What happened to the Washington Capitals in its loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday? According to team owner Ted Leonsis, his guys looked "flat" during the game.
Leonsis: Caps Looked 'Flat' in Loss to Rangers
Wizards Wave Wand, Coach Disappears
The Washington Wizards have fired head coach Flip Saunders after two-and-a-half losing seasons.
Leonsis Wants Digital Signs on Verizon Center Exterior
Even though it's one of the city's most trafficked commercial areas, people sure can be awfully uppity about sensory additions around the Verizon Center. That said, one can only imagine the uproar that's to come regarding the news that arena owner Ted Leonsis would like to install several new digital exterior displays on the side of the stadium.
Wizards Unveil New Uniforms, Logo
The Washington Wizards unveiled a new logo and uniforms this morning, switching to a familiar red, white and blue motif and bringing back a font and logo which harkens back to the team's glory days. The design brings all of Leonsis' sporting interests -- the Wizards, Capitals and Mystics -- under the same patriotic theme.
The Wizards Spring Forward, But Will They Fall Back?
Two weeks ago against the Miami Heat, the Washington Wizards played their hearts out for three quarters, only to fall short in the fourth, 102-90. John Wall was ejected, but Jordan Crawford stepped up admirably and scored 39 points in a valiant, but losing effort. After the game, the Heat's Dwyane Wade had some interesting comments about Crawford's performance.
'Our Time': Great For VCU, Not So Much For Wizards
It's "our time" for VCU head coach Shaka Smart and his Final Four-bound Rams. But for the Wizards -- who trained on VCU's home floor in 2009 -- when is that time going to come?
Ted Leonsis' Little Monsters
The blogging owner of the Washington Wizards loves to feed the monster and to have the monster fed to his benefit. But does it have to be so scary?
More Hope Than A Hopeless Wizards/Bullets History
Terrible, just flat-out terrible. You know how the RZA pronounces the word "ridiculous" at the end of Kanye's "So Appalled"? Yes, that. That applied to this Washington Wizards team. I've seen a lot of bad Wizards/Bullets, teams, but this year's squad has the unique distinction of being one of the worst in franchise history, yet also filled with the most hope. Winning percentage-wise, the current Wiz Kids are tied as the sixth worst in franchise history, and tied for the fourth worst in my lifetime following the franchise. Let travel down memory lane, shall we?
Verily, The Future Is Now
Behold, the Bottoms Up Draft Beer Dispensing System -- which is now in place at the Verizon Center, says arena owner Ted Leonsis. The taps, the brainchild of GrinOn Industries, can reportedly allow one person to fill 44 pints of beer in one minute. It involves magnets, or something.
Patience With The Impatient
Being a Wizards fan requires patience with yourself -- and patience with the impatient.
Leonsis Gives A "Dougie" Preview, Urge To Buy Tickets Rising
Remember when Washington Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, inspired by the moves of John Wall, said that he would perform the "Dougie" when the Wizards sold out a (non-marquee) game this year? Well, Leonsis, always the savvy businessman, gave WTOP a little taste of his version of the dance this morning.
Ted Leonsis: "I Will Do The 'Dougie'" When Wizards Sellout
Most of Washington's sports world has been enamored with John Wall's performances on Tuesday night. And while Wall's near-triple-double in an overtime win against the Philadelphia 76ers was pretty nifty, we found ourselves more taken with Wall's pre-game dancing, in which he pulled off a fantastic version of the "Dougie," despite having a bit of a bum wheel. Never one to shy away from a fan-friendly endeavor, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis wants to get in on the act. On his blog today, Leonsis said that he would perform his own version of the "Dougie" when the Wizards sellout a game this season. Paid attendance at Tuesday's game against Philadelphia, the team's home opener, was 17,803 -- and capacity at the Verizon Center for basketball games is 20,173. Looking at the Wizards schedule, we'll bet that Leonsis shouldn't need to worry about his moves anytime soon -- the first game that leaps out to us as a real sellout possibility is when the Lakers come to D.C. on December 14. That said, we're very curious to see whether Leonsis' "Dougie" is any better than our local politicians' moves.
So Motivated, It Hurts
Ted Leonsis likes to make lists. Of 101 things. He's had this one for a while, his own personal bucket list. It includes goals like having a net worth of one hundred million dollars after taxes, owning a jet and inventing a board game -- all of which he's accomplished. (But he hasn't been to Alaska yet. Take that, Mr. Overachiever!)
All Your Emails Are Belong To Him
Last week, we told you that Ted Leonsis had established a new email address which he planned to use as a way of connecting on a one-to-one level with Wizards fans while his ownership of the team got off the ground. And boy, are people ever emailing. Leonsis confessed that he had received "more than 2000 emails" at the new address, even being so kind as to make a list of the most commonly requested improvements. Most of them are obvious: "Don’t trade your first round picks," "Change colors for team uniforms," "Continue Pollin legacy for charitable efforts," and so on. All fine ideas. But if there was any doubt that Leonsis needs to seriously improve the product on the court, it has to be clear now: yours truly counted 47 suggestions ("Paint the stairs"?) that would probably be far less noticeable to fans if the Wiz were actually playing decent ball, night in and night out.
