The Gold Cup's quickly approaching, folks. OK, OK, that one too, but also the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the continent's international soccer championship (it does seem remarkable, however, that the Virginia Gold Cup web site gets more hits than a bi-annual soccer tournament that crowns the champion of all of North and Central America and the Caribbean). Lucky for us, Washington has been named one of the 13 host cities in this year's event. Even luckier, we're one of three cities that will host one of team USA's first round games: they'll take on Honduras on Wednesday, July 8 at RFK. The game is part of a double-header starting at 7 p.m., with Haiti and Grenada kicking things off. What's more, Honduras is the last team in the region to beat the U.S. at home, when they pulled a 3-2 upset at RFK in 2001. Though this is one of three major competitions for the Americans this year—they'll play in the FIFA Confederations Cup in late June in addition to their ongoing World Cup qualifying slate—they've won the tournament 3 out of the last 4 times, and coach Bob Bradley's men will be looking to win their third straight. The game should also provide a great chance for RFK to flex its pro-Yank muscles (the stadium will also host the integral World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica on October 14) after being left out of hosting duties for one World Cup cycle. In the Internet age, far fewer people still regularly turn to a paper version of the yellow pages, but that doesn't mean several companies aren't still delivering phone books to homes and businesses in Washington every year. We spotted about 5-6 brand new Yellow Books on the sidewalk on 9th Street NW in Shaw (around the corner from DCist HQ) over the weekend, having been delivered to what are clearly boarded up and abandoned buildings (a few of which are those same controversial Shiloh Baptist properties). Boo hoo. It turns out Lonny Baxter, the Maryland alum and NBA journeyman who you may remember decided to bust a few caps from his Glock within shouting distance of the White House last week, did so because he was upset that he'd have to spend the next basketball season playing in Italy, far away from friends and family. At least that's what local blogger The Upsate Life quoted from a WJZ.com report on the incident. However, the story he links to has apparently been updated with the cited passages removed. No matter Baxter's motivation, this much is clear: Baxter plead guilty to charges and will spend the next 53 days behind bars, seriously jeopardizing his basketball career in the process.

Something weird's going on, D.C. Yesterday a 38 year-old Catholic nun identified as Sister Liann was kidnapped from behind Our Lady Queen of Peace Convent in Southeast. She was then driven about two miles away and released unharmed. Police are looking for the suspects, a man and a woman, but no one seems to have any hunches as to what the assailants' motives might have been. As a neighbor interviewed by the Post asked, "Who would abduct a nun — an idiot?"

When you ask someone about restaurant service in D.C., you'll get endless opinions. Some will claim that service in D.C. is uniformly abysmal. Others will point to phenomenal experiences -- but at a price. Recently, two area favorites have been at the center of service-related discussions: Cleveland Park's Palena, where local Chowhounds have complained of very slow service, and Arlington's Ray's the Steaks, which has policies that at least one local food fan thinks are "suicidal" (apparently much to Chef Michael Landrumm's amusement).
