Morning Roundup: Break Out Your Shovels Edition

How about that first snow storm of the season, Washington? CapitalWeather.com says that "yesterday's clipper system actually significantly 'over-performed,'" which is why we ended up with 2-4" of snow for the region instead of the 1" we were originally expecting. The Examiner was concerned about your commute this morning thanks to overnight lows that were forecast to drop into the low 20s, allowing for ice to refreeze on the roads in time for this... more ›

Morning Roundup: Vying in Va., Malevolence in Md.

Good morning, Washington. Does your commute include the Wilson Bridge? If so, enjoy this morning's trip — it's the last speedy one you're likely to have this week. As Fox 5 details, some of the traffic around the bridge will be redirected beginning at 10 a.m. this morning. But the worst will be saved for overnight on Friday, when traffic will be reduced to a single lane. Hateful Vandalism Galore: What the hell is going... more ›

Living in D.C.: Only Getting More Crazy Expensive

An Examiner story this morning is designed to fill you with dread for the coming D.C. Pricepocalypse. According to a study released Wednesday by George Mason University professor Stephen Fuller, the average price of a home in the national capital region likely will swell almost 3,000 percent in 50 years. The study predicts the average home in the metro area will be $14 million in 2057, compared to today’s average of $477,000. As if your nightmares about never being able to afford to buy a home in D.C. weren't bad enough already. more ›

However you prefer measuring the start of the season, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments is predicting our first Code Orange air quality day today, meaning ozone levels are predicted to be extremely high and the air quality very poor. The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission... more ›

Quick, informal poll: Raise your hand if your drive, slug, or Metro to work each day. Now keep your hand raised if you hate your commute. One more -- keep your hand up if you have a bike. Morning Roundup: Icy Valentine's Edition

Happy Valentine's Day, Washington. It's icy out! And, as Encino Man taught us, where there's ice, puzzlement and disorientation won't be far behind. We know you've got questions: will your power stay on on? Will you have to go into work? How horrible is your commute going to be? We'll get to that in a second. But first, we must remind you of the traditional Washington area winter storm news edict: THERE SHALL BE NO... more ›

So Close to Over

So Close to Over

We've got not one, but two press conferences in the next hour and a half, signaling the end of the 2006 Senate races. At 3 p.m., Sen. George Allen will hold a press conference at the Carlyle House in Alexandria to concede the election to Jim Webb. At least, that's the speculation and expectation of Democrats everywhere who are breathing sighs of relief. Though it's likely Allen is playing nice in order to resurrect his... more ›

Morning Roundup: Let it Rain Edition

Morning Roundup: Let it Rain Edition

Happy Wednesday, Washington. We don't know about you guys, but we feel strongly that last night was excessively hot. Especially if you were stupid enough to wear jeans while sitting outdoors drinking beer — as muggy as it was, just peeling those suckers off and managing to climb into bed with a fan pointed straight at your head was a minor miracle. So it is with great fanfare that DCist announces, starting today, three days... more ›

What Metro Needs: A Good PA

What Metro Needs: A Good PA

Today we're kicking off a new transit feature on DCist -- What Metro Needs. Over the next few weeks -- and months, should the content merit it -- we'll be going through the many things, big and small, that we believe Metro could use to provide better service to the increasing number of people that rely on it to get to and from work and home. Some of these will be opinions based on particular commuting experiences, some based on our knowledge of best practices on other comparable transit systems. And in this we will need your input. If you know of something you wish Metro had to make your commute an easier one, please let us know. more ›

Morning Roundup: Believing It When We See It Edition

Good morning, Washington. We hope your commute your commute to work yesterday was better than ours. We ran into snarled traffic in two different locations thanks to newspaper machines that had been blown into the street. Chalk another one up for the new media: we may not have sources, offices or salaries, but we're indisputably less susceptible to wind. Today looks to be about as cold and blustery as Thursday was — WAMU says... more ›

Morning Roundup: Crowded Metro Edition

Morning Roundup: Crowded Metro Edition

Feeling a little squeezed in on Metro these days? It's not just your imagination -- there really are more people riding the rails these days, according to the Examiner. High gas prices have pushed more and more people onto Metro, further crowding a transit agency already experiencing record high ridership. While eight-car trains have been tested on various lines in recent weeks and used during busy weekends, the crowd-thinning longer trains won't be in full... more ›

Morning Roundup: Record Power for D.C. Edition

Good Morning, Washington. Pat Padua uploaded this photo to DCist photos after taking a photo walk on Georgia Avenue. Although there's no active WMATA service alerts, the AP reported earlier this morning that the Orange Line will experience delays this morning, with 15 minutes between trains. How was your commute? Today highs will be in the mid 80s, which will hopefully make tonight's third Screen on the Green film ("Suspicion") tolerable to watch. Pepco... more ›

News Flash! Traffic in the Region Is Bad

News Flash! Traffic in the Region Is Bad

In another installment in what could become known as the "Science Proves the Obvious" category of DCist posts, a study released today finds that Washington metropolitan area suffers from the third-worst traffic woes in the nation -- behind only San Francisco and Los Angeles. The study, known as the Urban Mobility Study and conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute, found that Washingtonians spent, on average, 69 hours a year stuck in traffic (collectively adding up... more ›

Morning Roundup: Sans Umbrella Edition

Yeah, it's raining (this DCist left his umbrella at the office, super!) and there are weather-related problems all over the region, including flooding. And look at the traffic from this D.C. traffic cam looking at the Suitland Parkway approach to the Frederick Douglass Bridge in Southeast. And it's going to be in the 20s tomorrow morning. Summer was bound to end sometime. And there are 15-minute delays on the Yellow and Green lines in both directions. more ›

So Red Liners, how was your commute this morning? Due to construction this weekend at the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet University station, there are speed restrictions between Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue. WMATA says there are 6 minute delays. It took DCist 20 minutes to get across downtown this morning, 10 minutes of that time was spent stuck between Judiciary Square and Union Station. Hopefully the delays will clear up by lunchtime. more ›

Orange Line Crunch Worsens, New Map Could Come

Orange Line Crunch Worsens, New Map Could Come

We all know the Orange Line is crowded. We all hear the many complaints from Virginia commuters about inching beneath the Potomac River between Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom. The Post explains why the Orange Line is getting more crowded and can't handle more trains. And it will get worse, regardless if and when a metrorail spur is built from West Falls Church to Tyson's Corner (and eventually to Dulles International Airport.) The problem is simple.... more ›

New Bus Routings Through Capitol Checkpoints

New Bus Routings Through Capitol Checkpoints

Some residents on Capitol Hill are breathing a sign of relief now that the Route 96 and 97 metrobuses have been steered away from a temporary terror-related detour to a new fixed routing. The old 96 and 97 routings on First Street NE between the Russell and Dirksen Senate office buildings ended this summer when Washington's terror alert level was elevated to Orange. First Street was closed to traffic and metrobuses used Third and Fourth streets to navigate around security checkpoints, irking neighbors not accustomed to having multi-ton noisy buses cutting down their street. more ›

Sluggish Commute Everywhere

Everyone back to work! Just in time for the post-Labor Day return to work, WMATA is reporting delays on the Red Line. WTOP reported this morning that the 15-minute delays are between Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue, which is getting DCist thinking that they're related to this past weekend's trackwork at the NewYoFla station construction site. more ›