Sale of Wizards to Leonsis Approved
Well what do you know, there's some non-Strasburg sports news today after all. Wizards Insider reports that the sale of the Washington Wizards to Ted Leonsis has been approved by the NBA Board of Governors.
Deal in Place for Sale of Wizards, Verizon Center to Leonsis
Just breaking now from the Post: the estate of Abe Pollin has at last agreed to sell the Washington Wizards and the Verizon Center to Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. We'll have more on this soon, but in the meantime we hope news of the sale being finalized will encourage all you stressed out Caps fans to stay optimistic.
Leonsis Reaches Agreement on Price for Wizards, Verizon Center
The Washington Post is reporting that Capitals owner Ted Leonsis has reached an agreement with the estate of Abe Pollin on a price for the Washington Wizards and the Verizon Center. The figure is said to be around $550 million. The deal's not yet done, according to unnamed sources cited by the Post, as they still have to hammer out "non-financial issues such as the operations of the arena." Still, news that the two camps have been able to tentatively agree on a number is good news for Leonsis, who's surely hoping to have a deal in place before June, when the NBA draft takes place.
Leonsis: 'We'll End Up Buying' the Wizards
Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis pledged last night that despite an apparent negotiating rift between him and the estate of Abe Pollin, he would eventually succeed in his attempt to buy the Washington Wizards. Speaking at an event to promote his new book, The Business of Happiness, Leonsis was asked by an audience member to comment on the potential sale.
Why Caps Fans Are Happy
Right now, your average Capitals fans is as happy as a lobbyist with a wad of cash to spend. Their team is riding the best winning streak in franchise history. Alex Ovechkin is crashing every NHL goalie's party and leading the league in goals, points, and plus-minus, with his teammates cracking the top five in two of those categories.
Ted Leonsis Invites the Capstronaut to the Owners Box
For all the complaining Redskins fans do about their much-hated ownership, Caps fans have to feel lucky. How many team owners post whimsical invitations to the owners box to a random fan who happens to wear an astronaut costume?
Ted Leonsis: Friendliest Man In Town
Ted Leonsis has reached Facebook's limit of 5,000 friends. Leonsis has made more than 3,9002,900 friends since mid-April, when he blogged that he had almost 2,100 and asked, in typically affable style, "if this is winning, why do I sometimes feel like such a loser for being so connected? :-)"
Try Out for the Capitals Spirit Squad OMG!
Eli's recent Caps update reminds us that tonight is the start of tryouts for the Capitals' much maligned Spirit Squad. As you may recall, hockey fans were outraged when the Caps first advertised for the squad, causing owner Ted Leonsis to say that revenue was the main reason the squad was created.
Caps Briefing: Pothier Hoping to Return
Just yesterday, the first reader question Hockey News columnist Adam Proteau answered about the entire NHL came from a Caps fan frustrated about the lack of information about Brian Pothier's recovery from a serious concussion. Pothier missed the second half of last season and all of the playoffs, and was believed close to retirement. But one frustrated fan wanted to know for sure.
Caps Briefing: Spreading Belief
With one week left until the start of the regular season, the hockey world has been divided into two camps along the question of whether the Capitals will make the playoffs this year. The first camp consists of every Caps fan with a blog, up to and including team owner Ted Leonsis. All agree that the team can do it. The second camp contains every other fan and writer in the hockey universe, who agree...
DCist Interview: Ted Leonsis
Recently we caught up with Washington Capitals owner and former Vice Chairman of America Online, Ted Leonsis, over email. Here's what Ted had to say about his role in the organization, his goals for the team, and his feelings toward the media. Please note that he uses emoticons without shame. DCist: Now that you're completely retired from AOL, how much fun is it to get up every morning and not have to go to work?...
Caps Briefing: When Russian Jaws Are Flapping
Well, it's been several weeks since we got a false report out of Russia saying that Washington Capitals superstar left winger Alexander Ovechkin savagely attacked someone. Therefore it came as no surprise yesterday when we got an apparently false report out of Russia saying that Alexander Ovechkin broke a hockey agent's jaw in a bar fight. Last time, we had to watch the video to see that nothing happened. This time all we have is...
United / Caps Mashup?
We've mentioned our respect and admiration for Dan Steinberg and his wonderful D.C. Sports Bog in this space before. Dan's a fantastic, knowledgeable writer with a flair for great, off-beat stories that surround the events he's covering and quite frankly, if you're not reading his blog, you're missing out. That said, our respect for him has grown even more this week after his seemingly wacky idea to get as many area Caps fans out...
