Person Found Dead After Fall From Building Near Thomas Circle

Authorities say that a person was found dead after falling from a building two blocks east of Thomas Circle this morning. D.C. Fire and EMS crews responded to the scene at 1200 M Street NW around 8 a.m. today and found a person -- who they are labeling as "possibly a window washer" -- who had suffered traumatic injuries consistent with those which would occur from a "fall or jump from a ten story building." The person was dead when the crews arrived. The 1200 block of M Street NW is still closed off due to the investigation. more ›

Suspicious Package Detouring Traffic Near Thomas Circle

Yet another traffic headache to add to a long list of them over the last 12 hours: streets around Thomas Circle have been closed to traffic due to a suspicious package located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and 14th Street NW. Both north-south and east-west traffic is affected, including the Woodley Park-McPherson Square Circulator route, which is detouring to 13th Street. DCist senior editor Kyle Gustafson tells us that the office building he is currently in, located on the Circle, has been locked down as a result of the investigation. more ›

Ask DCist: What Happened at Thomas Circle This Morning?

We got a couple reports of a huge crowd of people gathered around Thomas Circle this morning, but by the time we got down there, no such crowd could be seen. A helpful security guard at 1120 Vermont Ave. NW filled us in that there was a fire drill in the large office building shortly after the work day began, so that probably explains the gathering. No big deal, in other words. more ›

No More Hookers at the Washington Plaza Hotel?

No More Hookers at the Washington Plaza Hotel?

Third District Police Commander Larry McCoy sent out the following announcement of arrests related to a prostitution ring working out of the Washington Plaza Hotel in Thomas Circle.

The Prostitution Enforcement Unit (PEU), under the direction of Insp. Brian Bray, conducted a hotel operation at the Washington Plaza Hotel targeting adult and juvenile prostitutes and johns. The operation took place at # 10 Thomas Cir. NW. As a result of the operation 11 individuals were arrested. There were no other incidents that occurred during the operation.
The Thomas Circle hotel is a well-known downtown spot to pick up prostitutes -- some of you may remember Wizards forward Andray Blatche was arrested for solicitation there in August. Assistant Chief Diane Groomes followed up on McCoy's report to say that the hotel tipped off police to the illegal activity happening there. Could these arrests spell the beginning of the end of Thomas Circle serving as a hotbed for hookers? more ›

In news that will make hard luck single guys everywhere feel better about themselves, Wizards forward Andray Blatche was arrested yesterday for soliciting sex from an undercover police officer in Thomas Circle. Crime Doesn't Pay, But Neither Does the Alternative

Former Editor-in-Chief Ryan Avent writes a weekly column about neighborhood and development issues. I'll admit, it isn’t easy for me to talk about crime in the District with many of my friends, particularly those who live in the suburbs or outside the metro area entirely. In the minds of those who don’t often visit, Washington is still the murder capital of the United States, still caught in crack wars, still a place into which one... more ›

Photo of the Day: February 5, 2007

While most of us were inside this weekend trying to keep warm by regularly jumping up and down from the couch and shouting at the television, someone was out in Thomas Circle freezing his guerilla artist's ass right off. Flickr user JamesCalder took this nice purple-packing-tape-meets-ton-of-bronze photo of the makeshift merry-go-round. EXIF.

Giving As Good As You Get

Giving As Good As You Get

Santa's workshop has come a long way in the last 40 years. In the most accurate historical documentary available on the subject, as recently as the mid-60s, the elves were equipped with only the skills necessary to turn out dolls, sleds, toy cars and trains, and other fairly rudimentary wood and fabric-based toys. Somewhere along the line, the Kringles must have signed up the little people for some intensive training, because the electronics coming... more ›

It's just a trifle, but we're sure you'll let us know what you think in the comments. more ›
