The Sunday Morning Post

Good morning, Washington. There’s quite a bit of gray in the forecast for the next few days -- meteorological and otherwise. Clouds will increase over the District with a chance of showers in the suburbs this afternoon, and this morning Mike Allen reports that the bipartisan deficit supercommittee will declare failure Monday. more ›

Power Outage At P Street Whole Foods

Trying to pull together the materials for a last minute Thanksgiving meal this afternoon? We tried to lend a hand -- but it's going to be tough sledding if you need to buy anything from the Whole Foods at 1440 P Street NW this afternoon. The power went out at the grocery around 2:30 this afternoon, and has come back on...kind of. According to an employee at the store, all the registers are still down as of 2:45 -- so you are more than welcome to shop, but you'll need to wait to actually pay for your goods and leave. The employee we spoke with was not sure when the power would be fully restored, but said that the store is still planning on staying open until 11 p.m. tonight. more ›

Whole Foods Coming To Foggy Bottom

According to Bisnow, Whole Foods has signed a lease to open up a 38,000-square-foot location inside the huge new development at 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, across the street from the George Washington University Hospital. Boston Properties, the owner of the building, had been hush-hush about which grocer would be taking the space, but hey, now you've got one more place to pig out on olives. more ›

P Street Whole Foods Plans to Close an Hour Early Tonight

We heard through the DCist tipline that the P Street Whole Foods in Logan Circle was planning to close an hour early tonight. Given that this is the eve of what is looking like the biggest snow storm Washington has seen in a long time, this merited a phone call. And a customer service rep confirmed that, indeed, the Whole Foods is closing at 9:30 p.m., instead of its usual 10:30, due to an ill-timed staff meeting. You'd think the store's manager might want to reschedule this meeting until next week, under the circumstances. more ›

New Whole Foods to Open Up Exactly Where it is Needed Least

New Whole Foods to Open Up Exactly Where it is Needed Least

Gotta concur with DCmud's sarcasm in reporting this piece of news concerning an expected ribbon cutting next year for a new Whole Foods at the Shops at Wisconsin Place development, located at the Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights nexus.

While the Bethesda-Chevy Chase corridor may seem like a scripted stage setting for the Whole Foods phenomenon, Chevy Chasers have until now had to drive all the way down to Tenley for their organic Gruyere, or eke by (gasp) on Giant or TJ's foodstuffs.
Ruth Samuelson made a handy little map over at Housing Complex to illustrate the point: this actually makes the third Whole Foods location on Wisconsin Avenue, all clustered relatively close to one another. Surely some other neighborhood, like say, Capitol Hill, could use a spot to buy organic arugula sooner than this one. Then again, my feelings on the "Fetishism of Whole Foods" are well established, so it's probably wise not to get too worked up about it. more ›

Molly the Dog is Home Safe

Molly the Dog is Home Safe

One of the longest comment threads in DCist's history can at last come to a happy conclusion. Molly, the 7 year-old Vizsla who was allegedly taken by a stranger while she was tied up outside the P Street Whole Foods, is back home with her family. Tyler Newby, Molly's owner, last night sent out an email to fellow dog owners in the Logan Circle neighborhood announcing his dog's safe return. Molly seems to be in good health, he said, although understandably tired. Details on the police-involved recovery of Molly from the woman who allegedly took her are scant, Newby said, though an officer did tell him that it was evident the woman had mental health issues. "... we want to offer our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us and provided tips and leads. Without those leads, it's unlikely the police would have had enough information to justify spending time investigating," Newby wrote. more ›

Whole Foods Ground Beef Recalled

In case you missed it over the weekend, Whole Foods Market announced a ground beef recall that affects D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The beef has been recalled due to concerns about E. coli contamination. If you have ground beef in your freezer from Whole Foods that was purchased between June 2 and Aug. 6, you should chuck it and bring a receipt or just the packaging to a store for a refund. more ›

