Virgin Mobile Tickets Can Still Be Had By Volunteering

This year's Virgin Mobile Festival's plan to give out tickets for free worked like a charm. The concert's organizers say 35,000 free tickets were gobbled up in minutes when they went on "sale" this weekend.

Michelle Obama, Jill Biden Volunteer at Capital Area Food Bank

You've got to hand it to Michelle Obama's staff: they seem to have a good grasp of which local D.C. nonprofits are deserving of a little First Lady face time. Obama, along with Vice Presidential spouse Jill Biden, went down to the Capital Area Food Bank on Wednesday to help pass out bagged meals for low-income kids in the area. Previously, the first lady has volunteered at Miriam's Kitchen and Mary's Center.

Help D.C. Girls to Rock!

We're unabashed fans of Girls Rock! DC, the one-week day camp for girls age 8-18 (check out some of our previous coverage). The camp is now entering its second year, and they've asked us for help locating volunteers. Girls Rock! DC is seeking volunteers of all kinds to be counselors, band coaches, fundraisers, roadies and more. No musical experience is necessary, and volunteers can work during camp week (Aug. 10-15) or behind the scenes before camp. Volunteer applications are due this Monday, May 4, so download an application and contact the camp with any questions you might have.

This Saturday you can find all 50 members of Team DCist out at Harriet Tubman Elementary School in Columbia Heights, landscaping the grounds, painting the windows, and fixing up playground games for Servathon 2008. We're thrilled so many of you stepped up to volunteer this year, and can't wait to meet you all somewhere other than a comment thread.

Civic-minded young Washingtonians have a chance to be a part of something bigger than just D.C., while at the same time helping their neighbors. Thousands of young people will give back this weekend as part of Global Youth Service Day (each individual project is one day, but the event runs from April 25-27).

It's a rare day in the non-profit world when you have to ask people to stop volunteering, but alas, Team DCist has no more room for additional members at our Servathon project site, Harriet Tubman Elementary School. We now have 50 volunteers, almost double last year's participation. There are still plenty of spots available at other schools, so eager volunteers can still sign up, but you'll be assigned a different DCPS location.

Posted to the Metropolitan Police Department's email lists this morning: an exciting volunteer opportunity!

4 DC hospitals in Washington (Washington Hospital, Children's, National Rehab and Veterans Affairs) are conducting an exercise involving a dirty bomb scenario and we will need about 100 victim volunteers. Please feel free to announce this volunteer opportunity through your network and ask that those interested in volunteering contact me prior to March 26.

There's good news: DCist is already one of the leading teams as far as recruiting volunteers and fundraising for this year's Servathon. But we need five more volunteers by Sunday, March 16, to get our team name printed on our shirts for free. (Don't you want a Team DCist shirt to wear to the gym? You know you do.)
