Perhaps the most interesting aspect of The Fake Accents is their ability to make their inherent contradictions seamlessly coexist. One might not expect that the same band who records and listens to their own practice sessions would also write a disclaimer on their first album that most of the songs that they'd written were actually just ripped off of other songs. Their songs are identifiable by both their catchy hooks and their noisy guitar riffs.......

Anyone who has a car and has had to renew their registration knows that one thing apart from death and taxes is an inevitable part of life -- fighting to remove the old registration stickers. So hard is it to pry an old one from a windshield that some drivers sport a number of expired ones alongside their current one, while others just try and find an excuse to change the whole damn windshield instead.......

As our Gothamist friends picked up back in 2005, 28-year-old comedienne Jennifer Dziura is a pretty funny gal. After reading her bio, I quickly realized that I wanted to be her. The Dartmouth philosophy grad is a human smorgasbord, with past stints as a contraceptive tester, naked model for miscellaneous art schools, trapeze assistant, dot-com entrepreneur, and occasional comedy writer for McSweeney's and the Idiot's Guide to Jokes. Every Monday she emcees Williamsburg’s “Spelling Bee"......

Being a pedestrian city, DC has its share of pedestrian accidents, with about 3,000 hit a year. The city has been trying to make sure it's safe to walk, in part by installing 1,300 pedestrian countdown signals and starting a pedestrian safety program. However, some of those countdown signals seem to be malfunctioning. A few months ago, I was walking at 16th and U when the countdown signal seemed to skip from about 15 to......

From our mailbag comes the following from a DCist reader: I thought I'd write about something that happened last night. I took a cab from Adams Morgan to Woodley Park (short hop, but it was 11, and I wanted to be safe) -- I was sending messages on my blackberry, and the cab driver asked me if I saw his cell phone, I looked around under the seat, and didn't, then he asked if I......

It was a great week to be outside, and one happy side effect of all that mixing and mingling was a great collection of quotes flowing into the Overheard inbox. In addition to the usual tourist confusion, we have a few locals who seem to lack the self-awareness gene as well. And that? Makes our cold hearts happy. Let us know what you've overheard at overheardindc (at) gmail (dot) com. Quote of the Week Exiting......

Are you stuck in town this weekend with nothing to do? Have you been negligent in your intake of vitamin D, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron and manganese? Do you like felines? Then DCist has the perfect activity for you this weekend. A Craigslist posting is advertising an oatmeal-eating party of all things. Are you open to eating large amounts of oatmeal without suger or milk? Then I am hosting an oatmeal eating bash at......