Single Alcohol Sales Double Standard in Logan Circle

Single Alcohol Sales Double Standard in Logan Circle

Via City Desk, the Dupont Current (not available online) has a short piece about how the Logan Circle advisory neighborhood commission has given the go-ahead for the P Street Whole Foods to continue selling single-sale beers in the grocery store. The decision reportedly comes after eight months of such sales at the Whole Foods “without major conflict,” but the Current notes that just around the corner on 14th Street, the reputable Barrel House Liquors is... more ›

City Paper really needs to pay employees more This blog post from City Paper's Jessica Gould seems to imply that perhaps City Paper is not paying its employees quite enough. Recalling The Simpsons episode, "Lisa Gets an A", Gould discusses going to Whole Foods with the purpose of compiling a lunch entirely from the free samples. As she went for a sample, one of the employees "caught her in the act." I'm all about... more ›

Whole Foods in Talks for Gallery Place Space

Once again Penn Quarter Living is on the ball with a newsworthy neighborhood post. They link to a Downtown Neighborhood Association announcement that Douglas Development has been negotiating with Whole Foods Market to lease them store space on 7th Street between E and D Streets NW. This is the same space that Balducci's was briefly considering before deciding against the move last year. Balducci's retreat from the location was met with a lot of desperate... more ›

Overheard in D.C.: Gentlemen and Scholars

This week at Overheard, we'd like to take a moment to give thanks for a segment of the population that we feel is unfairly maligned. That's right, we're talking about you, Mr. Stares Blatantly at Women's Breasts on the Metro. And you, sir, who just nearly walked into a pole while leering at the woman who just walked past. We raise our glasses to the guy surreptitiously taking pictures of girls' rear ends on the... more ›

Weekly Columnist Roundup: Meat, Schools and Granola

We read all the local columnists, so you don't have to. This week we find meat-eaters being compared to Michael Vick, a lot of bum opinions on city schools and District residents being called "granola." Courtland Milloy: According to Milloy's Wednesday column in the Post, your choice to eat a hamburger isn't all that different than Michael Vick's decision to brutally fight, torture and kill dogs for money. "We'll kill a duck, deer, turkey --... more ›

Organic Grocery Store to Columbia Heights?

Organic Grocery Store to Columbia Heights?

After some Columbia Heights residents raised a stink about the discount retailers at the DC USA shopping center and campaigned in vain for a Whole Foods, there's something they can be happy about: an organic grocery store, Richmond-based Ellwood Thompson's, could be coming to the neighborhood in 18 months. While the Express' FreeRide blog said the store will only move into an eco-friendly Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) certified building, we contacted... more ›

Morning Roundup: Call Your Senators Edition

Now that it turns out there's almost nothing more embarrassing than watching self-made videos of goofy Americans asking leading questions to presidential candidates, we'd like to suggest you take a valuable lesson from the experience by choosing not to enter your workplace this morning wearing wraparound sunglasses, a Viking outfit or a salmon-colored suit jacket. We'll leave the choice of affecting an over-the-top southern drawl up to you, but you can probably guess where... more ›

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too – two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the... more ›

Columbia Heights Listserve vs. Ross

Columbia Heights Listserve vs. Ross

The Columbia Heights listserv has been a heated battle ground of thinly veiled race and class issues of late. When they're not sniping back and forth, many of the posters have been loudly bemoaning the Ross and Marshalls discount clothing stores coming to the new DCUSA development at 14th and Irving NW. They also complain about the incoming Lane Bryant, Foot Locker, and Mattress Discounters. The listserv has been abuzz with messages such as "How... more ›

Overheard in D.C.: The Real World Awaits

The longest day of the year has just passed us by, the solstice bells have rung out, and far to the north they've seen the sun at midnight. Here in Washington, we brace for the brutal heat we've only just tasted up to now. There is some consolation for the misery mother nature heaps on D.C.'s coming dog days. For many lucky office drones, in summertime the living truly can be easy. That filing that's... more ›
