Gray Addresses Rhee's Departure at Ward 2 Town Hall

Gray Addresses Rhee's Departure at Ward 2 Town Hall

During his opening speech to a packed Ward 2 town hall last night, presumptive Mayor-elect Vince Gray welcomed Interim D.C. Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson -- who was in the audience -- and briefly addressed the resignation of Chancellor Michelle Rhee.

"Chancellor Rhee did not abruptly quit. That is absolutely fallacious. Nor did I ask chancellor Rhee to leave her position," said Gray energetically, as he spoke to the audience. He also defended the outgoing Chancellor, stating that "she is committed to our children," and that "she made a lot of progress" in the District. more ›

Gray Town Hall Tour Lands in Ward 2 Tonight

Presumptive Mayor-elect Vince Gray heads back to "unfriendly" territory tonight: he'll host a town hall in Ward 2, 72 percent of which sided with Mayor Adrian Fenty in the Democratic primary. This is the fourth of Gray's eight town halls scheduled throughout October; so far, Gray has hit Ward 5, Ward 3 and Ward 7. The Ward 2 town hall comes only a day after D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee announced her resignation, so while Gray keeping her or not will no longer be an elephant in the room, there may still be some pointed questions on school reform. Interim Chancellor Kaya Henderson said she may attend some of the town halls; this might be one of them, but nothing's confirmed yet. The town hall will take place at the Foundry United Methodist Church (1500 16th Street NW) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. We'll be there again, and if you attend, use the #ward2 hashtag or shoot me your thoughts at martin (at) dcist (dot) com. more ›

Plenty of ANC Seats Still Up for Grabs

The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics tweeted today that a week into the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) nominating process, 156 people have picked up petitions to get on the November ballot. As we reported last week, being elected to an ANC spot isn't very tough -- you just need 25 signatures to get on the ballot, and once you're on there, it's a safe bet that you won't face any competition. more ›

Jack Evans Hops Aboard a SmartBike at Bike Lane Unveiling

We've been following the work on the new 15th Street NW contraflow bike lane for a while now, and today the District Department of Transportation and Mayor Fenty hosted a little ceremony to announce its formal completion. But we have to thank IMGoph for tweeting to point out that one of the images DDOT sent around from the ribbon cutting features Ward 2 Council member Jack Evans (D) aboard one of the city's SmartBikes. We're used to seeing the likes of Fenty and famed cycling enthusiast Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) on bikes, but Jack Evans? He looks about as comfortable as a bear on ice skates. Click through to DDOT's Facebook page to scroll through the rest of their images from today's event. DDOT Director Gabe Klein also joined Fenty and Evans for their little ride. more ›
