Song 1 is not a masterpiece, but it's better than a lot of what you'll find at the multiplex.
Doug Aitken's Song 1 @ Hirshhorn
Local Songwriter Sings His Way Along the 42
How long you wait for a bus before you just start walking is a question every D.C. commuter has asked themselves at some point, and now it's the central theme of a catchy sing-along about the woes of one Metrobus rider.

Thievery Corporation Releases Pro-Occupy Video
You may not like the Occupy D.C. encampment at McPherson Square, but it's hard not to dig "Unified Tribes," the new Thievery Corporation and Mr. Lif collaboration that extols the virtues of the movement while featuring D.C. prominently in the song's video.
For Your Viewing Pleasure: Tom Petty Cut-Out Does D.C.
Just last week, I walked by a man with a small Tom Petty cardboard cut-out and video camera in Mt. Pleasant. My journalistic curiosity must have been particularly dull that day, because I didn't think twice about it and simply went on my merry way. Big mistake.

On Wednesday evening, Occupy D.C. protesters marched down to the Wilson Building, where they replaced a D.C. flag with an Occupy banner. Now they've apologized.
Disturbing Video of Grandmother Throwing Baby Off Tysons Walkway
On Thursday, a Fairfax County jury found Carmela dela Rosa guilty of first-degree murder, determining she understood what she was doing when she dropped her 2-year-old granddaughter off an elevated walkway at Tysons Corner Center last year. Now, surveillance video from Tysons Corner Center that was used to convict dela Rosa has been released, which shows her throwing the child off the bridge.
NPS Releases Washington Monument Earthquake Footage
Here's some pretty wild footage -- the National Park Service has released three videos recorded inside the tip of the Washington Monument as a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the District on August 23.
Ask And Ye Shall Receive: Baby Gorilla Video
he heroic public affairs staff at the National Zoo heard my plea this morning for adorable baby animals and sent me this video of two-year-old (so maybe more "toddler" than "baby") gorilla Kibibi, who had her first medical exam yesterday. Above is Kibibi waking up from her post-exam haze; you can find two more b-roll videos on the Zoo's Flickr page. Though be warned, they are actually full-on medical exams, so if needles wig you out, just click over to these crazy adorable photos of baby Kibibi romping about with mom instead.
The Biggest Donation Is Obviously His Enthusiasm
Yesterday, we (among several others) shared the story of Robert Kasmir, the George Washington University athletic donor who was honored for a five-figure donation during halftime of Saturday's game against Dayton -- then summarily booted from the game after jawing at the referees during the second half. And now, thanks to the miracle of video technology, we can enjoy Mr. Kasmir soaking in his moment in the limelight. Soak it in, man.
America The Beautiful (Except When Its Residents Differ)
There's a whole bunch of hooting and hollering going on about Sharia law these days -- and, predictably, all it's producing is a bunch of incredibly disgusting behavior. Washington is no exception: there was a pro-Sharia protest scheduled to take place today outside the White House; when that protest's leader, Anjem Choudary, postponed the protest, the anti-Sharia counter-protesters were left with nothing to do but toss metal crosses at a man while he prayed.
These Dudes Have Probably Won A Bet Or Two In Their Time
A group of Texans may have perfected the art of the trick shot, but this ain't too shabby. Unearthed by Dan Steinberg, here's American University hoopsters Joe Hill and Steve Luptak canning a bunch of insane shots from all over Bender Arena.
No, The Ice Doesn't Melt
Have you ever wondered how the Verizon Center transforms from a hockey rink into a basketball court when the Capitals and the Wizards play at home on the same day? TBD's Sara Kenigsberg filmed this awesome behind-the-scenes look at the transformation in action, as crews resurface the ice, take down the glass around the rink, lay down concrete slabs, take out the penalty boxes and boards, retract and install a bunch of seats, and then hammer the maple basketball floor down into place -- all in the span of about three hours.

