alone on a day when the city is expecting upwards of 2 million visitors and almost half the city will be closed to vehicular traffic. It's going to be hard enough to find a regular taxi on January 20; we can't imagine anyone was expecting a free ride that day. more ›

Cab Disasters

Cab Disasters

Thanks to the new meters, many of the complaints about cabs in D.C. have been erased: at least there's no debate about the fare. However, that doesn't mean it's all hunky-dory. The other day, I was taking a cab from Columbia Heights to downtown, and the cab was a disaster area. more ›

Cab Driver Shot In Northeast

WTOP reports that a man exited a silver Crown Victoria taxicab last night and opened fire on Webster Street in Northeast, severely wounding the driver. Details are still very sketchy, but the driver was struck several times and is in critical condition. The assailant escaped on foot. Police are still investigating exactly why the suspect shot the driver. more ›

Woman Sexually Assaulted By Her Cab Driver

On the list of nightmarish experiences city-dwelling women dread, this one is right near the top. WJLA reported last night that a Capitol Hill woman says she was sexually assaulted by a cab driver who was taking her home. Dawn Young said she hailed a normal looking cab at 8th and G SE on Saturday night, because she thought it would be safer than making the short walk home alone. The cab driver asked her to sit in the front seat, and then proceeded to pull into an alley and park next to a wall to prevent her from escaping. He locked the doors and then proceeded to sexually assault her. Thankfully, Young got away. The WJLA report doesn't say anything about whether she was able to provide a description of her attacker. Here's hoping this cab driver is caught without delay.
