MONDAY >> While DCist tries not to be in the habit of taunting our readership too much, we would be remiss in not mentioning My Morning Jacket’s sold out show at the 9:30 club. The Kentucky band is notable for their innovative take on rock as much as their legendary live shows. Self-described avant-rock trio The Slip will be opening. Best of luck to those of you now scanning Craigslist for tickets. >> Alternatively, two... more ›

Death Cab for Cutie at DAR Constitution Hall

Death Cab for Cutie at DAR Constitution Hall

Despite the multiple accolades some of us have given Death Cab for Cutie's live shows in the past, sometimes, the band's lo-fi stylings and muted yet upbeat melodies just don't quite do it for all of us. A lot of times, their albums -- though plenty and successful -- always seem to leave us wanting a little something more. Last night however, not only did we get that little bit more, we were converted into... more ›

Eating In: DCist's Crab Cake Sandwich

Eating In: DCist's Crab Cake Sandwich

With temperatures approaching the 90’s and heat indexes breaking the century mark, we can be sure that summer is now upon us. While DCist has yet to find the perfect tomato that makes cooking in this season so delightful, we have still turned our thoughts to foods more indicative of hot and lazy days. The crab cake sandwich has been a staple for Marylanders, who will surely shun Roy Rogers take on the seafood classic. DCist recommends you give Old Roy the cold shoulder as well and try this one Eating In. more ›

Morning Roundup: Buckminster Fuller Edition

Morning Roundup: Buckminster Fuller Edition

Photo of the District cityscape taken from the heights of Kalorama by Fur Cafe, posted in DCist Photos. Good morning Washington. We'll probably remind you again later on today, but please remember to come on out tonight to the Black Cat for DCist Presents: Unbuckled ... with Cartel and Bicycle Thieves. We're looking forward to a great show. You should be too. (Don't forget about the free concert ticket giveaways.) Capitol, President Evacuated: Remember... more ›

Eating In: The Mini Burger

Eating In: The Mini Burger

Everyone’s doing it. Why shouldn’t you? While DCist usually tries not to succumb to peer pressure, one cannot deny the endless utility of the mini-burger. Getting its start as late night diner fare and moving to sports bars everywhere to help fans keep down their beer, the mini burger is taking over. Tallula has taken the micro morsel one step further by adding truffle butter and caramelized onions in an attempt at gourmet bar fare. more ›

Using D.C. as a Policy Billboard

The usually Spartan feel of the Capitol South metrorail station has been broken by, of all things, pictures of smiling couples. As part of an advertising campaign, all nine available billboard spots at the station's entrance have taken to declaring the merits of marriage. While it isn't odd for policy pushers to target the metrorail system, especially stations close to the Capitol campus (like Capitol South and Union Station), we were struck by all the happiness amid all the miserable commuters. more ›

Eating In: DCist's Israeli Falafel

Eating In: DCist's Israeli Falafel

Only one column in and DCist's resident chef, Scott Reitz, is already departing from our quick, easy, and elegant motif. Trust us -- the extra work for this one is definitely worth it. more ›

Adams Morgan Named Great Public Space

Adams Morgan Named Great Public Space

The Project for Public Spaces has named D.C.'s Adams Morgan Neighborhood a "great public space." The neighborhood is seen here in a photograph taken by Cris Martin. The groups's neighborhood description, apparently lifted verbatim from the Beyond DC website, raves it is "hip but not yuppified, diverse but not preachy, safe but still gritty, cool but not uppity, and fun but not taken over by Starbucks and Disney. Adams Morgan is, for many, the toast of the DC urban experience." While DCist does enjoy Adams Morgan, a cursory exploration in September revealed plenty of gentrification of note. more ›

Things Going By on a Foggy Foggy Night

Things Going By on a Foggy Foggy Night

Just a few days left before the hard-to-read national elections, the weather had its way setting an eerie, spooky tone for the Halloween weekend. Even Osama bin Laden made an unexpected appearance as the fog rolled in and became entrenched Friday night. But then if things couldn't get more peculiar, they did. Around 3:45 a.m., DCist was at Cafe Romeo's, a late-night pizza and sandwich place, located next to Holy Rood Cemetery on Wisconsin... more ›