Yes, Someone Was So Upset About Adams Mill Bar & Grill Closing, They Made A Downfall Parody About It
Wait, are we still doing Downfall parodies? It all seems a little too 2009 for my tastes, but, obviously, I can't begrudge anyone for creatively venting when their favorite bar closes its doors suddenly. [The subtitles in the video are NSFW, so tilt those monitors.]
Man Charged With Recording Upskirt Videos at Dulles
An employee at a Borders bookstore located inside Dulles International Airport has been charged with taping upskirt videos of women inside the airport. NBCWashington reports that the Airports Authority began investigating 26-year-old David Solomon this summer after a woman reported that Solomon, carrying a telephoto lens, was following them too closely on escalators. Even creepier: police searched the townhouse where Solomon was living and found 700 similar videos -- plus some child pornography and a guide to shooting upskirts -- which dated back to a previous charge on a similar crime while Solomon was at the University of Virginia.
Pat Collins: Zen Master
It's been a pretty good week for NBC4 reporter Pat Collins. First, we highlighted his awesome dinosaur lunch box and bomber hat. Then, he had a delicious-sounding wintry cocktail named after him. (Peppermint schnapps, Baileys, and hot chocolate? Uh, I'll take one of those, please.) Then, last night, Collins truly broke into the zeitgeist: his hoagie-related double entendre -- "if there's any night you need 15 inches of fun, this would be the night"-- was featured as last night's Daily Show Moment of Zen.
A Break From The Doom And Gloom
Last night was one big mess, but at least it wasn't a total loss for one group of people who headed out to see violinist Joshua Bell play at Strathmore. According to DCist reader Dakota Korth, when his group arrived at the venue, they were informed that the show was canceled due to a power outage. We'll let Korth take it from there.
Watch As The Beltway Turns Into A Big, Chilly Pool
Check out this amazing piece of video which really documents the enormity of the 54-inch water main break which shut down a large section of the Capital Beltway this morning. Not only did the rushing water cause serious damage and grind traffic to a halt for hours this morning, but the break has forced Andrews Air Force Base into "reduced operations," and led to the closure of several area schools and the offices of the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland.

Alexander Ovechkin, Nesting Dolls and Salad Dressing
If you were on Jeopardy, your response to that headline would surely be "what is the recipe for a hilarious YouTube clip?" (Or something far, far, far more disturbing that you should totally keep to yourself.)
A Stickup, In The Most Literal Sense Of The Word
Pop quiz, hotshot: you're the store clerk at a Manassas, Virginia convenience store. You're minding your own business on a Tuesday morning, when all of the sudden, a guy busts in with a stick bigger than you and starts swinging wildly. What do you do? What do you do?
D.C. Boxer Seeks To Represent U.S. At 2012 Olympics
21-year-old D.C. native Tyrieshia Douglas, who spent some of her youth in Washington's foster care system and picked up boxing at age 16, wants to represent the United States at the Olympics in 2012. Paging Mike Panetta!
And, Of Course, The Squirrels
It's not news to us that Washington, D.C. is the home of some of the most daring squirrels in the Western Hemisphere -- a lesson this individual learned the hard way while trying to capture a close-up of one furry scavenger while walking around what appears to be the National Mall.
Hide/Seek Co-Curator: Pulled Video "Was A Lucky Hit"
Last night, the Washington Jewish Community Center (DCJCC) hosted a packed house of over two hundred people for the highly-anticipated panel discussion "hide/SPEAK: An Evening with David C. Ward of the National Portrait Gallery." The panel also included Transformer director Victoria Reis, ARTINFO blogger Tyler Green and DCJCC Bronfman Gallery director Dafna Steinberg.
But everyone was there to hear Ward, the National Portrait Gallery historian and co-curator of Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, explain his stance on the Smithsonian's controversial decision to pull the Wojnarowicz video and their subsequent rejection of AA Bronson's request, made in protest, that his work be pulled from the show and returned to the National Gallery of Canada.
Reminder: You Are Not Qualified To Care For Lion Cubs
In this video, National Zoo Great Cats curator Craig Saffoe explains why taking care of the National Zoo's lion cubs -- who had a limited debut this weekend -- involves actually involves more work than just sitting there and fawning over how freakin' cute they are.
Matt Stairs, Professional Hitter, Comes To Washington

Signing a 42-year-old first baseman who comes to bat accompanied by Stone Cold Steve Austin's entrance theme, of course. Welcome to Washington, Matt Stairs! The Nats signed the first-baseman to a non-guaranteed minor league deal this morning.
