Starting Thursday, WMATA Closing Four Stations For Weekend

Friday, Veterans Day, is a national holiday. While the day off will certainly be enjoyed by the federal employees in our midst, it's going to be a downright bummer for Metro riders who are depending on the Green Line to get them where they need to go. more ›

Photo Booth: Veterans Day

From time to time, we like to dip into the DCist Flickr pool to illustrate weekends in D.C., fall foliage, the aftermath of extreme weather and the occasional dinosaur Civil War reenactment. Today, in honor of Veterans Day, we thought that we'd share a few moving images from the pool -- some of which mark solemn remembrance, others just to acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have defended the United States, at home and abroad. more ›

Reduced Transit, No Trash Pickup, Free Parking On Veterans Day

Reduced Transit, No Trash Pickup, Free Parking On Veterans Day

Veterans Day -- yet another one of those holidays where many non-federal employees still have to show up to the office -- is tomorrow, and just like Columbus Day, Metro and other local transit agencies will be operating on modified schedules. Metrorail will operate on a Saturday schedule, though the system will open at 5 a.m. and close at midnight, as it would on a weekday. Metrobus has several routes that will not be in operation tomorrow in Maryland and Virginia -- a full list of those routes can be found in a PDF we've embedded after the jump, which outlines Metro's new modified holiday schedule. more ›

Greet a Runner for Wounded Warriors

Arriving in D.C. today is Chris Cuddihy, a multiple marathon runner (and, full disclosure, a friend from my hometown) who set out Saturday to run from New York City to D.C. in order to raise money and awareness for Wounded Warriors, a group that provides services and programs to help the most seriously wounded returning soldiers and their families. more ›

Veterans Day Metro Schedule Changes

Veterans Day is Tuesday, which means federal workers have the day off and transit schedules will be different. WMATA says that Metro will be operating on a modified Saturday schedule tomorrow; that means the system will open at the regular 5 a.m. time, but peak travel times will operate on a non-peak basis. In other words, budget a little extra time on your way in to work tomorrow, since there will be fewer trains running than normal. Other changes for Tuesday include that off-peak fares will be in effect all day and parking at all Metro lots will be free. Metrobus and MetroAccess will operate on a normal, non-holiday schedule. more ›

Morning Roundup: Almost There Edition

Morning Roundup: Almost There Edition

Happy Almost Holidays, Washington. With both Monday and Tuesday counting as a holiday for the federal government this year, most of D.C. is staring down a nice, long holiday break today. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, federal holidays are great for a lot of other reasons besides a day off - you don't have to feed parking meters, for instance. But The Examiner reports that that fact isn't stopping people from shoveling coins into meters on holidays anyway, especially those fancy new multispace meters: last Veterans Day, the city collected nearly $1,500 from multispace meters. DDOT says it is going to put stickers on the new meters along K Street to remind people that they don't have to pay on holidays. more ›

Photo of the Day: November 12, 2007

Flickr user polytropos had a number of excellent photos from down at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial over the weekend. With today being Veterans Day, and just two days shy of the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the Memorial, there was no doubt today's photo would come from that set. It was this black and white shot, not of the wall itself, but of the directory of names, in black and white with a bright glow illuminating the book, that really struck us. more ›
