High Times: DCist's Coverage of Weed in the District

The February issue of Washingtonian may have surprised subscribers when they pulled it out of their mailbox. The cover image depicts a main grooming a large marijuana leaf topiary on the front lawn of a decidedly suburban landscape. more ›

Who Doesn't Love Tom Sherwood?

Who Doesn't Love Tom Sherwood?

Yesterday the Washingtonian published its list of the 2011 Washingtonians of the Year. Included amongst the list of prominent locals is none other than Tom Sherwood, an NBC4 reporter, columnist for the Current Newspapers and guest analyst on WAMU's The Kojo Nnamdi Show. more ›

Pardon The Interruption

Not to butt into today's important stories about panda dancing, mail trucks and free french fries or anything -- but I'd be remiss if I didn't pass along the news that my predecessor, DCist editor emeritus Sommer Mathis, has been named the new Editorial Director at Washingtonian.com. Sommer's actually the second DCist alum to take the editorial reins at Washingtonian, joining former editor Catherine Andrews -- she tells me that, in addition to working on the web side of things, she's hoping to produce some work for the print magazine too. Two Takes: Tom Lee on Historic Preservation

Two Takes: Tom Lee on Historic Preservation

At just over ten thousand words, Larry Van Dyne's Washingtonian article about the history of historic preservation in the District is indisputably thorough. But just about everything else about the article is up for debate. Despite his comprehensive accounting, Van Dyne is careful not to express an opinion of his own — although a reader will inevitably develop her own, if only because of the piece's length. Calling for an Ambulance? Read This

We've got to link to John Pekkanen's disturbing investigative piece in this month's Washingtonian magazine revealing utter dysfunction inside the District's emergency medical services agency. It's a very long story, but worth reading all the way through as it really rams home the point that fatal breakdowns within the fire department-led FEMS have resulted in undertrained and demoralized EMTs. The circumstances that led to the death of David Rosenbaum, it seems, were hardly aberrations. The report is also especially disturbing in light of the recent allegations reported by blogger Carlos in DC that the recent death of Jose Sanchez in Columbia Heights was not the result of indifferent neighbors but a failure of EMS response. The Weekly Feed: Give Us Our Daily Rolls Edition

The Weekly Feed: Give Us Our Daily Rolls Edition

Over the last two weeks, Todd Kliman's chatters have gotten riled up over CityZen's Parker House rolls. A chatter wrote in about his/her experience at CityZen a few months ago with pleasant servers and delicious food. But then he/she complained that his/her party of seven requested a second serving of the Parker House rolls. Apparently the server hesitated and seemed uncomfortable, but said he would check with the kitchen. The chatter said that they did not receive more bread or more information, and as such, the individual expressed that he/she felt ripped off, and had written a letter of complaint that was ignored. This prompted him/her to decide never to return and tell friends not to dine there. more ›
