Prostitution Doesn't Go Away, It Just Moves
The balloon effect seems to apply to the District's efforts to crack down on prostitution, writes WAMU reporter David Schultz in a must-read piece today. Crack down in one place, and it'll simply appear elsewhere.

The Sunday Morning Post
Good morning, Washington. Perfect. That’s what the Washington Capitals remain. In a matchup with the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night -- only the second time in NHL history two teams with records of at least 5-0 faced off -- the Capitals popped seven goals on 25 shots, securing a 7-1 victory over the Red Wings and launching the team into the venerated spot of being only the fifth in league history to start a season 7-0-0.

Ron Moten, the Peaceaholics co-founder who had made overtures about running for the D.C. Council seat currently held by Councilmember Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7), now tells the Washington Post that he is planning on running -- as a Republican.
Four Wards Battle for Contested Territory
Many wars have been fought over contested borders and boundaries, and two small technical errors written into the District's recent redistricting could well have pitted four wards against each other in epic showdowns over territory and treasure.
More Candidates Jump Into 2012 D.C. Races
In recent weeks, a number of new candidates have jumped into local D.C. races, challenging just about every incumbent up for re-election.
Third Farmers' Market Opens East of the River
In the District's eastern-most wards, farmers' markets -- which have proliferated throughout the city in recent years, recently exceeding 30 -- are far harder to find. Last weekend, though, Ward 7 welcomed a new farmers' market, the second for the ward and the third serving communities east of the Anacostia River.

This afternoon, the District's Office of Campaign Finance released the results of an investigation into allegedly improper campaign spending by D.C. Councilmember Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7). Yvette Alexander's Phone Bills: Piling Up?
The cavalcade of various financial issues plaguing D.C. Retail Politics Dominate Ward 7 Town Hall
Though last night's Ward 7 town hall was a homecoming of sorts for Vince Gray, the audience packed into the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church peppered the presumptive mayor-elect with the type of questions he could have expected when he represented the ward on the D.C. Council. Few were the questions on broad policy matters, replaced instead with personal appeals and retail politics.
Ward 7 and 8 See Large Rise In Sexual Orientation Hate Crimes
Jason Cherkis broke down the most recent set of crime data from MPD on Friday, and his findings were disturbing. While the number of hate crimes -- or, perhaps more accurately, the number of reported hate crimes -- have remained stagnant over the last three years, hate crimes involving sexual orientation have skyrocketed in Wards 7 and 8, compared to 2008. Wards 7 and 8, eh? Cherkis goes ahead and makes the negative connection which immediately springs to mind: Councilmembers Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) and Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) were the only two nay votes last Tuesday when same-sex marriage legislation passed the Council. On the flip side, the uptick might actually be a positive sign that police officers are actually beginning to rightfully report these types of crimes as hate crimes. Obviously, with such crimes, one must consider a veritable black hole of incredibly sensitive factors, so narrowing down one specific conclusion from such a small amount of data is always going to be a challenge. So what can we narrow down? He was talking about politics, but Bishop Harry Jackson's promise of "bloodletting" in retribution for the legislation's success certainly looks even worse than it did when it was printed next to his name.
New Shuttle Service Makes H Street NE More Accessible
As anyone who has ever tried to get to H Street NE without a car knows, the area isn’t terribly accessible. Visitors to the area are often faced with a long walk from Union Station, trying to figure out the X2 bus schedule, or the often difficult task of finding a cab back at the end of the night. But all of that is has now changed.
