Art galleries around the city are participating in ColorField.remix, a celebration of the Washington Color School movement of the 1960s. As part of this city-wide festival, The Phillips Collection is showing Lyrical Color: Morris Louis, Gene Davis, Kenneth Noland, and the Washington Color School, an exhibit highlighting six artists from the movement. The collection is tastefully mounted and the pieces are a visual feast. However, the exhibit is also somewhat limited in that there is not enough material to explore the movement in any real depth.

Back in the Swinging Sixties, Washington was home to a collection of artists who were dubbed forerunners of abstract, color field painting. As an integral part of this season’s ColorField.remix, a visitation of the legacy left behind by the Washington Color School painters, Hemphill Fine Arts presents a three-artist exhibition: Jason Gubbiotti’s Wrong Way to Paradise; Leon Berkowitz’s The Cathedral Series; and Portia Munson’s Pink Project: Contained.

April is a huge month for visual art in D.C. Friday marks the beginning of the twofive-week-long Artomatic, while later this month we'll be treated to the first ever international art fair in the city with artDC, both of which we'll tell you more about as they come closer.

>> Avoid the mall and take advantage of the numerous venues for purchasing handmade arts and crafts here in D.C., including Gateway Georgia Avenue's 2nd Annual Holiday ArtWalk tomorrow night in Silver Spring. Local artists will have paintings, prints, photos, quilts and more available for sale for $15-$300. Even if you're only browsing, you can enjoy free empanadas from Los Arrieros or wine and finger food at The Graphic Workshop, Pyramid Atlantic and Kari Minnick Glass Studio. Festivities last from 7-9 p.m. Other arts-related shopping opportunities of the week include the Arts Market at the Ellipse in Arlington (closing Saturday) and the final weekend of Western Market in Adams Morgan for the season (Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.).
