If you're a D.C. voter like me, you might have left the booth today feeling a little ... powerless. Maybe you want to do something more direct to help your community than just voting for a guy who's virtually claimed the job already (not that you shouldn't go vote!). Flickr user DottieboBottie did, in a couple ways. After she took this very simple but poignant shot on H and 13th Streets to share with others, she called the Hypothermia Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 to make sure someone checks on these folks as winter comes barreling upon the city, and hopes that she can convince others to do the same. Photography is for more than just making a pretty picture sometimes. The EXIF data is here.

We don't recommend risking life and limb crouching in the middle of the Key Bridge for a great road shot, but since Flickr user AlbinoFlea already did it, we'll celebrate his continued existence by putting him up in Photo of the Day. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: October 31, 2006
Flickr user billadler took this pristine photograph near a playground on Van Ness Street, NW. According to his description, this is inside fenced off federal land, and all you can see from the street is this unusual hydrant. Anyone have an idea what's going on over there? The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: October 30, 2006
Last week provided some great opportunities for moody weather shots with the earth-moving winds and fantastic cloud formations. Flickr user halliew pulled out a nice one from a vineyard in Comus, Maryland. Anyone else feel the need to start seeking underground shelter? The EXIF data is here. We haven't put up a reminder in awhile, but please try to only add 2-3 photos a day to the DCist Flickr pool. While we're so pleased...

If we were to commission our own D.C. photo book, Flickr user epmd would be high on the list for that contract. Anyone who can make Adams Morgan look downright serene is harboring some powerful talent, and makes us wish this quietly lit scene occassionally extended down to the 18th Street bars. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: October 20, 2006
Flickr user Grundlepuck used an abandoned building on 9th Street to get this though-a-window view of the Immaculate Conception church. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: October 18, 2006
Apologies to maxedaperture, whose photo we were having some technical problems with yesterday. It's viewable now, so please click over to check it out. Today we're inspired to bring you something similar, but with that crisp fall feeling that made us break the jackets out of storage last week. Flickr user static-photo found this foliage way out in Bath, Virginia. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: October 13, 2006
We tend to stray away from monument photos here since they get a little redundant, but every once in awhile it's nice to see a pitch perfect shot of a monument the way you know the architect wanted it to be seen. Flickr user AlbinoFlea takes advantage of the reflection on the water, barreling your vision straight up the obelisk and on up to that lovely sky. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: September 27, 2006
The city's drinking water may not be so good for our insides, but at least we can try to enjoy the sights, especially when Flickr user Grundlepuck takes photographs like this one, at the McMillan Reservoir. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: September 20, 2006
If the other images in DCMatt's photostream are any indication, this probably isn't a candid, but it's sweet nonetheless. These two lovebirds are enjoying the quickly passing last days of summer the way we all should: outside, relaxing in the sun. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: September 13, 2006
I'm not entirely convinced this isn't a painting. This amazing shot of a water lily at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens was taken by Flickr user maxedaperture with a Canon EOS 20D. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: September 12, 2006
Are you ready for some football? I hope these tough guys weren't using the Redskins as role models last night, lest their dreams of championship games be dashed like so many wide last-minute field goals. Flickr user michael starghill caught these Coolidge High School players putting on their game faces for the second half. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: September 8, 2006
Well if this isn't a photo of the day, I don't know what is. Flickr user maxedaperture took this macro shot with perfect composition and lighting, turning an ordinary flower into some kind of awesome alien fractal. The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: August 28, 2006
The photo of this enormous pile of ripe and sliced up peaches nectarines by Flickr user andertho makes me want to run outside the office and have a picnic in the park. Is your mouth watering? The EXIF data is here.
Photo of the Day: August 22, 2006
While searching the DCist photos the past few days, I admit scrolling past this one a number of times without really seeing it. When I finally stopped and took a good look, I realized Flickr user AlbinoFlea has a pretty fantastic photograph here. The clean, simple lines and slight gradients of the same color make for a striking image that most of us would have just walked right by. The EXIF data is here.

