MONDAY: We apparently didn't pay enough attention in history class, because we never knew Alice Roosevelt Longworth was such a bad girl. The daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, Alice married then Speaker of the House Nicholas Longworth and had a child by Sen. William Borah of Idaho. Stacy A. Cordery will be at Politics and Prose with all the juicy details found in her latest book Alice . 7 p.m. TUESDAY: New York Times columnist...
Reader, Meet Author
What Does the Stadium Need?
In just a few months, fans will finally get a glimpse of the new $611 million baseball stadium rising in Southeast. No longer will they simply be looking at an artists rendering -- they'll get to see the new concourse, the stands, the suites and the field for themselves. And today the Post's Marc Fisher poses an interesting question -- beyond the bricks and mortar, what should the team's owners offer inside the stadium? After...
Opinionist: Being Truthful With Washington’s Façades
DCist is excited to welcome back our founding editor, Michael Grass, who comes to us this Sunday with a special Opinionist. One of the most frustrating things about living in Washington, D.C., for me is walking along Eye Street up and around the corner from the International Monetary Fund. Between 20th and 21st streets NW sits Kinkead’s, one of the city’s long-standing respected restaurants. Kinkead’s sits in the house where my late grandfather and my...
Rep. Pombo: The District's Real Estate Agent
Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Ca.) is just one of those guys you wish you just wouldn't hear from anymore.
Roosevelt Island Park to be Sold?
Friday in Washington is blithely referred to as "Take Out The Trash Day," as it's the traditional day of the week when our government issues press releases and concludes business in matters that they'd prefer didn't get a whole lot of media attention. Today, Representative Richard Pombo (R-CA), Chairman of the House Resources Committee, included a piece of garbage especially for the District. In the Draft Reconciliation Bill, published today, Pombo and his panel have,...
Daily Kossuth
That's exactly what you'll see if you frequently come upon Massachusetts Avenue and 20th Street NW. Otherwise, the word "Kossuth," which we read somewhere was pronounced "co-shoot," might not be a familiar one. The word refers to Lajos Kossuth, one of several Eastern European champions of liberty and democracy celebrated within a few city blocks northwest of Dupont Circle, and arguably the most quarrelsome and conflicted of them all....
Morning Roundup: Black Squirrels and Oysters Edition
Good morning Washington. This photo by FurCafe, posted in DCist Photos via Flickr, was taken in Court House across the street from Summer's (we think, correct us if we're wrong). The weather today, according to Capital Weather, will see showers maybe moving in by evening. (And be sure to check out all the buzz about two certain meteorologists: AccuWeather's Joe Bastardi is "not as smart as he thinks" and Joe Witte of WJLA is apparently...
Morning Roundup: It's Getting Hot Edition
Good morning, Washington. Please ignore the still budding trees -- summer is here. Today, highs will head into the 80s and Wednesday, it'll approach 90, according to a number of forecasts. Capital Weather notes that one thing will be missing: significant humidity. Sounds like perfect weather for an excursion to Theodore Roosevelt Island, where this photo, taken by Matt Billings and posted in DCist Photos via Flickr, was shot from.
Vox Populi: 'Best Bets' Are In
The results are in: The Post's 2004 Best Bets Readers' Choice Awards were decided today. And the winners are ... (drumroll, please): Pretty much all the same places that won last year! But that's OK -- by and large, DCist approves of the victors (though we'll never understand why Starbucks consistently comes in the top three of Best Coffee Shop; same with Borders for Best Bookstore. Isn't this supposed to be about D.C.'s best local and non-totally-massive-and-impersonal establishments?).
