The D.C. Political Comedy Festival, jointly sponsored by the American Film Institute and American University’s School of Communications kicks off tonight with a sneak preview of John Sayles’s new film Silver City (IMDB) to be followed with a discussion with the director. Both the AFI and American U. have posted schedules of events for the festival, which also includes screenings of Primary Colors (Fri.), Election (Sat.), Wag the Dog (Sun.).
All the screenings will be followed with discussions – Joe Klein will be dropping by after Primary Colors, and director Barry Levinson will be on hand after the screening of his film Wag the Dog. The festival also includes a performance with comic Dick Gregory and other local comedians on Saturday. Remember though, the goal is to “discuss the role political humor plays in shaping politics and political perceptions.”
The films and discussions are $8.50 for adults and $7.50 for students and seniors, available either online or at the AFI Silver Theatre box office in Silver Spring. We suspect Silver City is sold out – the AFI website doesn’t list any times available.
