A hazmat investigation at the building that houses the National Postal Museum has shut down several blocks in the immediate area as well as around nearby Union Station. U.S. Capitol police, D.C. police and D.C. Fire/EMS crews are on the scene investigating an unknown suspicious substance found inside a bottle. One employee inside Postal Square, located at the intersection of North Capitol Street and Massachusetts Ave. NE, tells DCist he's been asked to shelter in place -- meaning the building has not been evacuated, but no one is being allowed to leave, either. We'll update when we have more details. MORE: No illnesses have been reported, but the bottle apparently came with a note that raised suspicions. Mass. Several sections of ceiling tile on the 3rd floor of the Cannon House Office Building fell down this morning, injuring a U.S. Capitol Police officer, The Hill is reporting. The ceiling pieces, which The Hill describes as "a few" tiles but The Post says was a 15-foot section, fell at about 10 a.m., sending FEMS responders to the scene. The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The building is over 100 years old, and overdue for major renovations. more ›

You gotta love the Washington Times for splashing this story across the top of their local coverage today: "EXCLUSIVE: Capitol Police probe officers' Facebook pages" reads the headline, with the subhead, "Complaint cites degradation of women, hedonism." Apparently a couple of officers are "members" of a public group on Facebook called the "Make-it-Rain Foundation for Underprivileged Hoes," which we gather means these guys want it to be known that they are fans of going to strip clubs. Talk about a snoozefest. But wait, there's more!

One of the three men also listed himself as a member of the "He-Man Woman Hater's Club" and founded a Facebook group called "Passed Out in Trashcans" - a three-member group geared toward "anyone else that has woken up from a long night of drinking to find themselves in the trashcan."

Did you know that there was a Library of Congress Police Force? Neither did we, but turns out they won't actually exist for much longer anyway. The Post says a merger between the LOC force and the U.S. Capitol Police has finally been approved after years of trying to hammer out an agreement between the two law enforcement agencies. more ›
