This is a great time of the year for beer lovers. Winter, more than any other season, is when craft brewers get a chance to flex their creativity and brew some unusual beers that satisfy the palate and warm the heart. Although many have traditionally been called Christmas beers, most brewers these days are going with some variation on the "winter" theme, in a large part because of the stigma of seeing a "Christmas" beer...

The sun is out, the ice is receding and life in D.C. is returning to normal. So why is there still trash rotting on the corners? Yesterday's garbage-related post prompted comments complaining about the city's malingering trash service such as BrodyV's: Apparently I ought to work for the garbage crew in order to maximize my snow days— my trash hasn't been picked up in over 2 weeks. I guarantee that there's more than one...
Many schools are still closed and roads and sidewalks still dangerously icy this morning as the region struggles to dig out of the winter storm that passed through earlier this week. Most of the really bad news continues to come out of the suburbs, where many homes are still without power, and injuries and at least one death have been reported. The Post has a good rundown of the extent of the metro area's ice...
Happy Valentine's Day, Washington. It's icy out! And, as Encino Man taught us, where there's ice, puzzlement and disorientation won't be far behind. We know you've got questions: will your power stay on on? Will you have to go into work? How horrible is your commute going to be? We'll get to that in a second. But first, we must remind you of the traditional Washington area winter storm news edict: THERE SHALL BE NO...
Well you can't say that we, along with every other local prognosticator, didn't warn you of the coming winter storm. Now feel free to look outside and share a mutual groan that the foretold snow event has so far materialized into something more like steady flurries or maybe just an unpleasant dampness which TV weathermen, in an effort to keep viewers interested, assure us could turn into a freezing deathtrap at any time! None...
Not to alarm you, gentle readers, but the Snowpocalypse is nigh. The National Weather Service has already issued a winter storm watch for the entire area beginning late tonight and lasting through Wednesday morning. Forecasters aren't certain they want to label it an exclusively snow event, or if we can expect a wintry mix, which, by the way, is our second favorite kind of mix, after margarita. CapitalWeather predicts the fluffy stuff will start falling in the wee hours of the morning and change to sleet and freezing rain as the day goes on. Predictions for total accumulation range from 4 to 6 inches, depending on who you listen to (Al Gore claims that the sea will rise 10 inches and polar bears everywhere will drown; Republican skeptics have called the warnings of snow an international conspiracy to slow the U.S. economy) and where you live.
Greetings, Washington. Welcome to yet another shortened work week. With no less than three abbreviated work weeks (four for some) in the past month, the prospect of an unmitigated series of five-dayers looms large. So enjoy a back-to-work Tuesday while you can, but don't forget to wear a coat. That's right, January really is a winter month and today will see temps drop throughout the day accompanied by blustery winds, remnants of the deadly winter...
Good morning, Washington. Sorry for the delay in the morning roundup this a.m. - we were too busy trying to catch Butterstick break the cuteness barrier, yet again. Also, we're kind of rusty at this whole thing; it's been a while. This photo was posted to DCist Photos by Flickr user rev_bri; it's of protestors at the new day laborer center that just opened in Herndon. The Post has the story about the tensions...
Today will be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 40s. Snow is expected tomorrow, and officials have already issued a winter storm warning tomorrow as 2-4 inches is expected during the day. The photo is by Grayson Shepard.