It's hard to resist the lure of sunny days with cloud-filled skies, something I'm sure anyone with summer hours on Fridays can attest to. These conditions also tend to look picturesque when reflected off the side of a building. Thus today's photo, taken by Flickr user krwaltondc of Techworld Plaza, on 8th and K in NW. This shot was taken on a Sony DSC-W1. The EXIF data can be found here.

Remember autumn? That blessed season with no sweating-through-your-shirt humidity, fewer lightning storms that knock out your cable, and a resurgence of all the pretty colors you missed since the tulips stopped blooming in May? Just barely, right? Flickr user katmere reminds us with this gorgeous photo from last November. The EXIF data is here....

Thirsty? Flickr user Bsivad shows us Coke's current product line up in today's edition of Photo of Day. This shot was taken on a Nikon D100. The EXIF data can be found here. This weekend's warm weather must have agreed with all the local Flickr photogs, as the DCist tag pool was filled with great shots when I checked it earlier today. Check out The Wizard of Oz at Wolftrap, cyclists at RFK and...

It's still hot out. Here's a picture from the archives of a Bible on a fire hydrant. This shot was taken by Flickr user mirrorball on a Noritsu Koki QSS-32_33. The EXIF data can be found here.
Photo of the Day: August 02, 2006
In case you hadn't heard, it's really hot out today. This photo is from the archives, taken by Flickr user Burnt Pixel back in May of 2005. The EXIF data can be found here.

It looks like the larger than life Presidents are a hit with the fans at the "new and improved" RFK. Is anyone keeping a tally of the race results? DC Charles doubts Thomas Jefferson's chances. This shot was taken by Flickr user randomduck on a Canon PowerShot S1 IS. The EXIF data can be found here. We'd also like to take the time to remind everyone that we only want your best work in...
Photo of the Day: July 24, 2006
I could have picked any number of photos from Flickr user grundlepuck for today's Photo of the Day entry, but when in doubt, go with the long exposure. This shot was taken on a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. The EXIF data can be found here.
Photo of the Day: July 10, 2006
Coming to us straight out of Mt. Pleasant is today's photo, taken by Flickr user FloydSlip. Cool pattern, no? This photo was taken on a Canon EOS 20D. The EXIF data can be found here.
Photo of the Day: July 06, 2006
It's all panda, all the time at DCist today. Like we needed another excuse to remind you about tonight's happy hour/birthday party, right? This photo was taken on a Panasonic DMC-FZ5 by Flickr user adrummer_boy. The EXIF data can be found here.

Unlike Jules from Pulp Fiction, I can dig on swine. Especially swine of the gargoyle variety. Flickr user a nameless yeast provides us with today's photo, which, if the tags are any indication, was taken at the National Cathedral. This photo was taken with a Nikon D70s. The EXIF data can be found here.
Photo of the Day: June 19, 2006
If there's a photo of a statue on DCist, then it must be time for Photo of the Day. And it is! This shot of the of Nathanael Greene statue in Stanton Square was taken by Flickr user grundlepuck on a Canon PowerShot G3. The Exif data can be found here. As grundlepuck has showed time and time again, you don't need a digital SLR to take great photos. G3's go for as little as $250 if you're in the market for a new camera. I have the newer G6 and can report it takes great shots as well.
Photo of the Day: June 13, 2006
Today's photo comes to us from Flickr user katmere. This shot was taken with a Fujifilm FinePix S7000. The EXIF data can be found here.

For those of you counting at home the DCist tag photo pool on Flickr surpassed 10,000 photos over the weekend. A big "Thank You" is in order to everyone who has submitted photos since we started way back when. Pictured above is photo #9999, The Douglas Development building on the corner of New Jersey and Massachusetts Ave NW, taken by Flickr user grundlepuck. The shot was taken on a Canon PowerShot G3.
