It appears as if attendance at Washington Redskins training camp has declined measurably so far this summer. (You know things are bad when Dan Snyder starts offering free admission.)
Attendance at Hot, Boring Event Not Great
The Washington Haynesworths Open Training Camp
Football's here! By which, I mean lots of rain and rapid-fire updates about whether or not a disgruntled defensive lineman -- who's still making truckloads of cash -- was in shape to complete a physical examination which may or may not have just been a subtle way for his new head coach to punish him for holding out on offseason workouts are here. Whoooooo! I'm counting down the minutes until the meaningless preseason starts, aren't you?
Redskins To Hold 15 Open Training Camp Practices This Year
New head coach Mike Shanahan obviously wants to break down the secretive wall that his predecessors had erected around Redskins Park: according to this report, the new boss will welcome fans to a whopping 15 practice sessions during this summer's training camp in Ashburn, Virginia. Camp opens on July 29, and ends on August 19. The transparency is a reversal in policy from previous Redskins coaches, who limited the public's access to training camp (last year, the public was only invited to eight practices); though, considering the Redskins' record over the last couple of years, it's easy to understand why any coach would want to keep the public blissfully unaware of how bad the team actually was for as long as possible.
Caps Briefing: Training Day
There was no lack of big names on the ice for the start of Capitals training camp Sunday, but everyone was talking about the one guy who wasn't skating -- veteran center Tomas Fleischmann, who spent all last season with the Capitals after yo-yoing on and off their roster for the previous three. Fleishmann was diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg (a deep vein thrombosis) this summer, and is out of contact workouts until the first week of the regular season.
Redskins Open Training Camp Today
Get the recliner ready, start clearing off the Sunday schedule, and make sure that your refrigerator is prepared to hold an appropriate amount of beer: football is officially on the horizon, with today's opening of Redskins training camp. Hot topics from the first morning of camp include head coach Jim Zorn's new dress policy, what color the practice uniforms are, how many pounds offensive lineman Mike Williams lost over the summer (best guess: around 100), and Clinton Portis' new hair color. Fascinating! If you're in desperate need of blanket, up-to-the-minute coverage of the circus -- hey, Williams may have just lost another pound during a workout! -- we recommend checking out local sports blogging mecca Mr. Irrelevant, where they're embracing technology which enables the entirety of Redskins nation to immediately prognosticate how many more seasons Portis can run the ball 325 or more times without his legs falling off.
