FRIDAY: >> It’s been over six years since he last had a properly released album, but crooner Bilal (left) has still managed to catch people’s attention with some of his latest material. Too bad it was illegally leaked and now his label is threatening never to let the refined product see the light of day. Regardless, his Black Cat performance should be noteworthy. 9 p.m., $22. >> We’ve told you about Deleted Scenes many times...

Everybody's favorite Portland-based literary music makers, The Decemberists, have had to cancel their Long And Short Of It tour, just two dates in. One of the band members has been ill, and as it turns out, hadn't gotten as well as they'd hoped in time to tour. That includes the expansive four-night residency they'd scheduled at the 9:30 Club for this weekend. If you'd already bought tickets, you can get a refund at your...

It's been almost two years since VHS or Beta brought their explosive electronic rock to a non-DJ show in D.C., which is too long for us. On Saturday the Kentuckians came to the Rock and Roll Hotel, bringing buzz band Walter Meego and local faves The Vita Ruins. Unfortunately we missed The Vita Ruins' opening set, but judging by our past experience, the atmospheric Three Stars and Unbuckled alums put on a good show. Walter...

>> Send off Three Starsand Unbuckled vets The Vita Ruins as they set off on a mini east coast tour tonight at Iota, with New York's Jaguar Club and Faster Faster Harder Harder. 8:30 p.m., $10

MONDAY >> The City Veins are a strong local outfit that's been making their debut around town over the course of the past few months. They just formed in March and are already more mature and ready to bring the rock than a lot of bands with a lot more stage time. And hey, they have a blog! See what you're missing tonight at Solly's Tavern on U Street. 10 p.m. >> Do you...

FRIDAY: >> Even though Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is an obvious choice for the movie-going crowd this weekend, the Avalon Theatre -- just north of the Potter madness at the Uptown -- is showing Talk to Me, the new biopic on the life of famed Washington, D.C., talk-show host and activist Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene Jr. 5:50 and 8:30 p.m. >> Unbuckled alumni The Vita Ruins celebrate the release of their...

You've read about The Vita Ruins on DCist before. You may have even seen them perform at our 4th Unbuckled concert. When all that buzz was going on about the band, they'd only had a few (literally -- Unbuckled was their third show) performances under their belt. Since then they've built up a reputation that's allowed them quite a bit of luck in booking shows and getting people talking. But the Virginia natives are...

> > If we know you, the DCist reader, you are no doubt feverishly caught up in DC's celebration of the life and works of William Shakespeare. Feel like delving deeper? Get on board with Wordfest's Shakespeare Reading Group at Chapters one week from today at 6pm, and get a guided tour of Richard III from University of Connecticut Professor Emeritus Arnold Orza. If you ask us, Richard got mad swift-boated by the Bard, but,...

FRIDAY: >> The EU Film Showcase kicked off at the AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center last weekend, and we'll have a little more about it for you this weekend. In the meantime film buffs should consider checking out Bergman Island, a documentary by another Swedish filmmaker, Marie Nyeröd, that visits legendary director Ingmar Bergman at his home on the island of Fårö. Now 88 years old, this is no doubt the final document of...

As we hoped, last night's Unbuckled, starring Middle Distance Runner and the Vita Ruins, was a hell of a show. The Vita Ruins kicked things off with an atmospheric set to a packed DC9 crowd. It's one of the first handful of shows the band's performed, and it went off without a hitch. Middle Distance Runner capped off the evening with an incredibly impressive show -- one that made a lot of fans out of a lot of bloggers. Attractive bloggers. They were tight, energetic, charismatic, and quite simply, they had me at the clap along.

Good morning, Washington. Thanks to everyone who came out to Unbuckled last night — we had a great time and hope that you did, too. Particular thanks to Middle Distance Runner, The Vita Ruins and BlueState, all of whom provided great music throughout the night. We hate to ask anything more of you, but if anyone's got photos that are destined for Flickr, do us a favor and tag them as unbuckled4. Williams Pledges Support For Fenty's Transition: Yesterday we discussed Adrian Fenty's transition plans. Today the Post reports that he'll have the current mayor's support. Anthony Williams is pledging to assist in the presumptive mayor-elect's transition into office, in an effort to avoid the difficulties that plagued the early days of the Williams administration as it took the reins from Marion Barry. Ehrlich & O'Malley Square Off: Yesterday saw the first debate between the candidates vying for Maryland's governorship. As WTOP reports, sitting Governor Robert Ehrlich and Democratic challenger Martin O'Malley faced one another Thursday in a debate that frequently revolved around the state's seemingly neverending utility woes. The prices may have stabilized, but the blame is still fresh! The one thing that the candidates could agree on? Not to eschew negative campaigning. Montgomery County Voting Problems Explained: As you read the Post's interview with Paul Valette, you can't help but start to like the guy. Valette is stepping up to take responsibility for the election problems that plagued the county earlier this week — apparently the problem rested with electronic voting machine keycards that were meant to be distributed to election officials, but weren't. The mistake was discovered about 45 minutes before polls were supposed to open. After experiencing a morning like that, it seems to us like Valette's probably suffered enough. Times Technical Trouble?: We probably shouldn't be the ones to cast stones when it comes to server woes. But, um, this isn't right, is it? Briefly Noted: Maryland utility commissioners reinstated... D.C. EMS management questioned by new report... Flare gun fired in front of Supreme Court... More area priests in trouble... Examiner really, really, really thinks you should reconsider eating that spinach... This Day In DCist: A year ago today we were sticking up for Dremo's, reviewing CityZen and getting ready for our first birthday party.

By now, you and your entire network of friends, acquaintances and enemies have made plans to meet at DC9 tonight to take in the glory that will be Unbuckled 4: DCist's Official 2nd Anniversary party. Right? Well, just in case you haven't been sold by our lineup alone (and don't forget to check out our reviews of Middle Distance Runner and The Vita Ruins), let us give you 5 more reasons that Unbuckled is the...

In August, DCist reviewed Thanks For Your Concern (but we're okay), the latest offering from The Vita Ruins. Now it's September and the band's wormed its way into our iPods, our hearts, and our stage at Unbuckled 4. Here's a second look at our review of the band's EP. See the real thing tomorrow night at DC9 as the band takes the stage with Middle Distance Runner.

Tomorrow night we continue our local music showcase with the fourth installment of Unbuckled, this time featuring Middle Distance Runner, The Vita Ruins, and the DJs from Bluestate. We're also going to have a spirited debate between mayoral contenders Adrian Fenty and Linda Cropp...oh, that's right, the primary is over. Maybe Sommer and I will just scream at each other on pros and cons of inclusionary zoning and community policing strategies. The show will be at DC9 and start around 9 p.m., and just $8 gets you in the door.

We can hardly believe it's been two whole years since DCist first began. Seems like it was just yesterday that Big Media Mike Grass was tantilizing us all with the possibility of Jessica Cutler's bare breast in honor of our official launch. Sigh. The innocence of youth -- those were indeed the days. So, what have we learned in our two years of life? To begin with, we've finally been potty trained, and now know...

A couple weeks ago, DCist was outside the 9:30 Club when a couple fellas promoting their EP Thanks For Your Concern (but we're okay) handed us a copy. The band is The Vita Ruins and we were expecting to hear more Pitchfork rock, an upstart college band, maybe even a rough EP by a new rock group recorded on affordable gear in their practice space. But we definitely weren't expecting to hear THIS. And we aren't the only ones that have taken notice either, as word of this band is quickly spreading through the local music community and across the internet. The Vita Ruins are about to break and you better take a listen.
