Hands Off, Today Show, The Baby Cheetahs Are Ours

Hands Off, Today Show, The Baby Cheetahs Are Ours

This morning, NBC's Today show featured a segment on the National Zoo's lovable pair of cheetah cubs, providing them with some serious bragging rights in their ongoing cuteness battle with the Zoo's lion cubs. The Zoo has also set up a real-time cheetah cub cam, so you can keep an eye on the little critters even when you're stuck behind your desk. more ›

Let's Keep The Surrealism Going, Shall We?

Let's Keep The Surrealism Going, Shall We?

So far today, we've featured a sloppily-edited-yet-mostly-accurate movie trailer, a pair of clowns in the Council chambers and Ted Leonsis giving us a preview of his version of the "Dougie" -- I suppose it's only appropriate to keep things moving along with this video. Here's a clip of Vince Vaughn, who obviously decided the most appropriate way to prove that his "electric cars are gay" joke was harmless was by laying a sloppy one on TBD movie critic Arch Campbell while Vaughn sidekick Kevin James just stood there awkwardly. more ›

Sweet Video of Breakdancing on the Metro System

Hat tip to NBCWashington.com for this fun video piece from local dancer/DJ Mad Sole and friends. I, for one, would like to see more breakdance performances on my daily rides around the Metrorail system. Surely our hometown B-boys can give those more famous New York dance crews a run for their money. more ›

Vince Gray: Election Year is a Bad Time to Raise Taxes

Those pesky Save Our Safety Net folks (the same ones who got several D.C. Council members to put on superhero capes last week) got up in D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray's face with a camera during a lobbying push this morning. You've got to admire their moxie. more ›

Needed: Duckling Access Ramps

Thanks to frequent Flickr contributor philliefan99 for dropping this heart-tugging video into our pool. These ducklings look they are just too little to hop over those big fountain steps in Pershing Park. All of them except for one, anyway. Spring in D.C. really brings an abundance of cute. We're keeping our fingers crossed for these little guys! more ›

Watch: Video of College Park Police Beating

In the event you haven't yet watched the video that was released by an attorney for one of the University of Maryland students who claims he was beaten by Prince George's County police officers last month, take a minute to do so now. You'll recall that 27 people were arrested on March 3 in the wake of post-game celebrations in College Park -- celebrations that by all accounts got out of hand. But this video is really quite damning, and has in fact already led to the suspension of at least one and a criminal investigation against a total of three sworn officers. more ›

Local documentary filmmaker Kirk Fraser and his company, May 3rd Films, has posted a pair of trailers online for the spec reality TV show he's been making about former mayor and Ward 8 D.C. Council member Marion Barry. News of the show's existence first surfaced back in November. more ›

Another Adorable Same-Sex Wedding Video

This comes courtesy DC Agenda, which had exclusive access to the courthouse nuptials of Jeremy Moon and Bryan Legaspi earlier this morning. Their marriage, officiated by D.C. Superior Court Judge Brook Hedge, took place at roughly the same time as a religious ceremony joining James Betz and Robert Hawthorne went on outside the courthouse. The two couples marked the first legally recognized same-sex weddings to be performed in the District of Columbia on March 9. more ›

First Same-Sex Couples Get Hitched in D.C.

First Same-Sex Couples Get Hitched in D.C.

The Post reported earlier that the very first gay couples to get legally wed in the District of Columbia this morning were Jeremy Moon and Bryan Legaspi, a pair of White House staffers, and James Betz and Robert Hawthorne. The two couples appear to have held their marriage ceremonies nearly simultaneously, one inside the courthouse in judges chambers, and the other just outside the building. more ›

Alleged Pentagon Shooter Had a Blog, Made YouTube Video

Via the Post's Breaking News blog, a YouTube video from 2006 has turned up of alleged Pentagon shooter John Patrick Bedell, in which he lays out a online software product he invented called "Information Currency." With the use of crude stick figure diagrams, he describes a vague process that will "create a financial market for information." more ›

27 Arrested in Post-Game Celebrations in College Park

The Post reports that 27 people were arrested in the skirmish, many of them University of Maryland students. WUSA9's video footage clearly shows officers using violent tactics against some of the revelers: one student was hit in the head repeatedly with a night stick, while another was beaten with a riot shield. Some of those celebrating are also shown pulling down a street sign, and later, a smaller group of students set fire to a tree on campus, according to the Post. more ›

National Zoo Launches Andean Bear Cub Cam

The Smithsonian's National Zoo has announced the birth of two Andean bear cubs, born to 4-year-old Billie Jean back in mid-January. The twins are believed to have been over a 24-hour period Jan. 14-15, but momma bear and her offspring have been secluded in a private indoor habitat, so all zookeepers know for sure at this point is what they can see and hear via closed-circuit camera and a sound monitor. So far, zoo officials say it looks like all three bears are doing well. more ›

Bob Ryan Signs Off from NBC4

Venerable WRC/NBC4 weatherman Bob Ryan bid a low key but still emotional farewell to his viewers on Friday night. The rumors are that he may soon resurface at rival WJLA/ABC7, but the man has been with NBC for 30 years. His departure is without a doubt the end of an era. more ›

Remember When Snow Was Fun?

