How To Save the BB&T Classic

How To Save the BB&T Classic

Last week, Andrew Wiseman and I attended the BB&T Classic at the Verizon Center, a college basketball event that raises funds for the Children's Charities Foundation and is organized by local sports writer John Feinstein. While this year marked the 17th year of the Classic, it may have very well been the weakest-attended since the event started back in 1995. more ›

Leonsis Wants Digital Signs on Verizon Center Exterior

Leonsis Wants Digital Signs on Verizon Center Exterior

Even though it's one of the city's most trafficked commercial areas, people sure can be awfully uppity about sensory additions around the Verizon Center. That said, one can only imagine the uproar that's to come regarding the news that arena owner Ted Leonsis would like to install several new digital exterior displays on the side of the stadium. more ›

D.C. GOP Calls on Council to Auction Off Sports Tickets

For years, members of the D.C. Council have feuded over access to one of two luxury suites they have access to at the Verizon Center. But for the sake of the city's sanity and its bottom line, the D.C. GOP wants those tickets auctioned off. more ›

Beware: D.C. GLEEKs Unarmed and Dangerous

I know the A Capella-based musical acts on FOX's Glee isn't everyone's cup of tea. But if you must assail your ears with its music for a few moments -- apart from appeasing your Glee-obsessed loved one -- try skipping to 3:00 into the video above where you'll see the dreamy Glee cast member Darren Criss being pulled off stage by an overzealous fan at the end of the Thursday night concert. Further details of Criss' traumatizing ordeal were revealed later that night on his Twitter account, "btw I'm lucky I didn't hit my head on the gate in front of this lady. Seriously close call tonight... Like, please don't kill me. I'm nice," he tweeted. more ›

Maryland and Georgetown to Revive Local Rivalry?

Maryland and Georgetown to Revive Local Rivalry?

It's long been a contested issue, since their last regular season meeting nearly 18 years ago at the old USAir Arena: will the Georgetown Hoyas and Maryland Terrapins ever play one another again? An answer to that question might be coming soon, though. According to the Washington Times, the two programs are in talks to renew their college hoops rivalry. more ›

PETA Will Unveil "Giant, Inflatable" Elephant To Protest Circus

PETA Will Unveil "Giant, Inflatable" Elephant To Protest Circus

We realize that many of you are not fans of the elephant march that wound its way through the streets of Washington yesterday. (We're not passing judgment either way -- we just feel an obligation to inform people when a large group of pachyderms begin stomping around Capitol Hill.) But don't you worry: PETA stands ready to strike back. According to one government source we spoke with, PETA had actually asked the D.C. government to shut down yesterday's march, but it was too late. Instead, the animal rights group will "confront circusgoers" with a "giant, inflatable 'elephant'" that "will lead PETA's contingent of nearly 100 protesters" tomorrow morning. more ›

Elephant March Returns This Afternoon

Elephant March Returns This Afternoon

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey touring circus finds its way back to the Verizon Center on Thursday (this year's theme: Barnum's Funundrum), so it's once again time for the annual Elephant Walk. The pachyderm march through the streets of the District will begin this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. -- to make sure you get a chance to gawk at the trunked ones, you can call 1-866-683-3670 or follow @DCElephantWalk on Twitter. (Yes, there's an elephant walk hotline.) more ›

Click Click: Deja Gaga All Over Again

             + 8 more

If it feels like only a few months since we posted images of Lady Gaga fans strutting their stuff outside a sold-out Verizon Center, well that's because it is. The weather may have been nastier last night than it was last September, but that didn't stop the Gaga faithful from dedicating themselves, once again, to duplicating their inscrutable heroine's fashion sense. Some hid themselves under blankets or overcoats as they tried to stay warm standing in line -- but when asked to be photographed, such comforts were quickly cast aside and it was straight into "paws up" pose. more ›

Still Looking For A Posh Lady Gaga Seat?

Still Looking For A Posh Lady Gaga Seat?

