A local angler fishing in the Potomac near the Mount Vernon Yacht Club reeled in the mother of nonnative fish species, the Northern Snakehead. In fact, it is the 17th snakehead to be caught in the Potomac.

Scientists fear the fish, a native of Africa and Asia, could disturb the river’s ecosystem with its “voracious appetite.” The fish can also “move short distances on land using its fins and live out of water for up to three days.”

This comes nearly a week after a fishing competition meant to snag as many snakeheads as possible failed to capture any of the toothy beasts.