As we spot the first flurries of this latest storm front, it's easy to get down in the dumps. The threat of more snow has long since become tedious, and we'd just like to be able to walk down a non-icy sidewalk like a normal person, thankyouverymuch. In a seeming effort to remind us all that snow is supposed to be fun, Columbia Heights residents Jordan Gantz and Nathan Golon [full disclosure: Jordan and I were roommates in the same group house about four years ago] have produced this beautifully shot little music video depicting the city during last weekend's storm. Allow me to warn you: the soundtrack, a moody Vampire Weekend song, may very well make this a little too emo for some tastes. So proceed with some caution if you lack that particular sweet tooth, and turn down the volume if necessary. more ›

Blonde Charity Mafia Trailer on MTV UK

Blonde Charity Mafia Trailer on MTV UK

Looks like the beleaguered Blonde Charity Mafia has found at least some form of new life: an unembeddable trailer for the show popped up on the web site of MTV's UK channel today, presumably as a prelude to the show's premiere (the site mentions Jan. 11 as the first air date). No word on if any plans are in the works to show the reality program in the United States. The CW dropped its plans to air Blonde Charity Mafia last month. more ›

Gilbert Arenas's Birthday Video

Tomorrow is Gilbert Arenas's 28th birthday, so in addition to continuing to post a stream of insane updates to his Twitter account that attempt to play off his gun controversy as a big joke (though in fairness, the last message on the subject -- "no im not going to jail i didnt do what they keep writing but stay away from guns..i was wrong for puttn them in my locker" -- makes it seem like Gil is finally taking this thing a little more seriously), the Wizards player is back to posting comedy videos. This time it's a very special birthday episode of the Agent Zero Show, complete with rapping dolls posed in suggestive ways. Probably more or less safe for work, but proceed with some caution. more ›

Video: "The Caps Rap"

Today's news has featured an awful lot of reminders that Washington's sports teams aren't what they should be. At least the Capitals continue to offer us solace, hope and happiness. In that vein, via the tipline, we offer "The Caps Rap," a solid little piece of music video work from director Andrew Bowser. more ›

How a D.C. Band's Beat Conquered the World

There's a fascinating video floating around Twitter these days, recently reposted by Rainn Wilson of The Office. The video, by Nate Harrison, is actually at least several years old, but it artfully explains how a 6-second drum beat (or break) from 1969 called the "Amen break" by D.C. funk and soul group The Winstons became almost ubiquitous. The break is one of the most sampled pieces of music of all time, has been in countless hip hop records, commercials, and arguably was the basis for a lot of drum and bass and jungle music. It's one of those things that once you know what it is, you recognize it everywhere, like the Wilhelm scream. more ›

Jawbox Rocks Jimmy Fallon

In the event you couldn't stay up late enough to catch the Very Special Jawbox Reunion performance last night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (or just couldn't make it though Fallon's awkward attempts at being a late night talk show host/at all funny), we've posted the videos, courtesy NBC, below. more ›

Set Your TiVos: Jawbox on Jimmy Fallon Tonight

The highly anticipated Jawbox reunion performance is all set to take place tonight on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The influential '90s band will appear in order to pimp the reissue of their 1994 major label debut, For Your Own Special Sweetheart. Also, to break our collective hearts by reminding us how good they were, but yet failing to schedule a hometown reunion concert. Sniff. more ›

First Trailer for The Real World DC

First Trailer for The Real World DC

MTV has posted the first trailer for The Real World DC on its web site. It includes a number of establishing shots of our fair city (including, inexplicably, an intro featuring President Barack Obama exiting Marine One to the tune of the Civil War-era song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," aka "The Ants Go Marching," ... maybe the producers confused it with "Hail to the Chief"?), and there are a couple of fun scenes showing off the D.C. locale: one of the cast members meeting Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), another playing around in the White House briefing room, that kind of thing. But most of the storylines that are teased are pretty much standard Real World fare: hook-ups, young people unsure of who they are or what they'll do with their lives, and of course, girls running around with their tops off. more ›

President Obama Pardons the White House Turkey

President Obama Pardons the White House Turkey

President Barack Obama pardoned his first White House turkey, Courage, a little while ago. The White House has since released video of the ceremony (see below), during which Obama called Courage "a good looking bird." The president was in a joking mood, noting that "there are days when I'm reminded why I ran for this office ... and then there are days like this, when you pardon a turkey and send it Disneyland." more ›

Deer Dies After Lion Attack Inside National Zoo

Deer Dies After Lion Attack Inside National Zoo

Many of you have likely already seen this YouTube video shot by Ephraim and Christy Smethers (and fair warning, it's graphic in the same way that many nature shows are) of a deer being attacked by a lion at the National Zoo yesterday. The deer, which had presumably wandered in to the Zoo from neighboring Rock Creek Park, managed to run inside the lion habitat, and the lions, being lions, went after the young animal like it was a tasty snack. more ›
