Vigil Planned for Hospitalized Board Of Education Member
A vigil will be held outside of George Washington University Hospital this evening for William Lockridge, the District 4 Member of the D.C. State Board of Education, who was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering a stroke. Lockridge, who has served at nearly every conceivable level of local governance in the District, was rushed to the hospital on Friday and remains in the intensive care unit.
Vigil for Rep. Giffords, Victims of Tucson Shooting at Capitol Tonight
In case you missed the news, a 22-year-old man opened fire at a Tucson Safeway grocery store today, killing at least six and injuring a total of 18. U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords was at the grocery store and was shot in the face; she is recovering following surgery. John M. Roll, a senior U.S. District judge in Arizona, who was also at the grocery store, died along with a 9-year-old girl and at least four others. There will be a vigil tonight for the victims at the Capitol building at 7 p.m. The vigil will start at 1st and Independence Avenue SW and the attendees will then walk to the U.S. Capitol. Stop by to show solidarity with the victims and Arizona.
DC9 Liquor License Suspended; Vigil Planned Near Club Tonight
Some not-so-surprising news: NBCWashington.com is reporting this afternoon that DC9 has had its liquor license suspended. The bar will now need to state its case for reinstatement in front of the District's Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration -- no date has been set for that hearing as of yet. The club had already moved or canceled all of the events scheduled at the club through the first of November. In related news: a candlelight vigil, organized by friends of Ali Ahmed Mohammed, has been planned for this evening at the corner of 9th and U Streets NW. The vigil will take place at 6 p.m.
Desi Deschaine Remembered at Logan Circle Vigil
Family, friends and colleagues of D.C. Council staffer Desi Deschaine, who died Sunday night in an apparent drowning in Baltimore Harbor, gathered in Logan Circle last night to remember a young man who was dedicated to community service.
Holocaust Museum Shooting Vigil Planned for 2 p.m.
In the wake of yesterday's fatal shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington and the InterFairth Conference of Metropolitan Washington have planned a Holocaust Prayer Vigil this afternoon for 2 p.m.. Area residents are encouraged to attend the event, which will take place directly in front of the museum, located at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW, near Independence Ave. and 14th Street SW. The event will serve to honor Stephen Johns, the security guard who was shot and killed in the line of duty, as well as an opportunity to reflect on the motivations behind the tragedy.
