There's Probably A Conclusion Regarding Local Media Affairs In Here Somewhere

At 12:26 this afternoon, Arlington blogger of record ARLnow reported that a bomb threat had been called in to the office building at 1100 Wilson Blvd. in Rosslyn, which houses the main offices of WJLA, Politico and the remains of TBD. This was apparently news to local beat reporters working inside. more ›

Despite Murrow Award, TBD Overhaul Coming Next Week

Despite Murrow Award, TBD Overhaul Coming Next Week

When TBD laid off a whole cadre of talented reporters and editors after a mere six months in existence, most people appeared to agree that it was a hasty move. A move which seems even more foolish now, since the site was recently awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award for the best Online News Operation in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia or the District of Columbia. more ›

TBD Announces Changes to Its Network Members

Friday afternoon, Steve Buttry, TBD's Director of Community Engagement, emailed members of TBD's Community Network to let them know about how the changes to TBD/WJLA will affect their relationship (full disclosure, my neighborhood blog is a member of the network). TBD will get rid of the "News Near You" feature currently on their website. They will begin to only link to content that is of interest to the metro region in general, instead of localized neighborhoods. more ›

Report: Massive Layoffs Coming At TBD

Report: Massive Layoffs Coming At TBD

UPDATE: More details are now coming to the surface about the deep cuts to TBD's workforce. Erik Wemple tells the Washington City Paper that he will be remaining at the operation, which will transition to a "niche site on arts and entertainment" and be part of "a big new presence on WJLA.com." According to anonymous sources quoted by City Paper editor Michael Schaffer, "half the staff," including all of TBD's sportswriters and "most of, if not all" of its news staff will be let go. Wemple responded to our request for comment by stating that "it's clearly a rough day here at TBD." more ›

Report: WJLA To "Take Over" TBD.com

UPDATE (2:20 p.m.): Those interpreting this news as an indication of TBD.com's demise may want to hold back a bit. Erik Wemple, who took the job as TBD's general manager after Brady left the organization, was quick to put a positive spin on the WJLA take over. "In terms in what you see [on the website], I don't think it will be that different," Wemple said. Wemple also indicated that the move shouldn't immediately affect staffing levels at the organization, and said that he has a good relationship with WJLA station manager Bill Lord. "I think he respects what we do," said Wemple.

"We have a good staff to play with here, and everyone is engaged on what we consider important stories," affirmed Wemple. "The way I measure ownership by is level of investment and it continues to be robust." more ›

WJLA Airs Self-Breast Exams Without Blurring

The idea here is obviously that demonstrating how to do self-breast exams in a clear and precise manner could help save lives. But of course, it's also the start of the fall sweeps period, so the station is catching some heat for the appearance of showing naked boobs just to get ratings. more ›

No Remains Actually Found at Forest Haven

Yesterday's big WJLA scoop turned out to be no scoop at all. An early report that police had found what might have been human remains within the abandoned Forest Haven facility in Laurel turned out to be not true, according to the Gazette. "OPM and District police officials arrived at the closed Forest Haven facility for the mentally retarded Tuesday night and searched several "grave-like mounds" found there," but found nothing. The search was prompted after local TV news station WJLA forwarded an image provided by a tipster of the mounds. more ›