Because D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham's got two -- and they can be all yours, if the price is right. Graham, who has been complaining about the way that the Council's tickets to events at the Verizon Center were being doled out by Council Chairman Kwame Brown, put his Council tickets for tonight's Gaga concert up for auction on eBay. more ›

D.C. Council Griping About Tickets...Again

D.C. Council Griping About Tickets...Again

That's right: apparently having exhausted all other important aspects of debate, Tim Craig reports that some D.C. Councilmembers are back to whining that they haven't been getting their tickets to games and events at the Verizon Center, despite reports claiming that there would be "no Ticketgate" this year. After all, if there's anything that this city should be taking care of immediately, it's filling Jim Graham's need for admittance to tomorrow night's Lady Gaga concert. more ›

No, The Ice Doesn't Melt

No, The Ice Doesn't Melt

Have you ever wondered how the Verizon Center transforms from a hockey rink into a basketball court when the Capitals and the Wizards play at home on the same day? TBD's Sara Kenigsberg filmed this awesome behind-the-scenes look at the transformation in action, as crews resurface the ice, take down the glass around the rink, lay down concrete slabs, take out the penalty boxes and boards, retract and install a bunch of seats, and then hammer the maple basketball floor down into place -- all in the span of about three hours. more ›

I Knew Axl Rose, And You, Sir, Are No Axl Rose

I Knew Axl Rose, And You, Sir, Are No Axl Rose

Apparently, tonight's Linkin Park concert at the Verizon Center has been canceled, as "vocalist Chester Bennington is ill and under doctor's orders to refrain from performing." C'mon, Bennington! What you should have done is taken the stage after making the crowd -- who just saw the lead singer of the opening act be severely burned by pyrotechnics -- stand around anxiously for two-and-a-half hours, then aburptly call off the performance mid-set while complaining of a sore throat and threatening to break up the band, causing a massive riot. Rock stars these days, they just don't know how to do it. more ›

Verily, The Future Is Now

Verily, The Future Is Now

Behold, the Bottoms Up Draft Beer Dispensing System -- which is now in place at the Verizon Center, says arena owner Ted Leonsis. The taps, the brainchild of GrinOn Industries, can reportedly allow one person to fill 44 pints of beer in one minute. It involves magnets, or something. more ›

Return of the Gilbert

Return of the Gilbert

Friday night, the Washington Wizards will take on the Orlando Magic. This is one of a handful of games -- along with Celtics, the Heat and the Lakers -- that should sell out the Verizon Center, and bring droves of fans to downtown D.C. bars. But if you're still skeptical and bit hesitant to commit your time and money to a 13-35 (0-25 on the road) team, allow me to give you an addition reason to tune in on Friday: Gilbert Arenas. more ›

John Wall Apparently Drives A Few Blocks To Work

John Wall Apparently Drives A Few Blocks To Work

It's hard not to like John Wall. We've gone on record several times with admiration of the young Wizards star. And despite the fact that his team is currently nearing a record for road futility, Wall has been embraced by the Wizards fanbase, and is one of the few things that is actually able to keep casual fans paying attention when a Wizards game is on. But we think we may have found one group of people who might have reason to hold a grudge with Wall: transit advocates. more ›

John Erskine and His Mustache Are All Out Of Bubblegum

John Erskine and His Mustache Are All Out Of Bubblegum

There are plenty of people out there who believe that fighting in professional ice hockey is something of an unnecessary distraction from the natural ebb and flow of the game. I am not one of those people. That said, it is with pride that I present to you this excellent video of an epic fight between the Caps' brilliantly-mustachioed John Erskine and Atlanta's Eric Boulton during last night's 6-4 Washington win. more ›

So Motivated, It Hurts

So Motivated, It Hurts

Ted Leonsis likes to make lists. Of 101 things. He's had this one for a while, his own personal bucket list. It includes goals like having a net worth of one hundred million dollars after taxes, owning a jet and inventing a board game -- all of which he's accomplished. (But he hasn't been to Alaska yet. Take that, Mr. Overachiever!) more ›

Obama and Gray Meet At Mystics Game

Will John Wall Live In The District?

Dan Steinberg theorizes the Wizards' number one pick just might, after Wall told reporters last week that he wants to live as close to the Verizon Center as possible so he can "come [to the arena] any time I want." Wall, not surprisingly, is a bit of a gym rat -- so he's looking to be able to access the Center's practice court at all hours. (Hey, when searching for housing, it's always important to position yourself close to the amenities you need -- especially those open 24/7.) It's rare for professional athletes who ply their trade for Washington teams -- with a few notable exceptions, like former D.C. United great Ben Olsen -- to actually reside in the District. So, anyone have a room open around 7th and H? more ›
