Anacostia Streetcar Track Work Causing New Traffic Pattern

Just as work to lay down tracks for the H Street NE streetcar line disrupted traffic in August, the District of Columbia Department of Transportation is warning drivers that the ongoing installation of streetcar tracks for the Anacostia Line will change traffic patterns at the intersection of South Capitol Street and Firth Sterling Avenue for the next couple of weeks.

Metro Announces April Weekend Track Work Schedule

Metro's latest weekend track work schedule, which covers the month of April, is now up on their web site. What sorts of delay-tastic shenanigans are in store for us in the coming month? We've posted the basics below.

Major Delays on the Green/Yellow Metro Lines This Weekend

We warned you about this at the beginning of the month, but it's a good time to remind you that the Green and Yellow lines are going to be a big mess this weekend thanks to switch replacement work at the Mount Vernon Sq-7th St Convention Center station. Starting tonight at 10 p.m. and lasting through Sunday, March 15 at midnight, riders should expect 30-minute delays while trains single track between the Convention Center and the U Street/African-Amer Civil War Memorial/Cardozo station. In addition, Yellow Line trains will not go all the way to Fort Totten during the entire weekend, meaning old-school Green line off-peak wait times will be in effect along the entire upper corridor of the line. Yellow Line trains will only travel between the Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center stations this weekend.

March Metro Track Maintenance Schedule

Metro released its March track maintenance schedule earlier this week, with some big delays to take note of this coming weekend and beyond.

A friendly reminder that the Pentagon Metro station is closing, along with scheduled maintenance on the Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac River, for the entire three-day weekend starting tonight at 10 p.m. Read our post breaking down how this will work, but note one addition: Metro will now be providing free shuttle bus service every 10 minutes between the Pentagon City, Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery and Rosslyn stations. Previously, shuttle buses had only been planned between Pentagon City, Pentagon and L’Enfant Plaza. Anyone with Valentine's Day plans that will take them between Virginia and the District should note the altered schedule, as should anyone who had been planning to go to the Pentagon City Mall for Presidents' Day sales on Monday.

Reminder: Pentagon Metro Station to Close This Weekend

Metro put out a more detailed press release late yesterday explaining exactly how the closure of the Pentagon Metro Station will work this weekend. You'll recall that the station will be totally shuttered from 10 p.m. on Friday, February 13, to midnight on Monday, February 16 while rail switches, fasteners and stud bolts are replaced. In addition to the closure, the Yellow Line bridge over the Potomac River will receive regular maintenance this weekend, thus making traveling on the Yellow line to anywhere in Virginia over the holiday weekend a real chore.

Due to security surrounding the dedication of the new Pentagon Memorial on Thursday morning, all Metrobus service that would usually run through the Pentagon Transit Center will be rerouted to Pentagon City. The Center services a good number of bus routes, so if your commute takes you through Northern Virginia on a bus, we'd recommend looking in to some alternate plans on Thursday. Metrorail service at and through the Pentagon station will not be affected.

Metro maintenance can be disruptive. It's not a secret - weekend work is something that can really throw a wrench into your plans. You've often commented wondering why Metro has to take weekends, sometimes many in a row, to fix a track switch. Well in case you missed the Post's awesome Commuter graphic this week, make sure to check it out to get a feel for how much labor and intricate planning actually goes into something as "simple" as switch work.

It was nice while it lasted. After four weekends in a row of zero track work delays, WMATA is letting everyone know that regular weekend Metro track work is back. The good news is that these delays don't look too bad. Details below.
