WaPo Bids Farewell to Cathy, Mary and Hilda
Starting today, the funnies page in the Washington Post will be looking a little different: Mary Worth, Cathy and Broom Hilda have been given the boot to make room for Agnes, Brewster Rockit: Space Guy! and Brevity. Who could have foreseen that America’s appetite for comics about stupid, nosy and/or shrew-like women would ever subside? We guess that Cathy’s audience eventually found reading the strip to be a little too self-deprecating. There’ll be a…

The Little Prince Lights Up The Stage
With poignant lines such as “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye,” who couldn’t love The Little Prince? A French classic by Antoine de Saint Exupery, it has been translated into more than 160 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, and I was excited to hear that the Washington Ballet was bringing their adaptation to the stage. With choreography…

Our Kingdom for a Cleared Sidewalk
While the rest of the country is preoccupied with Britney’s new ‘do, we’re … well, we’re a little mystified by that, too, but more practically, we’d also like to know what’s up with the lack of cleared sidewalks here in the District. Though we reminded folks last week after our first big snow this winter that it was important for law-abiding citizens to keep those walkways in front of their abodes as ice and snow-free…

¡Noche Latina! Mixes it Up
The tango is a colorful, fiery display of passion and movement, with ballet being its more classical, astute and refined cousin. Now, imagine the two together, and toss some mariachi music into the mix. The Washington Ballet’s ¡Noche Latina! does just that, combining the classical, floating movements of ballet with the energy and boldness of tango. Not just a dance show, the night includes live music, including Mariachi Los Amigos, who come in through…

Crime in Northeast Goes Little Mentioned
Last night, Northeast D.C. saw a robbery, a high-speed chase, gun shots directed at police, an injured cyclist, and a barricade situation, all rolled into one. Police cars, flashing lights and emergency vehicles woke up many residents late last night around a normally quiet stretch of Capitol Hill. NBC 4 notes that investigators have said the incident “started around 9:30 p.m. after three suspects robbed a man at gunpoint at 41st and Benning Road Northeast…

Stomp Moves and Grooves
Orange construction barrels become drums. Strong dancers spin across the stage as others walk out thumping sinks chained around their necks. It’s performance art taken to another level. Watching Stomp is a bit like seeing the secret life of ordinary things: Here’s what your broom can do when it isn’t sweeping, here’s the sound a rubber hose can make when it’s tapped against something. It blends percussive rhythms and movement to create a high-energy, colorful…

We’ve all been there, walked through it, grabbed some lunch in the basement food court, but rpongsaj has a fun, twisty photo interpretation of the Union Station we known oh-so well. Taken sideways from a balcony, I presume. EXIF data, of course….

Facial expressions are all the rage in Bsivad’s photo of a man speaking to Mayor Fenty. On the Flickr comment stream, it’s mentioned that the photo would be a good candidate for a comments contest. What do you think are the words being exchanged with such animation?…

As we ring in the new year POTD-style, thanks to all those who put up great photos in the DCist Flickr pool of their holiday time in the city. MatthewBradley had some great shots up, especially some shots of the motorcade passing by with President Ford’s remains. One that caught my eye was this black and white shot of Penn Ave. up towards the Capitol dome. Alas, the dome is covered by fog, which…