D.C. to Inspect Georgetown Off-Campus Housing

D.C. to Inspect Georgetown Off-Campus Housing

D.C. inspectors will be inspecting housing units on Prospect Street following the death of a Georgetown University student in an apartment fire over the weekend. Although 3318 Prospect St. had fire alarms and met code, Daniel Rigby, 21, had been sleeping in the same room where faulty wiring leading to the house's furnace sparked the fatal blaze. more ›

Who Are We?

So if you've been wondering who we are, we have a staff page that is more or less ready for viewing, but with new DCist contributors coming on board, look for it to change. more ›

A New Chinatown Facade

A New Chinatown Facade

DCist was in Gallery Place/Chinatown/East End/Penn Quarter (take your pick) last week to take a look at the massive soon-to-be-completed building at the southeast corner of Seventh and H streets. Already, Urban Outfitters and Benetton have opened their doors. A movie megaplex will open soon, along with some more retail, infusing the Seventh Street corridor with more pedestrian traffic. more ›

Lost Connections With Jews for Jesus

Lost Connections With Jews for Jesus

The folks over at Jews for Jesus have been ridiculed by many around town. They’ve been posted at metrorail stations, spreading the word about their religious philosophy to metropolitan Washington, and have been the butt of many jokes. But through the magic of Craigslist, one man in Bethesda is trying to track down one of the Jews for Jesus representatives. more ›

An Apartment to Make You Feel More 'Post-modern'

An Apartment to Make You Feel More 'Post-modern'

You may have seen U Street's new Ellington apartment building written up in the Post last weekend. The building, located across from the U Street-African American Civil War Memorial-Cardozo Metro stop was formerly the site of a commuter parking lot. Today, it's festooned in neon lights, and the subject of an intense marketing effort to brand the development as a hip place "where urban life begins." From the Post article:

"[The lounge] has the same comfort as my apartment," said Marshall. "I actually fell asleep down there [once], and woke up at 3 a.m. That shows, to me, how safe it is, because I'm someone who's always on guard." ... more ›

Post Says Selig's B'more Concerns Foolish

Post Says Selig's B'more Concerns Foolish

While DCist was expecting the Post's editorial board to support bringing baseball into the District, their staff editorial brings up a few logical points that dispells Baltimore Orioles owner Bud Selig's concerns about the impact a potential move by the Montreal Expos to the Washington region. From the Post:THE BEST ARGUMENT for bringing major league baseball back to the nation's capital lies on the other side of the continent, in the San Francisco Bay area.... more ›

D.C. Adult Literacy Down to 37%

D.C. Adult Literacy Down to 37%

While DCist realizes that despite being the capital of the world's lone superpower, the District has been facing and will continue to face serious social service inequalities. But the fact that only 37 percent of D.C. adults read at a third-grade level is shocking. This figure stands in stark contrast to the laudable statistic that in 2003, the District had the highest rates anywhere in the nation of adults 25 years and up with a bachelor's degree (46 percent) ... Maryland came in second (38 percent). more ›

Red Line Blues

Red Line Blues

DCist doesn't get over much to the eastern leg of the Red Line. Beyond Union Station, places like Brookland-CUA, Forest Glen and Glenmont, seem like far-off magical places. We've heard of Silver Spring (apparently there is some sort of rebirth going on there) and Wheaton has the longest set of escalators in the Western Hemisphere. more ›

Rush, Lauper Out Tonight at Nissan, Wolf Trap

Rush, Lauper Out Tonight at Nissan, Wolf Trap

From DCist contributor Catherine Andrews: It's a dreary Tuesday here in the District, with no end in sight to the August humidity. But fear not, fellow DCists! We've got some entertainment picks for this evening that should have you kicking up your heels and forgetting the workaday woes (and those pesky terror threats) for the night. First, you can take a walk down musical memory lane with your pick of a couple of retro... more ›
