. Seriously, there's plenty to like in January, from gutsy works to brand-new musicals.

It's not exactly a banner day for D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier. The Examiner takes the chief to task a bit this morning for her latest "All Hands on Deck" initiative: four people were shot in the course of an hour during the second night of the effort, which also coincided with National Night Out events, and the force is seriously short handed today as well as Wednesday and Friday to avoid spending millions on...

Dust off that guitar, break out the hammer dulcimer, or put on those tap shoes because on May 10 and May 12, Metro's Art in Transit Program and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities are holding open auditions for live performances at Metrorail stations. The auditions are being held as part of Metroperforms!, a program bringing live performers to yet-to-be-determined Metro stations through the summer (we first told you about it last year)...

When we spied a fire truck driving down Georgia Avenue on Saturday morning with a banner promoting Muriel Bowser, we were confused. After all, Bowser is a candidate in the coming special election for Ward 4, and last we checked, city vehicles are stricly off-limits for campaign purposes. Well, we weren't the only ones miffed by the emergency vehicle's use as a campaign tool. From yesterday's installment of themail, D.C. Watch's bi-weekly online newsletter: On...

This post is by new DCist contributor Matt Pelkey. It’s almost Friday and a drink or two may sound like a great way to decompress. But happy hour shouldn’t always be about forgetting a tough week, so tonight toast to local business and a thriving community instead. Mount Pleasant Main Street, one of ten DC Main Streets programs, is sponsoring a wine tasting this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Dos Gringos restaurant,...

Breaking just now: The DC Voting Rights Act (now H.R. 1905) is scheduled to return to the House Floor tomorrow, Thursday for a vote. The move comes after a week of speculation that Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had removed the bill from this week's schedule for unclear reasons. Today it is now definite: the bill will come to a vote tomorrow. The bill originally stalled on the House Floor last month after three Republican...

For months, there have been virtually no developments in United's attempts to build a soccer-specific stadium at Poplar Point, east of the Anacostia River. That changed yesterday, when Steve Goff's indispensible Soccer Insider ran a post announcing a potential roadblock to stadium development. Given the abundance of Goff's own reporting on the blog, we were surprised when he went and posted a press release in its entirety. The "press release" was titled in forboding capital...

> >UPDATE: As a commenter notes, The Dismemberment Plan tickets for the second show, Friday, April 27 are on sale NOW. Go, friends, go! > > Best birthday present ever? Hmmm. Submitted for your approval: How about booking the Thievery Corporation? To play the birthday boy's living room? Well played, ma'am. Well played. [The Upstate Life] > > Why isn't Butterstick playing in the snow like his parents? Maybe it's because he doesn't want to...

>> Bad news: The Sex Worker Art Show at the Rock and Roll Hotel has been cancelled due to inclement weather. Check the HIPS website for news of a possible reschedule date.

Caroline Bartman knows her scientists. And her pop culture references. And her U.S. presidents. And her signs of the Zodiac.

Remember when you used to go to a classmate's birthday party and Mom would hand out lists with things like "a red paperclip" and "an oak leaf," and then you'd break in your new Reeboks tearing around the streets and pestering the elderly neighbors so your team could make it back to homebase first with your collection? Well it seems the ever-growing community of Flickr users have found a way to recreate that game...

In what could be the least newsworthy post of the day, DCist has learned from its frontline correspondents that what was once a simmering rivalry between two blogs has exploded into full fledged blog war.

D.C. Public Schools start classes bright and early Monday, August 29, and the grounds (not to mention the interiors) of many District schools are in sorry shape. It's time to do a little weeding, painting, mulching and pruning. Schools, parents and community groups are joining forces and co-sponsoring a beautification day this Saturday, August 27, and asking for your help. Our area schools -- especially in Ward One -- need a little TLC to kick...

Love or hate the idea of a new ballpark in Southeast, the design process is moving full steam ahead. Today's Post featured stadium architect Joseph Spear of HOK Sport, outlining his vision and sketches for the stadium. Spear's plan calls for a V-shaped facade, with one face constructed of stone and glass, and the other a steel and glass facade. The ballpark incorporates a view of the Anacostia, pays homage to D.C.'s monumental core, and...

It is a sad morning for news professionals and news junkies here in the District, as it was reported late last night that ABC "World News Tonight" anchor Peter Jennings has died after a struggle with lung cancer. "Peter has been our colleague, our friend, and our leader in so many ways," ABC News President David Westin said in a statement. "None of us will be the same without him."

The Fort Reno show starts at 7:15 p.m.; you can check out some French Toast songs here. >> The DC Hip Hop Theater Festival, a project of the DC Commission on the Arts, features national and international artists and goes on all...

End of the year picks, pans, and best of lists are starting to leak out and soon will be flooding that dead air between Christmas and the New Year. The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association got a head start and just released their "Best Of" list for 2004. Surprisingly, Michel Gondry's surreal "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" claimed top honors as Best Film. Gondry also won for Best Director. The DC critics collective...
