Ibekwe, Strawberry Enter Draft

Maryland juniors Ekenna Ibekwe and D.J. Strawberry are reportedly entering the NBA Draft. This isn’t cause for alarm for Terps fans, though. Neither player is expected to hire an agent, meaning they’ll retain their eligibility to return to college. The pair are merely seeing where their draft stock lies and taking the opportunity to compete for NBA scouts in pre-draft camps. Barring incredible performances in those workouts, they’ll both be back in Terps uniforms…

Terps Rally For Title

Maryland entered this weekend the clear underdog against three opponents with Final Four pedigrees. They left with the trophy, proving that “experience isn’t everything.” Freshman point guard Kristi Toliver scored the team’s final five points in regulation — including a rainbow three-pointer from the right corner over 6-7 Alison Bales that tied the game with six seconds to play — then made the go-ahead free throws in overtime in the Terps’ 78-75 win in last…

Why Not Mason?

So, in case you hadn’t heard, George Mason is in the Final Four. As an 11-seed and member of the Colonial Athletic Assocation, the Patriots are the natural underdogs heading into Indianapolis. But in a tournament full of upsets, with four unlikely combatants — Mason, UCLA, LSU, and Florida — left standing, it’s absurd to heavily favor one team or heavily discount the chances of another. This Final Four is the toughest to handicap in…

NCAA Hoops: Who’s Elite, Who’s Headed Home?

George Mason continued its Cinderella run through the NCAA tournament last night, earning a berth in the quarterfinals with a 63-55 win over Wichita State at Verizon Center. George Mason came out hot, jumping to a 9-0 lead. They rode superb three-point shooting from Folarin Campbell, Tony Skinn, and Lamar Butler to 36 points in the first half, while putting together a stout defensive effort that held the Shockers to just 19 points on…

Mason upsets Michigan St.; Hoyas Advance

When George Mason’s name was called on Selection Sunday, it turned more than a few heads (including DCist’s). They were included over major conference clubs like Cincinnati and Florida St., and conference foe Hofstra, who had just beaten the Patriots in the CAA semis. They would also be playing without Tony Skinn, their second-leading scorer, who was suspended one game for punching a Hofstra player. Friday night in Dayton, Ohio, they proved they belonged, coming…

Colonials Escape in First Round

Owing in large part to a soft schedule, George Washington had earned a reputation as overrated despite a 26-2 record. With just 11 minutes remaining in their first-round NCAA Tournament game against UNC-Wilmington last night, the Colonials appeared posed to prove their critics right. They trailed by 18 points, and had allowed the Seahawks to make 14 of their last 16 shots. The game, which had been tied at halftime, seemed to be slipping away….

Local Teams Prepare for Big Dance

For George Mason, Selection Sunday was a relief. For George Washington, it was the worst-case scenario. The Patriots — a bubble team thanks to two recent losses to Hofstra — didn’t have to sweat too long on Selection Sunday, as they were named the 11 seed in the second bracket announced. This was much to the dismay of CBS basketball announcer Billy Packer. The Patriots’ regional will be played in Washington, but GMU has plenty…

College Hoops: Conference Tournaments, Day 2

Though ranked sixth in the country, George Washington has been characterized as an overrated team. Given the opportunity to prove that their 26-1 record and 18 game winning streak wasn’t just a house of cards, the Colonials instead folded, losing 68-53 to Temple in the first-round of the Atlantic Ten tournament. The loss is not only disappointing and gives fuel to the team’s critics, but it likely cost them a couple of seeds in…

College Hoops: Conference Tournaments, Day 1

Prior to yesterday afternoon, the last time the Georgetown Hoyas took the court they put on an embarrassing performance, losing to South Florida and costing themselves a first-round bye in the Big East conference tournament in the process. In the first half of Wednesday’s game against Notre Dame, they extended their streak of mediocre-to-bad play to 60 minutes, missing their first 12 shots and trailing at the break before rallying for a 67-63 win….

College Hoops Roundup: GW, UMd, Howard win

It’s a familiar script for the George Washington mens’ basketball team. Let an inferior team hang around — maybe even lead — until midway through the second half, then go on a devastating run. In the case of last night’s 89-78 win at St. Bonaventure, the Colonials trailed by four with under eight minutes left before reeling off 13 straight points to take control. Three Colonials finished in double figures in both points and…
