- Tiger Wins AT&T National: Although an incredibly strong round by Hunter Mahan -- an eight-under 62, tying the course record that had been set by third-place finisher Anthony Kim on Thursday -- held the end result temporarily in question at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, there just wasn't any way that Tiger Woods was going to lose the tournament that bears his name. A picture-perfect iron shot on the 18th wrapped up the tournament for Woods, whose third win of the season nets him a million bucks (which he's funneling into his foundation) and a shiny silver replica of the Capitol. Here's your final scoreboard.
- Nationals 5, Braves 3: The Nationals closed out their Independence Weekend with a win, thanks to the efforts of newly-acquired center fielder Nyjer Morgan and starter Scott Olsen. Morgan had a fantastic overall game: three hits, two doubles, a run scored and one batted in, speed to burn, and two great defensive plays: a catch top of the sixth which saved extra bases and an aggressive dive and throw which nailed Martin Prado at second in the seventh. Olsen (2-4) missed pitching his first big league complete game by one out, scattering eight hits. Olsen even went two-for-three at the dish with a perfect sacrifice bunt and a RBI to boot. The home team was in charge all afternoon, and had one of their better defensive efforts this year. Of course, the Nats made it interesting -- the Braves sent seven batters come to the plate in the ninth, and had the go-ahead run at the plate, but Mike MacDougal finally coaxed Brian McCann to groundout, earning his fifth save of the season. The Nats now head off on a long road trip, stopping in Denver and Houston before the All-Star break.
- Sol 1, Freedom 0: Elsewhere in Montgomery County, the Freedom conceded a late strike from Brazilian master Marta and fell at the hands of WPS-best Los Angeles in a tightly contested game at the Soccerplex in Germantown.

Tiger Woods to Speak at Inaugural Concert Sunday
A short note on Tiger Woods's web site this afternoon announced that the world's best golfer accepted an invitation to speak in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, as part of the "We Are One" inaugural concert. His willingness to speak comes as a surprise, considering Woods rarely, if ever, speaks up on politics. Throughout his career, he has preferred to play the Michael Jordan-esque, advertising friendly apolitical game. "I am honored that I was invited to this historic event and look forward to participating in Sunday's festivities," Woods said. Who knows, maybe he'll have a duet with Beyonce.
Tiger Woods Bringing Money, Golf, Traffic to Town
Drivers in Montgomery County, beware! The AT&T National golf tournament, hosted by the sport's superstar player, Tiger Woods, began today at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda. The tournament should to make your drive home today, and the rest of this week, hideous beyond reason. Of course, the event being here isn't all, or even mostly, bad news. For starters, D.C. was in danger of not having its own golf tournament at all. For 20 years...
Morning Roundup: File Your Taxes Soon Edition
Yesterday's snow storm didn't add up to much as expected, but some of the melted snow on the ground froze overnight, causing a number of suburban school districts to alter their schedules today. Lucky bastards. In the end, only 1.3 inches of snow fell at Reagan National Airport, and with sunny days today and tomorrow with highs in 40s, most of that will likely disappear in short order. Better luck next year, snowpocalypse. Jail Time...
Mr. Woods Goes To Washington
We mentioned it in the morning roundup, but it's worth celebrating this news with a post of its own: D.C. is getting a golf tournament. And not just any golf tournament! No, as the Post reports, we've somehow lucked into hosting a new PGA Tour event put on by the Tiger Woods Foundation. The Post sports folks are beside themselves — both Boswell and Wilbon have columns today rhapsodizing about the new event. We can't...
Morning Roundup: Villainous Ovine Violence Edition
Sad news, Washington. Fox 5 brings us a heartbreaking story from a Maryland farm. Apparently someone broke into a barn in Yellow Springs, Md. and cut off a sheep's head. As Shawn Yancy lamented, this left "an adorable lamb... motherless". Just think! What kind of monster would harm a helpless farm animal? Fortunately, Brian Bolter was on the case, outlining the possibilities: it seems to either be a "sick joke" or — far more likely...
DCist Interview: Djakarta
Djakarta is the artist behind the “Niggaz4Life” pieces, currently on display as part of the E2: Carving a Path exhibition, previously mentioned on DCist. Her work derives its title from NWA’s classic rap album and song “Niggaz4Life,” released in 1991. Djakarta’s video work is a montage of film clips from popular Hollywood films that portray black people singing, dancing, and mugging for the camera with the exhibit’s namesake song as a soundtrack. Her two-dimensional works are imitations of the classic military recruitment poster, featuring prominent celebrities Vin Diesel, Mariah Carey, and Tiger Woods as central figures. The posters are samples from a city-wide poster campaign, wherein posters were placed on telephone poles, newspaper boxes, walls and even inside newspapers. We caught up with Djakarta recently to talk about her artwork and the social issues that inspired it.
What is the intention behind the posters and postcards?
These are like Army recruitment posters, but inverting the message so that instead of one person pointing at the masses and saying “I Want You,” it’s the masses of black people saying “We Want You,” so they’re like wanted posters. It’s easy to identify the celebrities, and I wanted to catch people’s attention and make them ask questions. I like the juxtaposition of these clean-cut mulatto celebrities who don’t really associate themselves with being black have “Niggaz4Life” stamped on their forehead or stamped across their chest in a poster that say “We Want You.”
And hopefully when people see “Niggaz4Life” they’ll go “whoa.” They won’t think Mariah Carey has a new CD out. They know that’s definitely something she’s not going to attach to herself to, and the same with Vin Diesel and definitely not Tiger Woods, so hopefully it just causes people to think a little bit more.
